Tn Aatorlan guarantees to lis adver Uaera tha largest citxulatton of any news paper published on tha Columbia river. Advertising rales can ba had on apphca Uon ta the business manager. Tha Weekly Aatorlan. tha second oldest weekly in tha atata of Oregon, haa, neat to tha Torlland Orcgonlan, the largoat weekly circulation In tha state. By common consent of all parties the teat of republicanism thla year will be belief In and advocacy of the gold stand ard. How. then, can there be but one re publican party In Oregon? And If thla Is tha teat and there la only one republican party, ta there anything Inharmonious In aaylng the republican rtarty of Oregon can be moat appropriately and aafely led by men who have always advocated and voted for the gold standard The war clouda are certainly gathering, and the situation grow more ominous day by day. The government at Wash ington docs not say war la inevitable, but H la making every preparation po-thle. Every ammunition factory in the country la working night and day on government orders. Siipplit-s of war material are be ing ruthed to every naval depot. Every fortification on our coasts I the scene of unremitting work in building emplace ments, mounting guns, and putting it in condition to withstand attack. Trade continues to move along In the same regular and even course that It hit a followed for several weeks past. The ex citement over the International political aituation has produced scarcely a ripple In legitimate business circles. The com mercial agenciea all report continued ac tivity In nearly. all lines of distributive trade, and thia Is particularly noticeable tn the larger cities of the west, south and the northwest. No industry or branch of .business shows any restriction or hind rance, while some have been rapidly gaining for the last month. No leas an authority than Secretary Cage predicted two weeks ago that If the board of Inquiry found that the Maine was blown up from external cause, war would be declared at the same session of congress at which the report was read. The San Francisco Examiner also stated in last Monday's edition that war with Spain would be declared at tomorrow's session of congress. It therefore follows that unless Mr. Gage, who Is in the presi dent's confidence, and the Examiner, which professes to 1 in possession of the facts covered by tne Maine report. ar both mistaken, the next issue of the As torlan will contain a declaration of war. The Mitchell party knows It has no hjs sible Kliow- to control the regular prima ries In Multnomah county, and the ob ject In issuing a call for another primary election is to seeure the sending of a dual delegation to the state convention, thus hiving the ground for a resolution to exclude both delegations, and depriving Multnomah county of any representation In the convention. The theory Is that this would be a taking idea with the country dclegales. as a good way to punish the factional spirit existing In that county It la a dirty trick which deserves to b sat down on by the convention, and ' believe It will be If it is thoroughly pub lished and understood In advance of the convention.
