Hat unlay at the mouth of the river there was probably the roughest water ever known at this harbor In many year, and yet there was not a swell Inside. The tug yesterday took orders outside for the Cape Thomaa. from lllo; the Harvard, from Santa Iloaalla; the Fern glrn and the Klnkora, to proceed to the Hound for loading Instead of entering this port. The tug Relief Sunday picked up the anchor and chain droped by the Val ium! off the O. rt. and N. dock when she purled her cable early Sunday morning. The Yallaml re-anchored In the lower harbor, near Fort Steven. and her anchor and chain were restored by the Relief In the afternoon. For nearly three year the burned out hull of the British ship Homes- Held ha battled with the storms of the South Pacfflc ocean. The I ant time the derelict was seen It looked as If she would keep above the waves for many years to come. Captain Ogden. of the whaling bark Alice Know lee, while he waa cruising In the Pacific near the equator on a hunt for sperm whales. sighted the derelict .He report that It was little changed In appearance since It waa reported by a vessel that had sailed close to the barnacle-covered hull nearly two year previously. Early n January, 1KD3, the vessel was aban- limed by her crew !n latitude 20 north and longitude 110 west. Her cargo of conl had taken fire, and when the sail ors left the vessel her hold was a fur nace. When the Alice Knowles sighted he derelict she was In Intltude 1 north and longitude 175 east, In a part of the I'aclllc ocean little freqnented by ves sels. The derelict wait flouting on al most an even keel, with the stumps of her mluen and foremasts standing, hut her hull, as far as could be seen Ih'Iow the water line, was covered with marine growth. The bottom of the ves sel was covered for nearly a foot thick with a matted growth of sea weed and barnncle. Sun Francisco Kxumlner. The auctioning off of the ship of the Id Sturbuck line has practically ruled he old S'tarbuck blue, white and blue hotiHo ting o(T the American ship. The Starbuck vessels were auctioned off last week In New York, and when the ves sels of that line put Into port again it will be under some other colors than he old flag. The Tlllle E. Starbuck and T.F. Oakes were sold to E. Luckenback, of New York. In the case of the Starbuck, the new owner will not change masters, and continue In command, his record with the Captain Eben Curtis, of Port land, Oregon, will ship for the past ten years being an enviable one. The Star buck la now under charter to load gen eral merchandise at New York for Syd ney. The T. F. Oakes Is now en route from Hongkong to New York, and It will not be known until arrival whether Captain Heed will continue In command or not.
