Is touted at the terminus of the Astoria and Colombia River Railroad, at the month of the Columbia River. It fronts on the deep water of the Columbia River Harbor, and Uing perfectly protected from wind and seas, affords the very test docks for ships on this bay: therefore, it Is the exact spot for the seaport of the reat Northwest. These facts were reco jnfced by the Astoria & Columbia River Railroad Co. when New Astoria Was Selected as the Starting Point for their Railroad and the Location for the Terminals. New Astoria Is platted upon a plane high enough for perfect drainage, and well protected by a high ridge behind it. Its streets and avennes are wide, and. in fact. It is laid out on modern plans. Seaborg. who was over from Ilwaco yesterday, stated that the catches of salmon in the bay were averaging very well. He was confi dent that as soon as the river fell an other foot or two, the run of fish would Increase. Judge Nelson of the police court yes terday while showing a gentleman where the gas Jets were which might be used In case of emergency, had oc casion to remark that when the city attorney was present In the courtroom they did not need any gas. Captain Frank Russell Patey, of the British bark Patey, well known In As toria, was married on the 2nd Instant In Ireland to Miss J. M. Wilson. In 1894 the captain's first wife died at sea on the passage around the Horn, and was burled off the Horn. Doubtless Portland people will wel come the change In the weather, which Is growing considerably cooler through out the Interior. Astoria weather was cloudy all day yesterday, but those who are unaccustomed to warm weather, were glad of the change. Capt. Rani, .of the Antlope. whose vessel Is chirtred to load on the lth of September at Portland, Is taking things easy and enjoying life In As toria, where the weather Is cool and pleasant. The captain says he Is In no hurry to go to a hotter climate. The number 13 has long been consid ered an unlucky figure. Many people will not sit at table when thirteen are present. Other foolish fancies are con nected with this number. In 1898 there Is a larger number which is likely to to prove a real hoodoo, and that Is 1621. Capt Babbldge, of the Mller, report ed yesterday afternoon that a man on Bear creek named J. T. Gilbert's pavilion and grounds at Seaside may be had for use free by persons or societies that wish to give ex cursions to the beach. Both pavilion and grounds are In excellent condition, and those who wish to give picnics would greatly add to the attractions by accepting Mr. Gilbert's liberal offer. 'These are the days In which the small boy delights to take a swim In Toung's bay. Almost every after noon groups of them may be seen climbing the hill on their way to the swimming places. It Is to be hoped that no victims of treacherous holes In Young's River will be found this season. In Justice Abercromble's court yes terday John Castro, who was accused of the murder of Chris. VeJIns, was bound over to await the action of the grand Jury, his bail being fixed at 1250. The case seems to be a peculiar one, with little evidence so far pro duced that would convict Castro. What will develop before the grand Jury in the fall cannot, of cource be foretold. The work of tearing down the re mainder of the old warehouses on the Ross-Higgins docks has begun. After the debris is moved away the Lurllne and a number of the smaller boats will land at the new dock, A great change has taken place In the past week or ten days along the wa HERE ARE BARGAINS ter front, and soon the railway trvstl. will be completed as fur as the O. 11. and N, wharf. A dearth of news along the water front has quite discouraged shipping men, A large number of vessels are overdue. Including th two steel rail ships, but no uneasiness I. yet felt by anyone as to thee ships, because at this particular season they are apt to get becalmed In the Pacific. Th boys, however, would like lo see three or four of them come In at once and give them something to do. The steamer Mexico will take the place of the steamer Stale on the next trip from San Francisco, while the latter Is undergoing needed repair. The change will be only for the one trip. Miss A. Duren. who with Mr. F. P. Kendall left a few days ago on a pleasure trip to the Cascades and The Dalles, will Join the steamer Col umbia In Portland ami sail for her home In San Francisco this morning. Early yesterday morning John Sea man, foreman of the pile driver at work In front of the Flavel dock, while pushing a piece of timber Into place, lost his balance and fell over board, striking his shoulder on a large plank In the water. The collar bone was broken and the unfortunate work man was taken to St. Mary's Hospital. This is the third or fourth accident of a similar nature which has happened to this pile driver. Possibly Captain Jacobsen's crew consists of thirteen members. D. S. Smalley, of Alameda county. California, baa been visiting his cousin. I. L. Osgood In this city during the past few days, accompanied by Mr. Roan, of Sacramento, lloth of these gentlemen were agreeably surprised In this city and stated that In their opin ion Its future proiects were the very best They visited the fine timber lands In the surrounding country, and both gentlemen, who are possessed of means, expressed a desire to Invest. In Clatsop county. They will not only Invest but say that upon their return they will sjeak a good word for As toria and Clatsop county. Much to their regret, on account of business engagements, they were obliged to re turn to San Francisco on this morn ing's steamer, but promised to pay a longer visit In the future to one of the liveliest towns they have seen this year. A few hundred dollars more and this committee will have complet ed Its work. The press committee re ported having arranged for the attend ance during the carnival and firemen's tournament of the Oregon State Press Association. The committee on war ships reported that It would now prob ably be Impossible to secure a United States war vessel, or perhaps any other. The committee on program had not yet completed all details but the outline of the program published some time since will be substantially the one adopted. Messrs. George & Barker notified the committee that they would donate a bale of Flnlayson's twine to be offered as a prize by the regatta committee. This donation Is made without any conditions or restrictions whatever, and the committee Is left to be the sole Judges as to how it shall be awarded. Doubtless other agents of net twine will follow the good exam- A warded Highest Honors World' Fair, Gold Medal, Midwinter Fair. DR' CREAM Most Perfect Made. 40 Yean the Standard.
