SMOKE STILL WITH US, Days Getting "Warmer and the Nlghl Cooler. The weather and crop bulletin (for west ern Oregon received yesterday by the Asturi'an says: Wcaithar Smoke has prevailed to such an extent during the past -week as to prevent the sun from Bhlnlng; the. sun has had the appearance of a red ball of fire; the amoke )b produced by the extensive forest fires In the Coast land Cascade ranges of mountains. The- temperature has been loner than during the preceding week, tho, maximum ranging from 70 to 90 degrees, the minimum (from 46 to 66 degrees,' exc;pt In a few scattered local ities and upon the higher agricultural land, where, on Tuesday morning last, it fell to 35 degrees; this tot tier tempera ture allllowed frost to form In sections of Washington, C-ackamas, Benton and Lincoln counties. No rain has fallen during the week; tihe mornings have been foggy. As many correspondents note. the days have been .warm and ihe nigh cool. , Crops Harvesting is almost over; swne late grain is yet to be cut, but the major portion of all -gzain Is now cut and threshing is now in progress. Much of the thres'.ilng Is finished also and the yields have been about an average In cases the yield has not ben what is was expected, but, itaken as a whole, the yield is fully an average, both as to quantity and qual ity. , The frost on the morning of the 13th slightly Injured squash, bean and pota vines in the few localities affected. The potato crop, though a much larger acreage than usual, will not yield p acre the nominal amount; this decreased yield is due to the absence of rainfall, Since June 1 there has been rainfall on June 14, 15, 30, July 4 and G, amounting to about tihree-quarters of an inch; which total is tiwo inches below the average, The summer months are dry, under nor mal conditions, hence the excessive dry ness when only 27 per centum of the normal amount of rain falls. The wild rasp and blackberries are very plentiful Jn the coast counties. A corre spondent from Curry county reports that good pickers can pick from six to eight gallons a day. Same months ago It was pointed out In these bulletins that by utuzing the ripen.ng of strawberries in the various sections of Oregon the Bea- son for them would be greatly extended, and so with the rJsp and blackberries they ripen in the interior In July, and now the latter part of August they are in the height of their season in the coast counties. Tho onion crop of Washington county Is attected by Lee, which may materially reduce the yletd. The grapes are A full average crop, and are reported to be In a most flourishing condition. T.ie fruit ouitCook is good; iprunes are now rlp;ni-r,g; peaches are In the height or their season and are generally an ex cellent crop; large shipments are being made. Tne pear and apple crops are re ported to be excellent. There appear to oe fewer Inaecta this year' than usun whioh fact is evidently due to the greater care g.ven orchards. Tire o ondOtlons of the olipsre.malns prac tically unchanged from last week's re port. The tours are growing, but owing io me ury weatiner tihe ends of the long arms are drying up. The lice have not oeeome more numerous, and) damaee irom tinem is not expected to occur to any great extent. Hop picking will best anouit Beptemraer l. The weather conditions todav are imnre ravoraiwe for rain 'than -they have been for weeks, yet rain will probably not occur .for 10 days yet. Until rain falls the smoky atmosphere win continue to prevail. Agent L. T. Erwin has caused a com motion, amorg the local B. P. O. E.
