THE DAILY A8T0RIAN, ASTOKIA, THURSDAY 11011X1X0, JANUARY 24, 1825. GOOD-BTB TO THE SAN PEDRO. She Is Now Splitting' 'Amidships and 'Must Soon Go Under the Waves, A good, stiff gale, says the Colonist, Is said to 'be all that Is required now to totally destroy the wreck of the San Pedro. Stronger than any en gineer's prediction as to how long the vessel would hang together In a shapely condition on Brotchle ledge, was the evidence produced yesterday by a big break amidships. From almost every point on the Dallas road, from the outer wharf to Macauley road, this break was noticeable. It has naturally been looked for, however, and the won. der Is that the ship has stood all that she has. For four years, ever since the Pedro grounded on the rocks late In 1S31, the stern end or half of the vessel has been depending for support on the forward part, notwithstanding strong currents and tides, buffeting seas and all the efforts of engineers to re move it. When the last bolt holding the San Pedro together gives there will be little of the craft left above the sur face, ami what is left will, It Is thought, soon disappear, for the great weight whlrh at present holds It stationary will be gone. Then It will require but a good sea and strong tide to carry It off the rock Into the deep water sur rounding. A good deal of the ship's machinery has been removed, but In the hold Is nearly, If not all, her driv ing gear. This, of course, will sink with the rest, and with it will disap pear a great portion pt the hope en tertained by some for its recovery. Since Captain Lachlan and his son went East early last fall, the ship has not been visited by anyone save a few curious spectatlors, and the watch man Who makes his trip twice to and twice from the ship dally, once in the morning to remove the signal light and once In . the evening to place It again on the ship. This watchman Is an Austrian who owns a number of cabins on Discovery street, whose in terests In the wreck are, however, only centered in the work he performs In Captain Laotian's absence; Mr. James Dunsmulr representing the owners, the Southern Pacific railroad company. He had not up till late yesterday been In formed of the ship's critical condition, and consequently there is nothing known as yet as to what steps will be taken in regard to salving the few removable portions of the ship. FOR DROUGHT SUFFERERS. National Alliance Asks Subordinate Bodies to Collect Contributions. Through James E. Wilson and C. E Lawrence, a special committee, the National Farmers' Alliance has Issued an appeal for aid for the Nebraska and South Dakota drought sufferers The matter was brought up In the an nual meeting of the alliance in this city last Tuesday, through a communl cation from the executive committee of the Nebraska Farmers' Alliance, This letter repeated the information that has been widely published to the effect that the people of Western Ne braska Where the drought has prevail ed for the past two years, were In a deplorable condition; that they wert destitute of orn, wheat, barley, pota toes, vegetables and hay; that they not only had no means, but their cred it was exhausted. The letter was slim ed by the state secretary, Mrs. J. T Kellle, and by J. M. DImIck, F. G Wilke, and Thomas A. Donahue, and stated that the alliance board would agree to receive and distribute accord ing to need what should be sent In re sponse to the appeal. In support of this statement,, differ ent delegates present had seen many letters coming directly from the suffer ers, and both the outgoing and Incom ing governor of Nebraska have slnct the letter was written directed public attention to the actual suffering and the absolute need of outside aid. In view of the imperative need ol prompt and systematic action the na tional alliance appointed Messrs. Wil son and Lawrence a committee to draw up an appeal to the farmers of the w'hole country, and especially to sug gest that farmers' alliances and othei farmers' organizations take steps to meet the urgent needs, so that what ia done may be done wisely and sys tematically. These gentlemen make the following appeal: We suggest that a thorough and sys tematic effort be made by local allt ances and other local farmers' organ . izatlons to collect needed supplies and money, and that correspondence be opened at once to obtain the names and places and committees for distribution, with the state secretary, Mrs. J. T Kellle, at Hartwell, Neb.; or with W. F. Dale, president, at Atlanta, Neb.; or Prof. W. A. Jones, vice-president, at Hastings, Neb.; or Jdhn H. Powers, state lecturer, at Cornell, Neb. In or der to reach the sufferers of South Da kota, we recommend correspondence with Ira B. Dye, Sioux Falls, S. D.; C. M. Peck, -Mitchell, S. D.; Manllus Begus, Vermillion, S. D.; or A. G. Hunt, Aberdeen, S. D., who are well accred ited agents for the regions respectively where they are located. It Is our con viction that there has never come to our notice an Instance of widespread and terrible suffering more worthy of sympathy and immediate action than the one here presented. It cannot be denied that influence of climate upon health is great, and it is In recognition of this fact that physi cians send patients suffering with pul monary diseases to great distances for "change of air." But when the sufferer happens to be too poor to act upon the advice his lot is hard indeed. But it is not necessarily hopeless.
