Duffy, aa business manager. Astoria, Or., Oct. 6, 1894. SAM'L ELMORE, Proprietor. TUB NEXT CONGRESS. The Republican congressional com mlDtee baa published a corrected list of the representatives elected to the Fifty-fourth congress. It shows that 24S Republicans, 105 Democrats, and 6 Populists were returned and will re ceive certificates of election, so tint the Republicans will have more than two. thirds majority over the combined op position. On the lint Is also noted the 'irl-h In whl. h notice of contest haa been served or will be served upon the candidates returned elected. An lnspec. tlon of the list shows (Wat of the Re publican representatives-elect, 00 members of the present congress, while 27 will succeed Republicans, 116 will succeed Democrats, and 6 will succeed Populists. Of the Democrats returned, 7G the members of the Fifty-third Con gress, 29 will succeed Democrats, and 1 Will succeed a Republican. The Pop- ullnts gain one In Alabama, and 2 In North Carolina. The only Republican candidate who was defeated for re election was Mr. Murray, the colored member from South Carolina, and he will contest the seat of Elliot, tha Dem ocrat, on the grounds of fraud. An Inspection of the list shows that the chairmen of only 20 of the 66 com mittees of the present house of reire- sentatlvea will tie members of the next house, 21 having been defeated at the polls, while 15 were not candidates for re-election. Thla alone Indicates that the minority In the next house will be weak In point of ability as well as nu merically. No a Democrat who Is a nvember of the present congress was returned from New England, only one, (Mr Bartlctt) from New York, one from Pennsylvania (Mr. Erdmwn), and none from New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, or West Virginia. Ohio returned only two, one of whom was elected to fill a vacancy in the present congress, and Illinois only one Mr. McCann, of Chi cago who haa never cut much of a figure in the house. The atates of Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Mlnneso'a, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and Wlsconnln, will be entire ly destitute of Democratic representa tion, while California will have only on Democratic representative, and the i combined pluralities of the two Demo- crots returned from Illinois will not exoeed 600, although the Democratic gerrymander was designed to give the Democtrata fifteen of the twenty-two congressmen. The speech recently made by Mr. M. W, Howard, the Populist congre?sman- olecit from Alubnmn, and the first can didate in twenty yeam to bernt the or ranlred Democracy of that aRate, is nlgninuartt of the cluuige of sentiment mong the people in eoma sections of the South. In commenting on the oauiiea thut contributed to his election, he wld: "So Umik as any section of this country remtans solid on sectional lines or sectional feeling, just so long Is It a menace to the country as a whole. No longer In the South shall vote A that which 4s mouldering. The issues r now the Issues of busi ness." Further along in his speech he showed himself an ardent protectionist, by asking. "What good Is It for suit of clothes to be cheap If a man has not a penny to buy it with? Men ere vntlng now for themselves, for their TlVCS r.-l f"r thlr children, not for politicians and rlngMrra. When a man 13 selling his cotton for 5 Cents A pound and his wheat for 50 cent a bushel, he la not gAng to stand on sentiment very long. I'd rather have the tariff hlgtier and have money to buy things with than have no money. I'd rather see the mills running and the spindles turning than see 4,000,000 people In pov erty and misery." The German government shows a dis position to submit the case of the Im portation of American cattle to experts whlohi will probalbly result satisfac torily and again make wide the ways of the emigrating transatlantic steer. The trade In live stock f this sort with Germany has not hitherto been overwhelming large, only 17,331 having been sent thither during the five years beginning with 1890 But It is likely to morease If things go well and no occa sion arises In our tariff legislation to trump up a case against us under cover of which a reprisal may be instituted. The tax on sugar levied by the last congress affeoted one o fthe largest German exports to this country, that of Buaur, which In the three years At the At me named exceeded $100,000,000 same time our exports of meat pro- ,,, . ... .,,, ducts were $49,000,000, of which $37,000,- 000 for the single article of lard, and ; be i1 wlth n?w, and sound fir plank four Inches In thickness, and by bulld of (breadstufrB, $27,000,000. In oomparl- ng sidewalks on both sides thereof; son with these commodities, the steer TelZ So? trade Is rather light, but It Is worth said street, and to Include railings i i , ., . ... looklng after and protecting, and will very likely be re-eetabllshed again on . Us old footing. " Referrlng to Mr. Charles W. Fulton's . position as a possible senatorial candl-i date, the Oregonlan of yesterday says: For years past he (Mr. Fulton) has t-a- ni fl,r,. i t).,v,ii, teen a conspicuous figure in Republican politics. He came Into prominence as a member of the Joint committee of the westerly along center lines of Blocks legislature that laild tare to the people'1, a,nd 60- to 'he,w??t boundary of I Block numbered 60. thence southerly of the state the doings Of the Grover , . . ,i , , ,00 udmlnietretlon, and wUs then-in 1878 the youngest member of the senate. I , Bo far bacc as 1884 he was regarded as a senatorial posslbillty-durln? the leg. iBlatlve season wien Solomon HirschjCHite and extended by Cyrus Olney. was a caUUe for senator, and UfrS d&h. an adjournment ftllowed' with no! ... , , , .... choke for senator KMng made. At the last session of the legislature ho Was!tho Auditor and Police Judge for pub chosen to presldo over the senate, and later had a strong; following for the nomination of governor, In which he was defeated. Mr. Fulton appears to be making no canvass for the position of enator, but friends are not only urirlng him to be a candidate, but have tak?n notlve measures in his behalf They claim not only the representa tives from Clatsop and Columbia coun ties, but also a majority of the Eastern Oregon leglslmtlve members and others scattered over the state. The country wants a. rest, and busl- netta men can be assured that there will be no tariff legislation this session. The Rt"publkins, though they have not tho power to etvaot loglslojtion, can prevent It by dkitory tactics, and such filibus tering as Is permitted by the senate rules, and they will do so. $100 REWARD, 1100 The reader of this paper will be pleas' ed to learn that there is at least one dreaded dlHtymo that Bclence has been able to cure In all its stages, and that is Catarrh.
