Department of Agriculture, weather bureau. Mi'xlmum temperature, 55 degrees. Minimum temperature, 4(1 degrees. Precipitation, .24 Inch. Total precipitation from. July 1st, 1893 to date, 13.01 inches. Excess of precipitation from July 1st, 1S93, to dutet 4.03 Inches. A HORRIBLE CRIME. The Vancouver Register Is virtuous ly Indignant. Shs Bays (why not call u weekly "she" Instead of "It?") that: "The Oregonlan has a monopoly on the telegraphic news service of Port land, and that makes It possible for that paper to print only such news us It sees fit. The public Is required to pay monopoly pi-Ices for the news, while that paper raves a good many dc liars In typesetting and for paper by cutting down the amount of telegraph ic news sent to tt for publication. The Taconia and Seattle dally papers pub lish more complete telegraphic news than does the Oregonlan, the paper which assumes to be "the only paper." Last week In reporting tho proceedings of the democratic state convention at Lincoln, Nebraska, It was announced that Congresr.man Bryan withdrew from the democratic party when the convention voted down the resolution in favor of the free coinage of silver. The following Is a portion of the tel egraphic report which the Oregonlan fulled to print. Wo found It In the columns of tha Taooma Ledger. It suys: "Ilryan Is very popular among tho populists. He Is ono of tho most dIitingiilKhod democrats In congress. being UUnd's lieutenant. He was roared In southern, Illinois, near 'Black' Jack Lotan's birthplace His locks are taven, and as an orator he Is said to have no equals In tho country." Never was there a more Just criti cism than this. Therelentless Valky. rle who presides over the Oregonlan's tebgraph room should sink in his boots when he reads It. We ourselves have noticed this scandalous suppression of Important telegraphic news in the Or rgonlan. Last April It published a dispatch about Jones, (a populist) and In a mean and cruel goldbug manner, spitefully omitted to print ,the details that It received about tho subtle odor of the hnlr oil that permeated the platform when Jones was talking, or "the glassy sheen of the firo In his right oyo" when lie denounced the tar Iff robbers, all of which was honora bly and honestly published In the Seat tie 8kwallgmph. And again when last month Kobe it son (the populist) stood up for freedom and no soap In Weasy- vlllo. Kansas, the Oregonlan's mali ciousness was palxibly shown. Its tel egram simply made the bald statement that Robertson had spoken, while Its noble contemporary. the Taconia Dredger, gave all the facts of tha case, nut even omitting to say that he talk- Hi Miiileently, "notwithstanding the f.u t that he wu suffering with a boll under the right car, and. that his emo tions had been shattered on the even' lug before by the death of two favorite liens that had teen rut to pieces by a freight U'uln owned by a grasping railroad monopoly." Whew! Once more U the Oiegonlan caught In the clutches of Its own Infamy. "The senate U tha 'refuge of liberty,' d ies John II. Mitchell In the Evening Telegram of ysaUmluy; "the place where the minority cannot be trampled uiid.'T foot. Cloture cannot and will ;...t to ";-;".:"'J. Th H-ilver ndvo c.t My that tUl Is a shame, and th majority should rule, but if condt tions were reversed, they would cry aloud In support of the traditional rules of tha senate that protect the minority. The only way that may pos sibly settle the matter In the senate is the consideration of a compromise measure, but I cannot say anything definite regarding that, because there are so many measures or amendments to the original bill already Introduced." Any man who will deliberately father the statement that the majority Bhould not rule, and that the minority are entitled to win their case, is an arrant fool. When he makes the assertion In a country where exists the highest and most enlightened form of popular government that the world has ever known, he becomes an Idiot, unac countable for his folly. Mitchell should either keep his mouth shut or rent his tongue out by tho month to a cur iosity shop. Mr. Smalley writes from London to the "Tribune:" "Mr. Parnell made a very remark able speech In Liverpool In 1885. Mr. Gladstono was then playing his last card but one. He was appealing, and appealing vainly, to the Engllsfi peo- pla his admirers cannot be reminded of It too often -to give him a majority which would enable him to deal with Ireland independently of Irish wishes and Irish votes. If he should get such a majority, said Mr. Parnell, he would frame and pass a bill of his own. He never told the people what it would be like; any more then than In 1892. The lords would '.hrow out the bill nnd there would have to be another uppeal to the country. That, Mr. Parnell thought he was then opposing Mr.. Gladstone "would be a very abortive result of the general election, but In the circumstances the house of lords would only be carrying out their con stitutional right by rejecting a bill the details of which had not been be fore the country." Tha Evening Tolegrami printed a dispatch yesterday stating that John Jacob Astor's yacht, the "Narwhal," had collided with a ferry boat. The Oregonlan said the same thing. Both bungled. The dispatch appeared cor rectly In yesterday's Astorian. The name of the yacht Is "Nourmahal." She Is the most famous vessel of her species In the world, and was built and owned for some time by James Gordon Bennett. Her purchase by tho Astor family afforded the news papers talk for a 'month, and it is funny that the Portland papers fell Into such a silly blunder. That Is a very pertinent question In a Portland ipaper. Everybody who was at the Portland Exposition lust year will remember a handsome model of the warship Oregon, and a contri bution box, (also handsome) at the Mile of It. Now there was a good deal tit money put In this contribution box while i ho fair lasted. Where did It go to? Echo answere "Where!" SALE OF COLLATERAL. A recent New York dispatch reads: " James C. II , a line looking and apparently healthy man, was observed to stagger while walking on Fifth Avenue this afternoon, aud after taking one or two un certain steps fell to the sidewalk.
