Drunken individuals are making the nights hideous In the vicinity of the wharves. Yesterday was a welcome break In the rather monotonous program of rain and wind. The wind has blown down three big fruit trees on Adair's place at Merrl- wether Downa One of the best crews that ever left this port was shipped aboard the Pe' ter Iredale yesterday. There was not at cloud In the sky last night and It was cold and bracing enough for sleighing. . The Ctceronean Literary Society of the high school holds its regular week ly meeting this afternoon. There is a bouncing girl baby at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Z. Ferguson, and the parents are very happy. The lucky lot drawers in Hill's Lot Club last night were Fred Salz (lot 35, block 27) and Harry Christensen, (lot 33, block 27.) D. A. May's misfortunes seem to be increasing. The late rainstorm ruined a fine lot of unburnt brick at his yard on the Walluskl. There was an alarm of fire from Box No. 8 last night, but it turned out to be a false call. Damage, destruc tion of one bell rope. A very pleasant sociable will be given by the society of Christian Endeavor of the Congregational church at the residence of Mrs. Stevens tonight. The government line to the cape is still In very bad shape. It will not be up before noon today. The high winds completely destroyed the connection. - A ship was reported outside yester day afternoon. She Is believed to be the Valkyrie, a new vessel that left San Diego for this port In ballast 29 days ago. Five persons will be received Into the Congregational church next Sun day at the morning service. The rite of baptism will be administered by Rev. D. Staver. ' The steamer Signal left out for British Columbia ports at 8 o'clock yesterday morning with 1200 cases of salmon for shipment over the Cana dian Pacific railroad. Bulletins of today's race, which will probably settle the fate of the Val kyrie, will be received as usual by the Astorlan and posted in front of the office as soon as they arrive. The Sunday school choir of Grace church meets for practice' this after noon at 3:45. This evening at 7:30 Rev. W. S. Short will hold a cottage service at the residence of Mrs. Coe. There are clouds of spray continu ously around Tillamook Rock now. Clatsop Beach Is covered with great flakes of foam. There must have been a terrible surf early yesterday morn ing. The ship City of York came down the river at 3 o'clock yesterday after noon. She Is bound for Queenstown for orders with 1900 tons of wheat aboard, and will probably leave out tomorrow. A trustworthy correspondent says that nil the printed definitions of the name "Valkyrie" are wrong. He writes that the real derivation comes through the Norwegian "Mud," which translated into English means "Denis." For $2, a lot is delivered every week to the buyer In Hill's First addition.. A large number of sportsmen were out yesterday on all parts of the pe ninsula aftler ducks. The weather, however, was too mild and clear, and everybody had very bad luck, a few meadow lark being about all that were winged. Geese were scarce and though around the beaches ducks were plen tiful, they were very wary. The steamer Elmore leaves out at 6 o'clock this morning with one of the heaviest loads of freight that ever left this port for Tillamook. Among the cargo are 600 sacks of flour for Cohn & Co., 7 tons of general mer chandise, 25 tons of tin plate for Kin ney's Nehalem cannery, and 3 tons of. assorted stuff for the Nehalem Mill Co. Several passengers will make the trip. Lovers of a good cigar can always find mild, fresh Belmonts at Chas. Ol sen's Hill's First addition is located in the centre of the city. Lots are now selling in it for 12. Water colors, crayons, and sepias crayons, copying and enlarging, a spe cialty at Crow's gallery, Third street. Tha river at Portland stood 9.6 feet yesterday, a fall of three-tenths of a fcot during the past twenty-four hours. The reports received at the Southern Pacific offices in the metropolis show the stage of the Upper Willamette as follows: Corvallls, 15 fee.t 6 inches; Independence, 14 feet 6 inches; Eugene, 7 feet 2 Inches; Harrlaburg, 7 feet; Al bany, 15 feet; Salem, same as yester day; Oregon City, above the falls, 7 feet; below the falls, 14 feet 6 Inches. Scott had Invited Miss Daisy Alns worth of Oaklend, to christen the new battle-ship Oregon, while Secretary Herbert had selected Miss Dolph, daughter of Senator Dolph. The sit uation Is a little embarrassing for Sec retary Herbert and Miss Dolph. The secretary proposes that Miss Eugenia Shelby, of Portland, shall touch the button, Miss Alnesworth cut the rope, and Miss Dolph christen the ship. Miss Dolph seems Inclined to decline any Invitation In order to relieve Secretary Herbert of his embarrassment." At 2 o'clock yesterday morning the tug Escort got up steam and started to the relief of the Peter Iredale. She and the Ocklahamai worked hard for about an hour on her and finally she slid off the sand bank ,lnto deep water, The ship was then left anchored off Tongue Point till high tide, but when the tow lines were passed out at that time she again drifted onto the sand. Fifteen minutes later, however, she was clear again and was brought down to a safe anchorage. It Is impossible to tell whether the strain to which Bhe was subjected has caused any material injury, but the probability Is that it has. Parker to cover the Central Hotel with a four-ply asphalt find gravel roof, which will be the first of the character in Astoria. Mr. Sweeney, one of the contractors, has done a great deal of similar work in other coast cities, among the buildings being the Great Northern railroad shops in Spokane. These have an area of 104,670 square feet, and required 125,000 pounds of roofing pitch and 1,100 rolls "of roofing paper, of 500 square feet each, before the work was complete. The contract was the most Important one yet entered into by the company, and will serve to give an idea of the popularity of this class of roofing. The Portland City Hall, which Is to cost $500,000, will also be roofed by the Portland Asphaltum Company, as soon as the building Is ready. In the metropolis the new material is fast growing In favor, and its benefits are becoming generally recognized. It is both fire and water proof, and ev eryone in this city interested in the building line should examine the work.
