THE DAILV ASOHIAN, ASTOltlA, SUNDAY MOILN1NU, SEPTEMBER 17, lt3. ALONG THE WHARVES. The"Elmore goes out today, weather permitting, to Tillamook. She takes with her, twenty tons of cannery sup plies, In all about forty tons. On the Elmore's up trip from Tilla mook she brought with her seven tons of butter consigned to Portland, and COO cases of salmon for Elmore, San born & Co. She had nine passengers. Colonel Pat Donan, versatile and In teresting as ever, talking to a party of pentlemen the other day, said: "1 Mime west over the Union Pacific roud. People wall about hard times., Judging by the crowd"'! trains, one would fan cy everything was booming nnd the fcllded goose hung high. Ten or twelve cars In a train, and every coach Jammed. Sleepers with from two to four in every section. Dining cars ov erflowing with patrons. The time from Chicago to Omaha is fully forty miles un hour for every hour of running lime. Think of whirling from, Lake Michigan to the Pacific ocean In three dnys and a h.lf. That's as fast as I .are to fly till I get my own wings. O io skltna over the Great American Desert like a flash of greased llht rilnrr mixed with alkali dust. The cars ore is elegant In all their appolnt m nls as those of the Baltimore & Ohio or the New York Central. And do you know that one of the grandest and most exquisite stretches of scenery on any lino In the world lies along the first hundred miles of the Union Pa cific east of Portland. It Is true. With Ihe majestic Columbia river, the Ama zon of North America, on one side, and the wide and picturesque Cascade mountains on the other, It is a hun-dred-and-flfty-mllo fly through all the glories and beauties of Fairyland. In that short distance, there ere over fif ty wondrous cataracts, like Multnomah Falls, the Bridal Veil and Latourelle, ranging from two hundred and fifty to - twelve hundred feet in dizzy, leaping, foaming height. It Is magnificent be jond description or Imagination, and only needs the nrtists and the poets to make it famous as one of the world's fairest pl;ture grounds."
