Dnrirjj: the last year no less than 6,000,000 letters and packages reached, the dead letter oflice. Of this number 500,000 were never called for at the postoflico to which they -were ad dressed; 400,000 more were erroneous ly or illegibly addressed: 150,000 were j forwarded by hotel keepers because i the persons addressed had gone away; 120,000 had not snilicient postage, and J 17,000 had no addresses whatever. I Eighteen thousand contained money 335,000 in all: and 22,000 inclosed j checks tiud drafts amounting to about Sl.600,000. I Dead letters are sent in bundles . from postofiices all over the country to "Washington. Upon their arrival they are duly receipted for in books and put up in packages of 100. Then they go to a long table, where ten , clerks open them one after another. " If a letter is found to contain money a note of the amouut is made on the envelop, and the cash is put aside to be turned over "to the clerk ot the money division. All lottery tickets. deeds aud mortgages are transferred to another clerk, while checks and drafts are passed over td a third. The letters found to contain such inclos tires are filed, aul all the rest are transmitted to the returning division. There skilled experts in chirography decipher bad writing; the three young women who do the guessing exert their imaginations upon the defective addresses, and all the clews afforded by what is inside and outside the en velopes are put together in the effort to get at the facts in as many cases as possible. Such efforts, how ever, "are directed usually to discover ing the writers of the letters rather than the persons for whom they are intended. This is for the very ob vious reason that the finding of the addresses has already been proved dif ficult before the missives reached the dead letter oilice. All letters that cannot be satisfactorily disposed of are destroyed. A good deal of unde livered matter reaches the dead letter office even- year that is classed a3 of an immoral tendency sxtch as '"flash" books or pamphlets, photographs of what arc called the "fancy" sort, and so forth. All such material is laid aside at the opening table, put in bundles by the clerk in charge of the division and burned in the furnace. xlm-kleii's ij.vnic:i Salve.
