CO w gjaitjj gtomu. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY -JULY 27. 18S9. The Arkansas Hub mentions a young tinner named Frank Anderson, who has invontod a portable artesian -well. Thbee counties in Georgia will realize 125,000 for watermelons, which are bo in shipped northward by sea and by rail. For the first six months of this year 173,678 immigrants arrived in the United btates, against :y,3 for the same pe riod last year. Dobino forty-eight hours of the recent warm weather in New York city 238 deaths of children were reported to the board of health. Ballot reform along the lines of the Australian system seems to be strongly in favor in the constitutional convention in the territories. One of the notable facts of the year is that there is little, if any "speculative railroad building." Lines are being per fected and completed. Our of fifty-two Sunday school picnics held in Alabama thus far this year, forty-six of them have been rained on in the most liberal and cheerful manner. 4 We, tho people of the state of Wash ington, to preserve our rights, do oruam this constitution. That is the preamble to the "Washing ton constitution, now being formulated at Olympia, and is a model of brevity. It is said the Vanderbilts have con trol of the Chesapeake and Ohio road, they just having bought 100,000 shares from C. P. Huntington. The Vander bilts have now another trunk line to the seaboard from Chicago. The internal revenue, is the principal source of the surplus. The figures for the last three years show an increase of S7,GS4,342 in the customs receipts, while the increase from internal taxes has been $12,838,715. The investment of so much English capital in the United States suggests that possibly England is trying to buy up the country. It will be remembered that it made ineffectual efforts in 177C and in 1812 to pet control of it in some other way. It is virtually decided that there is to be a grand World's fair held in the United States in 1892; in celebration of the discovery of America, and New Yorkers are working up a boom, feeling secure that their city will bo selected as the most convenient. Mikisteb "Wiutelaw Keid complains that owing to tho fact that many repre sentatives of little Sonth American states are accredited ambassadors, they take precedence of him at big receptions. Naturally he feels much chagrined that a country as great as tho United States is shadowed in this way. lteid is liv ing in a palace at Paris. He pays $22,503 rent. The Italians who come to this countrj' are more anxious to learn the English language soon after they come here than any other race of immigrants from the continent of Europe. Even those Ital ians who have reached middle ago seem to understand the advantage of knowing the speech of tho country in which they are to live, and they hold views on this subject that differ from those held by many of our immigrants from other coun tries. There aro Italian classes that meet at night for the study of English, and many of the full-grown scholars find by experience that they aro able to master it after a time. It is a pity that the ex amplo of our Italians is not followed by all other immigrants from tho European continent. AN UGLY DISCOVERT. A Report That Should Bo Read. "A recent analyzatlon in Philadelphia by celebrated chemist of ten popular brands of Earsaparilla discloses thcastonishlngfact that theso ten samples of blood purifiers (?) con tained In the aggregate sixteen dlflcreut min erals, eleven of which were active poisons. Iodide of potash was discovered in ever' sam ple, mercury was found In all but two, while arsenic existed in sir of tho ten brands. Not one brand was tho pure article." A reporter took tho abovo clipping to E. W. Joy, tho manufacturer of Joy's Vegetable Sar Baparilla. Mr. Joy exhibited no surprise. He said druggists knew it. lie said he long aga saw the crying need for a safe and absolutely puro vegetable preparation of Earsaparilla, henco his was named Joy's vegetable Earsapa rilla, because It contained nothing but pure syrup of Earsaparilla, combined with tho puro jnlcesofCallfornla'svegetablealteratlves. Un like Totash Eflrsanarillos. it does not force im purities through tho Ekln but stimulates the various secretive organs, thereby correcting functional derangements and eliminating all Impuritii- through tho natural channels. son jranasco zzamintr. Poetiaxd, July 2C Tho gentlemen's races at iuversiue track to-morrow af ternoon will no doubt be largely attended as tho managers have left nothing un dono to insure their success. This afternoon about two o'clock dop- uty United States marshal W. W. Rob erts arrested Yosetine Neet, a Japaneso on a chargo of smuggling. Neet came from Victoria on the Canadian Pacific steamer Danube on her last trip and brought with him six boxes of very fine cigars which were not put down on the steamer's clearing papers. He was taken to the county jail where he will be kept tm to-morrow morning, when he will be examined before United States commis sioner Paul E. Deady. JamesHickeya longshoreman figures in justice Tattle's court to-day as an other wife beater. There was a slight fire this morning in a Chinese cigar factory on Pine street near Second. Loss very slight. After tho conclusion of tho agreement yesterday in tho mandamus case of lCich ard Everding, polico commissioner-elect against Henry E. McGinn, district at torney, in the circuit court judge Shat tuck allowed the petition of Mr. Everding. An order requiring Mr. McGinn to com mence quo warranto proceedings will be entered August 1, when the case will im mediately be appealed to the supreme court. Mr. McGinn seems to feel con fident that the supremo court will sup port his cause. He will mako a hard tight before that tribunal. Commission er Simon did not seem at all discomfited over judge Shattuck's decision. Mr. Simon is reads' to have his title to the office in dispute determined on ioints of law by the supreme court by whose decision he maintains he will show that he is no usurper but that ho is lawfully holding the omco he now nils . A NAVAL CADET'S BESIQNATION. Washington, Jul' 2G. Tho attorney general has decided that the resignation of a naval cadet when once accepted cannot be withdrawn. GOVEBNOB LOWBT AND SULLIVAN. Boston, July 2C The Jon rnaVs Wash ington special says: John L. Sullivan probably need fear no longer the gover nor of Mississippi, since he was defeated for re-election, and quotes ex-congressman McKee, of Mississippi as saying that Lowry used his campaign against Sullivan as a featuro in his canvass. COBBECIINQ FALSE BUMOBS. New Yobe, July 23. The archbishop of the diocese of ltochester, who has been in Rome for several months, has re turned home. The archbishop declared that tho re ports of the pope s ill health were in tho main gross exaggerations, and promul gated for various reasons. He had had numerous interviews with tho pope and had even seen him tho day previous to his departure for this country. Ho was then in excellent health and buoyant spirits and seemed to carry his great age of four-score years as lightly as many men carried half that number. Other reports which have been pub lished of late, that the pope was prepar ing to leavo itome and had already made arragements to purchase a seat in Spain, were, ho thought, groundless, as the clergy of Rome knew nothing of such a plan. "It is laughable," said the archbishop, "to hear that Archbishop Corriean has been summoned to Rome within the past few weeks. The Mculynn case is dead forever and tho authorities in the Eternal City are not concerned about him or his doctrines." The archbishop will not go to Rome for two or three years, when the time for his regular decennial visit will ar rive. It is safe to say that the Dr. Mc- uiynn case win not ue pare oi tue dusi ness transacted. Regarding Cardinal Gibbons' chances of becoming pope, which have been talked of and written of recently, the archbishop said that they amounted to practically nothing. "In fact." said he. with a broad smile on his lips, "the latest report which I heard before I left Rome was that a certain member of the New York press was to be chosen as the suc cessor of Pope Leo." "I only say that," he added, breaking into a laughg, "to provo what little truth there can be in such a rumor. The fact of his being an American does not bar him from succession to the pontificial chair, but the cardinals of the papal col lege recognize the fact that owing to the state of affairs, and the peculiar political combinations and complications m Italy, an Italian pope is an absolute necessity." The Verdict Unanimous . W. D. Suit, Druggist. Bippus. I ml., lesunes: "i can recommend .Electric Bitters as the very best remedy. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellville, Ohio, allinns: "Thebe'st selling medi cine l nave ever handled in my 20 years experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou sands of others have added their testi mony, so that the verdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of tho Liver, Kidneys or Blood. Only a half dollar a bottle at J. W. It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That there lived a maiden whom you may know, By the name of Annabello Leigh If sho happened not to be christened so, Its nothing to you or me! She was a child and I was a child In this kingdom by the sea; And that was tho fact that mado us wild, For wo longed to bo great and free Whereas I was only five years old And sho was exactly three! Oft times we would take our frugal lunch, I and my Annabello Leigh, And go and sit on ; beach uiul munch While the fishes came up from the sea, And panted with envy to hoar us crunch The bones of a chickadee! The fishes would cry. "Pray throw us what's left," To me and my Annabello Leigh; But nothing ever was left, so deft With our knives and forks were we; And, "Oh, what pigs!" this school bereft, Would groan at us frequently! Hut a big fish came to that shiniii" strand, As I and my Annabelle Leigh Were one day digging for clamp, in tho sand For with nature's tongs, dug we So ha made one grab at Annabelle's hand, And carried her off from me. Now tho moon never beams but it brings to me dreams Of my beautiful Annabelle Leigh; And the stars never rise but 1 seo tho bright eyes Of my beatifu'l Annabelle Leigh: And 1 think as 1 toil, of cod-liver oil, And her tomb in the sounding sea, Of the big cod fish that swallowed her swish He's her sepulchre now in the sea.
