The Webster was coming into the harbor under full sail before a stiff breeze and a heavy sea, when she struck, and her keel was immediately smashed. The crew proceeded to Popoff island, where they separated among several vessels. The Webstei.? commander, Henry McCalmond, haB arrived here on the schooner Wanderer. The vessel was valued at 814,000, and was insured in the Firemen's Fund and other companies for S8, 000, and was owned by Solomon Jacobs. Captain McCalmond reports that another sealing vessel from San Fran cisco, name unknown, had foundered at sea with all hands aboard, except ing two seamen who reached shore safely. There is some misunderstanding among foreigu insnrauce companies as to the manner lot complying with the law in relation to making deposits with the treasurer of state for the security of persons transacting busi ness with such corporations. The old law provided for a deposit of 50, O0U in TJ. S. bonds, Oregon slate boudi, county or school district bonds, but this law was so amended by Ihe last legislature as to read, '"or bonds or notes secured! by first mortgage up on unincumbered real estate within the state ot Oregon." Under the law passed by the legislature some foreign insurance companies have offered to deposit SoO.OCO in mortgages upon Oregon real estate, but refuse to assign the mortgages to the treasurer. State treasurer Webb declines to accept them, Unless assigned. -Albany Herald.
