Then each of tho regulators with long switches struck each of tho prisoners a sounding blow. By the time the last blow was given two of the man had fainted and the others were wet with blood. After whipping them the men's legs were given a thick coating of tar and feathers and they were warned to leave instantly or suffer death. Tho names of tho mormons are Asa F. Hixson, J. H. Aided and abetted by Barnard, ho got an old rusty case that once held the works of a $2 watch, and broko MoGillas's heart by telling him that was the watch that ho had put up S2 good money on. The nest night A. J. Megler, of the Occident, sent in an envelope a tooth that one of liis Portland guests had forgotten. It was to bo given to Seeley, who knew the owner, and who would deliver it. So soon as McGil las round thi3 out he followed the de livery of it to Seelov, and before a crowd who had been joshing him about the watch, McGillas roared eut: "Here. Secretary Noble has rendered a decision in a California land case which is of great importance to the Pacific coast. It involves 600 or more land claims in California alone. It was brought be for secretary Noble by Uriah Stone on an appeal from a ruling by the juuu commissioner, wuo rejected tne commutation homestead Droof of the appellant in his entry of a quarter section oi iana in tne Han i rancisco district, and required him to submit new proof after due publication and posting notice before an officer author ized to take proof. Tho proof was rejected because it was advertised and taken before a superior court judge an officer, it seems, not autho rized to take commuted proof, as it should have been taken before a county clerk. The secretary says lucre is noimng io indicate mat any one was misled because of this tech nical failure to comply with the law in its strictest sense, and interprets the law as having been substantially complied with. Secretary Noble directs that this case and all others of n similar character be referred to the board of adjudication, which means that the board will decide that the entry is valid and should pa3s to patent. At first I supposed them to be young herring or sardines, but upon close inspection I found them to be genuine shrimp. Large quantities of them were left upon the beach and as the surf was quito light I could have taken a thou sand with one dip of a common bucket This indicates that there aro large shrimp beds off shore here, which up to this time I have never hear d of. 1" am positive they were shrimp as I had. at least one hundred in my hand which I gathered at one grab."
