No dispatches this morning. The stale fair and the rain came together. According to the almanacs now in autumn. we are i Th ?,Vl- Miles Roes to Gray's harbor this morning. Trade in umbrellas and rubber goods is reported lively. Fine for tho health of the city; the showers will flush the "sewers." . The Oberon and Villolta went up yesterday. Tho Willamette arrived in. There is a right smart chance of pats springing ' up in tho custom house yard. Washington county is talking of building a wagon road to Tillamook to get mat trade. The Astoria Sangerbuud will hold its regular meeting at its rooms at 8 o clock this evening. The British bark Dovenby, 833, Fraser master, from Maryport, En gland, April 7th, arrived in yesterday. The point has not yet been selected where the Astoria and South Coast railroad bridge will cross Young's river. 0. F. Heed is in jail at Seattle, being unable to get S500 bail, on a charge of obtaining money under false pre tenses. The latest organization is one to unearth treasure at the mouth of the river. There is no stock for sale in this enterprise. A north Front street, Portland, business man has trained n mouse to catch flies, thus upsetting all the the ories of the naturalists. Frank P. Martin, of Hollister, Cal., suicided with morphine at the Quito by House, Portland last Wednesday night; no cause ascertainable. A few election bets, principally for hats, are being made. But little coin has so far been put up in this dee strict on the result of next Novem ber's election. Travel on the boats to and from Astoria continues brisk, on the night boats especially. There is considera ble passenger traffic between here and Gray's harbor. Tacoma hop men will let the hops rot on their vines rather than hire Chinamen to pick 'era. That may be sense in Tacoma but over here it looks like idiocy. David S. Terry still succeeds in getting his name into tho California newspapers. Ho killed United States senator Dave Broderick twenty-nine years ago to-day. C. G. White, tho bnilder of the W. T. pilot boat C. G. While, and the schooner C. O. White, has challenged the America at San Francisco to a race with his schooner for 81,000 a side. "An inch" of rain fell yesterday. That means a gallon of water spread over a surface of two square feet, or a fall of about one hundred tons of water from the clouds on each acre of surface. The Prine villa News says 50 cents is too ranch to pay for a watermelon, and wants a railroad right away. So soon as they get ono they'll be kick ing worse than over over some imag inary cinch. "A Nebraska man has bet his wife againBt a cow that Harrison will be elected." 'Sthat so? An upper As toria woman has bet her husband against a brindle bull that Cleveland will be elected. Bill Brown, a brother of Mart. Brown, for many years editor of the Albany Democrat, was killed in a sa loon row in Burns, Grant Co., a few days ago. He was considerable of a bully, but run a bluff on the wrong man. The News says the fisheries dis pute at Yaqnina bay has been settled without the assistance of shotguns or a president's message. Tho fishermen and cannerymen have compromised on a price and all is serene once more. Wiggins, tho Ottawa weather crank, ha lip.fln heard from. Ho says we will have cold weather in the United States from the 3rd to tho 9th of Onfohflr. Wicpv. old man. the cold est days will be those just following the Cth of November. Mr. Taffe and his son have been ar rested at Celilo, charged with viola tion of tho salmon law. He ha3 two fish wheels there and scoops ya every thing in the way of salmon that comes along. Gov. Pennoyer had him arrested and proposes to enforce the law. We wonder if the report is true, re marks the Chicago NewS "flat and sharp"man, that Mrs. Cleveland is preparing a campaign document, which, when delivered, will beat every other campaign document in sight. That Chicago man is altogether too fresh. The steam schooner Michigan leaves San Francisco to-morrow for the Columbia with freight, and is expected here about Tuesday next She will load wheat at Portland and lumber at Skamokawa for San Fran cisco. Capt. W. H. Whitcomb will be the pilot between here and Port land. The Seattle Press tells of a family of father, mother and a little girl who have proved experts in the art of hop picking. They go to work about 6 o'clock in the morning, quit at 4 in iue aiternoon, ana averaged nine boxes per day during the whole time they have been at work. That means nine dollars per day. . . A very handy book of reference Ins been added to the number at the oounty clerk's office. It is for refer ence and by looking at it one can tell tho nature of any instrument record ed in the office, the date, the grantor, grantee, fee, etc. It saves innumera ble questions and handling of records, and is as handy as a pocket in a shirt. Capt Bullene tells the Seattle Post-Tntelhyencer that the Alaska salmon pack ran far ahead of the ex pectations of the men engaged in the business, none of whom were pre pared for such a catch. The Cutting i-acKing company alone put up 137,- uuu cases oi salmon at tneir two can. neries at Cook's inlet this season, Most of the canneries ran out of tin before the season was half over. At the session of the Sovereign Grand Lodge I. O. O. F., at Los An geles, Cal a., last Wednesday, several amendments to the constitution, pro- poseu at mo session or ihsy, were considered, and one relating to ap peals was adopted. The proposition to admit young men of 18 years to membership was rejected, the vote on rollcall standing 100 in favor and 51 against, the necessary three-fourths not being secured. A committee of the IJoslyn miners are in Tacoma to make arrangements with the Northern Pacific Railroad company relativo to going to work. The company shut down the mines last week, as it would not brook the dictation of the miners. As winter is approaching and the shut-down was not anticipated, tho men are anx ious to get to work again. Assistant general manager Buckley says he does not kuow what the company will do. The United States fish commission lately sent to California COO live lob sters, 350 of which arrived safely at Sacramento. Several attempts had previously been made to send live lobsters neross the North American continent, bnt had failed. In the present instance Col. McDonald, fish commissioner, personally superin tended the packing of the lobsters. A crate or box devised by the late Captain Chester was used. This was placed within another larger, box, the intervening space being filled with pounded ice. A Canadian Pacific representative now in San Francisco, sums up the new agreement between that com pany and the Pacific Mail, thus: "We agree to keep out of their territory if they will keep out of ours. In other words, we leave them entirely alone in San Francisco, and they are not to interfere with us in Portland and other northern ports. We ate han dling a percentage of the mill pro ducts of California for Chinese ex port trade, bnt will now confine our attention to the northwestern trade, of which we are free to handle as mnch a" we choose." The steamship Jlatacia brings in formation that the schooner Aran nah has been seized off Copper island by tho Alaska Commercial company's steamer William II., and towed into Yladivostock, where she is now held. The captain said ho had represented the matter to tho British consul at St Petersburg, claiming that he was on the high seas when taken. It will be interesting to know what will be come of the unfortunate Indians and crew. The Araunuh was brought out from Nova Scotia last year, is 73 tons register, and is owned jointly by Hall, Goepel & Co., and her captain. "H will surprise you, I dare say," said A. K. Delaney, collector of cus toms at Sitka, Alaska, to a reporter, "to know that the greatest gold mine in the world is situated at Juneau Cily. about 150 miles from Sitka. I state it however as a fact. It is called the Pans mine, and one of the principal owners is Senator Jones, of Nevada. The mine produces from 875,000 to 8100,000 worth of gold bullion per month, and experts say that enough is in sight to furnifh this amount for 400 years. If this be trne, and I have no reason to doubt it, the mine ought to be worth several hundred million to the syndicate which controls it. One-halt of the mine was originally pnrchased for SboU. or tlieotlierhalf a tntlemore was paid." The steamer Mountaineer, plying between Seattle ana rort Orchard points, possesses a steam whistle of rather startling qualities. While passing a logging camp situated some distance inland from Port Orchard bay, the whistle made one of its at tempts to glide through the chro matic scale in a very irregular man ner, the vibrations striking the ear of a wood chopper who mistook it for that of a cougar. Throwing down his ax, the chopper started on a run for his gun, shouting as he did so, to his comrades, "Come boys, a cougar by the Lord." Tne otuers were unde cided, until again the shriek of defi ance reverberated through the woods when all joined pell mell in the pur suit. After losing several hours in a fruitless search for tho prowler, it was ascertained that the shriek had its origin in the throat of the Moun taineer's whistle. The Tacoma correspondent of the Mississippi Lumberman says that the effort being put forth to break up the lumber trust of the Puget sound mills is likely to succeed. The order of the association limiting work in all the mills to eight hours perday, went into force on the 5th inst, but the success of the competitive enterprise of the Davises in shinning and Ballinc lumber at San Diego at 30 per cent less than the trust price, together with the increase in the number of mills, will, it thinks, almost certainly DreaK up tne combination. Tne case, as far as the trust is concerned, is that the mills in the trust, and these include all who have been engaged in the export trade, will not pay more than 85.50 per thousand for logs, and insist upon having their own scaler, and refuse to sell any rough lumber at less tnan Slo per thousand, deliv ered in San Francisco, and charge from that price upwards to 830, ac cording to the grade. Senator Dolph presented to the senate last Wednesday a petition from the board of trade of Portland, asking tnat the waterway improve ment at the cascades of the Colum bia be begun at once. He called upon the chief engineers and urged tha) the engineer at tho cascades be instructed to begin work immedi ately. The chief of engineers then telegraphed the engineer at the cas cades to begin work at once. Captain Saxe of the schooner Ad die C. Hasseltine, and his crew, had a remarkable experience on their last voyage to San Francisco, arriving last Wednesday, fifty-seven days out from the Marshall islands, with not a single thing edible in tho store house. Capt Saxe did not consider when he started that the voyage would last longer than thirty days, but he took provisions sufficient for forty. The lit tle schooner was becalmed for days to gether, and finally the provisions gave out, although toward the last every thing was carefully hoarded. Luck ily the steward discovered a barrel of beans and some lard, and for several weeks the captain and his six men lived onjbeans and lard cake, relieved by cocoanut. They grew so tired of this that they could eat but little. PERSONAL MENTION. Miss Callie Munson is in the city. E. C. Crow of Knappa, is in the city. Mr. A. L. Thielsen goes to Clatsop this morning. Two gentlemen who had crossed from Hood's canal to tho Wynoocho and followed that stream, arrived in town Tuesday morning. Thoy say that they struck the Wynoocho river near its source, about fifty miles from Montesano, and nearly duo north of us. The river is nearly as largo for many miles nbovc the settlement as it is further down. There are three "narrows" or rapids in tho stream, from six to eight miles apart. Most of tho country they state to bo very fine, and when cleared will make as good farms as can be found any where. The timber of that region they deolared to be even better on the average, than that of the sur veyed land. In high water logs could be lloated down for thirty-live or forty mites, the great difficulty at present being to get supplies up so far. At different points clone the route were small open prairies, but most of the land is covered with a fine growth of timber. Montesano Vidette. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of the Throat and Lungs than any otner. it is probable tnat every one, without exception, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Uerms into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to con tinue their ravages they extend to tho lungs producing Consumption and to the head, causing Catarrh. Now nil this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in time canso death. At the onset. von must act with prompt ness; allowing a cold to go withont your attention is dangerous and may lose you your life.
