Seattle, Aug. 17. Salmon arc running fairly well on the Sound now, and packing will begin soon in earnest. There arc, five canning companies on the Sound now, as follews: ueorgc 1. Myers at Milton, Seattle Packing company at Muckilteo, King County Pack ing company at Seattle, Columbia Packing company at Seattle, and Puget Sound Packing company at Sainish. The probable pack for the season on the Sound is esti mated variously at from 25,000 to 40,000 cases. It is also estimatfil that the canneries will pnv out about $60,000 this season. The fishermen have organized and fixed the price at 17 i'eiit apiece for salmon. The cannera will not pav more than 10, cents. The fishermen's union men sav they will patrol the fishing grounds and draw all the nets to land if worked by non-union men. The canners declare that there will be a large number of impromptu and cheap funerals if such a game is attempted. Next week is ex pected to bring about interesting developments in fishing circles of the Sound. He Promptly Corrected His Error. It was at a railway eatinir sta tion. The man from Montana was hungry and in a hurry. "rlease pass me them pertaters, mister," he fa:d, addressing the elder gentleman from Boston who sat next to him. The Bostonian slowly focused his gold eyeglasses on the man from Montana. "Did you think that I was one of the waiters?" he asked icily. The others held their knives and forks suspended in mid-air, ex pecting to see the man from Mon tana shrivel up, but no such phe nomenon took place. He turned and beckoned to the nearest waiter, "George, come here, please." "What is it, sir," asked "George." "I want to apologize to you, that is all. You see I mistook this party here for you, but I hope you won't be offended at it. Now pass me them pertaters and we'll go on with the round-up." San JFrancisco Examiner. A curious idea as to relative values is given by the publication in the same issue of a St. Paul newspaper of two local court items, one of which states that a certain railroad company has been sued for -5,000 damages by the admin istrator of a citizen who lost his life, if is alleged, by the negligence of some of the company's em ployes. The second item is to the effect that another railroad com pany has been sued by an engin eer who wishes to obtain $20,000 as recompense for the loss of his foot, which was badly injured while he was temporarily acting as brake man.
