A tkust company has heard of Milk river, Mont, and wants to sMm nnd fence it in. As eastern man sent a dollar to learn how an advertiser could "guar antee a man to make S1.200 a year without work," and was told to put up 812,000 at 10 per cent. - Divorce in Switzerland is theoreti cally easy, but the couple seeking it must go before a magistrate every four months for two years and insist that they continue to desire it. This make3 it rather uncommon. Fobt Keogh, M. T., can claim the honor of showing the widest range of temperature of any place on earth. Last summer the thermometer ranged from 120' to 130" above, while re cently it marked C5 below zero, -a total range of 195. Dr. Faxtox of New York has re cently gotten into a controversy by preaching a sermon on the Bible story of the camel and the needle's eye. It was supposed by some that the doctor had reference to Jay Gould in his declarations. Dr. Faxton ex plains, however, that the sermon was general in its nature, and its doctrine was that a rich man could get into heaven as easily as a poor man if he used his riches properly. The vice-presidency is, according to mo3t politicians, the most inconse quential office in our government. Yet four men elected vice-president have been made presidents through the death of the executives with whom tlieyfwere chosen. Daniel Webster, although always desiring the presi dency, twice missed it through Ins rat- willingness to take the lower office. Thurlow Weed urged Webster to take the nomination under Harrison, and again when Taylor was nominated, but he refused, beneath his dignity. Then, in each ca3e as when the vice- president was promoted by the death of the superior officer, Webster went into the cabinet as secretary of state, feeling, probablv, that bnt for his pride he might have been himself selecting the cabinet instead of being a part of it At a Famcll banquet in London on the Cth iust, Sir Thomas Henry Grattan Esmondo, just returned from America, presented to the home-rule treasurer a check forSlO.OOO subscribed by citizens of New York. It was a very handsome and no doubt very welcome gift Could the total of American subscriptions to the Far nell fund be learned they would, we think, be astonished at the sum of patriotic devotion thereby manifested; and it would perhaps be remembered that the greater portion of the vast amount had come from the pockets of men and women "who had worked hard for it and who in giving it exer cised tho greatest self-denial. Parnell, his fellow parliamentarians and his numerous agents and lieutenants onght to be very prudent in their ex penditure of the subscriptions poured in upon them, for it is not the money of millionaires they are spending, but a percentage from the weekly wages of cooks, housemaids, laborers, mechanics and underpaid and over worked clerks and salesgirls. I m The bill creating a natioual depart ment of labor has become a law. The head of the department will be known as the commissioner of labor, and his salary will bo 5,000 a j ear. He is to hold office for four years. The duties of tha commissioner are to acquire and diffuse among the people of the United States information connected Tvith labor in the most general and comphrehonsive sense of the word, and especially in relation to capital, the hours of labor, earnings of work ing men and women, and the means of promoting their material, social, intellectual, and moral prosperity. It is especially charged to ascertain, whenever industrial changes shall make it essential, the cost of produc ing articles at tho time dutiable in the United States in leading countries where such articles are produced, un der a classification showing the differ ent elements of cost of such articles of production; to establish a system of reports by which, at intervals of Jiot less than two years, he can tell the general condition, so far as pro duction is concerned, of the leading industries of the country. He is also to investigate all controversies and disputes between employers and em ployes which may tend to interfere with the welfare of the people, and re port thereon to congress. The law virtually expands tho present bureau of labor statistics, which is a branch of the interior department, into a di vision of the government Umbrellas Repaired At my old stand. J. JorLDf.
