CoL Jas. Taylor has leased a part ot his property east of Smith's point on Youngs bay to two parties who propose the erection there of a com modious hotel, for the convenience ot summer visitors. The site is a most eligible one for the purpose. At a meeting of the directors of the Astoria building and loan associ ation last evening the following offi cers were elected: President, J. P. Dickinson; vice-president, O. S. Wright: treasurer, A. S. Reed; sec retary, W. Ii. Eobb; attorney, C. R. Thomson. The fourth series of stock will be opened on the 1st of next month. The subscription bonds aro now open at the secretary's office. Up to noon yesterday tho sun was hot and an east wind made people seek the shady side of the street. As the sun crossed the meridian the wind shifted to the west, a cool breeze from the Paoific blew through the streets, and the listless, dry languor that the east wind always brings, gave way to the delicious freshness of feel ing and buoyancy of frame that is an unfailing accompaniment of our brac ing western breeze. Senator Dolph said last Monday that he proposed to see that a num ber of appropriations for the improv ment of rivers and harbors of Oregon should be increased. He thinks the state has been neglectodby the house committee, and as he is a member of the committee on commerce in the senate, to which the bill has been re ferred, be will take the opportunity to enlarge the appropriation for Ore gon. He said that the committee was at work upon the bill, and would in all probability have it done in three or four weeks. The following changes hnve been made in the positions of officers in revenue service on this ceast: First assistant engineer Charles W. Mun roe of tho launch Search at Balti more and second assistant Horace B. West of the Corwin have been or dered to the Bear: chief engineer J. 0. Jeffries and third lieutenant J. H. Brown, to the Vorwm; chief engi neer J. A. JJoyle, detacnea irom tne Woleott at Port Townsend, and with third lieutenant Frank H. Dimock as signed to the liusli, and chief engi neer James T. Wayson, detached from the Corwin, to go to the Wol cott. Two Cannery Assignments. The Columbia Canning company of this city yesterday made an assign ment to C. W. Fulton. On nccount of its" commercial relations with Wm. T. Coleman & Co., the recent assign ment ot that firm makes it necessary to have a business settlement, and to facilitate matters an' assignment has been made, Tho cannery is doing well and it is believed will make money this season. If allot the in vestments and business enterprises ot Wm. T. Coleman & Co. were as satisfactory financially as his Colum bia river salmon ventures and trans actions thev wonldbemany million dollars on the right side of the ledger. The Thistle Packing Co., another ot W. T. Coleman & Co.'s agency can neries, also made an assignment yes terday afternoon. These two with the Aberdeen Canning company are the only canneries in this vicinity in which Wm. T. Coleman & Co. were interested at the time of their failure. They have, however, several impor tant holdings in Alaska salmon can neries. To Bent. A cood heuse: 5 roems: fine locality. Inquire of 1. W. Case. Morton of Chicago wa3 chosen temporary chairman. After the opening address and the appoint ment of the usual committees the convention adjourned till two o'clock. It is clear that the chief difficulty before the convention will be preparing a platform. The green backers at their conference last night made but little progress toward merging into the new party. The drift of the sentiment is iu favor of holding fast to their name and the leading principles of the organization. xne union labor taction snows anx iety to combine but their cardinal principles of land tax is repugnant to tne greater portion of the union labor men. THE M. E. CONFEBENCE. New Yobk, May 15. At the Tues day session of the Methodist confer ence bishop Andrews presided. This was referred to the committee on state and church. The report of the general confer ence committee on consolidation, unification and reorganization of church benevolences was Lauded in and occasioned a spirited debate. The report recommended the con solidation of all missionary societies, church and board of foreign missions, consolidation of board of home mis sions and church extensions, consoli dation ot Sunday school union and tract society. It also recom mended that a commission be appointed to determine what proper ty held for missionary purpo3e3 in this country shall be conveyed to tho board of home missions nnd church extension and also to make equitable division of tho assets of the society. Samuel Ternahan, a young man of Green's noint. on tho Columbia, was badly injured by n rolling log yesterday morning, and was brought to this city last night on the Bonita. Tho steamer arrived in about 7 SO o'clock, and ho was at once taken to St. Vincent's hospital. The accident happened at Mr. Tema han's logging camp, at Green's point, which is near Bradbury, Or., about half way between Portland nnd Astoria. About 10 o'clock A. M. Mr. Ternahan was handling five yoke of oxen with five largo logs. He had started to come down a very steep skid road when the logs took a start, and before he could get oat of tho way one of the larcest of them caught his foot and carried him under, drag ging him along the ground for a distance of three rods, when it came to a stop against an embankment. It was found impossible to extricate tho wounded man until wedges and jackscrews were brought to bear. Eight men worked three-quarters of an hour before they were able to relieve him from his position. Tho log that rolled on him was a very largo one and would scale 2400 feet. The injured man was conscious throughout the day, giving orders how he should be extricat ed, and that ho should be at once re moved to his home, which was of course done. Dr. Harry Cliff having been telo graphed for, met the boat at St. Helens and carefully dressed the man's injuries on the way up. Mr. Ternahan is a young man of 21 years, the eldest son of F. Ter nahan, an old-timer, who came to Ore gon twenty-five years ago. His father and young wife (he having been married only seven months) accompanied him to this city. Ho is a young man of rino physique, and of steady and industrious habits. He was working at his own logging-camp getting out logs for Hogue & Young of Oak Point. Oregon ifui 15. PROM BOSTON'. Boston, May 8 th, 1883. Editor Asterian: Our Gloucester mackerel fleet aro fitting out for June 8th, the expiration of the close sea son. The market is bare ot this class of fish. Tho cod fleet will be large the coming season from Labrador to Cape Cod. The feeding demand ot the world is large, nnd fishermen have no excuse for idleness. The fishing capacity ot our continent is limitless. New England is taking increased quantity of your salmon tinned. It is a commerce that will grow as the magnitude of resource on your shores enable the cannerymen to utilize the machinery of canning to a very low cost. Its great volume is capable of carrying into its commerce men of great intelligence and busi ness capacity. The wires inform us of the failure of your great commercial house, W. T. Coleman & Co. Tho regret is not confined to Boston, but extends all over the country. It illustrates the meaning of tho maxim, "human en terprises are limitless, but alas capac ity is a function of limit." W. S. What The "News" Hears. It ho3 been rumored on the streets for some time that the O. R- & N. Co. have been negotiating with the Wil lamette River Steamboat company for a lease of their steamer Multno mah. It has also been rumored that Mr. Jacob Kamm and Capt. U. B. Scott would work together in trying to capture tho seaside trade this sea sou. Although tho News is very reliably informed that both of the above ru mors are well founded, they have not been officially con firmed. Mr. Kamm, with the two fleet boats, the Undine and Lurline, would be a valnablo addition to the Columbia River Transportation company's forces. It looks ns though the O. R. k. X. Co. with its numerous boats, is going to make a hard fight for the seaside trade this year, and it stands Messrs. Kamm and Scott in hand to doublo up their forces. Portland News, 15. An Explanation. What is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem now to be af flicted? If you will remember a few years ago the word Malarin was com paratively unknown, to-day it isas common as any word in tho English language, yet this word covers only the meaning of nnother word used by our forefathers in times past. So it is with nervous diseases, as they and Malaria are intended to cover what our grandfathers called Billiousncss, and all are caused by troubles that arise from a diseased condition of the Liver which in performing its func tions finding it cannot dispose of ibe b.le through the ordinary channel is compelled to pass it off through the system, causing nervous troubles, Malaria, Billions Fever, etc. Yon who are suffering can well appreciate a cure. We recommend Green's Au gust Flower. Its cures are mar velous. It Only Needs a Little Paxil. A competent engineer states that a railroad from Astoria to Clatsop beach would of necessity be very ex pensive. The ground on the west side of Young's river is very marshy and would necessitate piling nnd trestling the greater part of the whole distance. Such work would cost So or S6 a foot or an expense of over $25,000 a milo. Even nt this great cost the road would undoubt edly b-3 a paying investment, could capitalists be induced to venture their money upon its constuction. While there are so many other cer tain means ot making money bear the fruit of large interest, it is difficult to obtain it for the less lucrative pur pose of developing the country and enlarging its resources and capabili ties. uregoman, io.
