Jacobsen, who had been in the- province for some years collecting Indian curios for the Hamburg Museum and writing up the habits, customs and tradi tions of the aborigines, arrived down on the Boscowitz from Bella Coola. The professor spent all last winter at Tucalo, the head of the southernmost of the Bentinck arms, which is distant from Bella Coola about eighty miles. Here he found the Indian in his primi tive state, a wild untutored savage, with but a scant knowledge of the arts or customs of civilization. The inlet, running far inland, and being every way out of the course of traders or prospectors, is never visited, and the Indians say no white man ever went up to the head of it before. They live there as they do in most places around the coast, by hunting and fishing, deer and fur bearing animals abounding in large numbers. They are without missionaries and can nibalism is rampant. The pro fessor tells of some sickening sights which he witnessed there during the past winter, which at this day no one could believe capable of being witnessed so near home, did the information not come from a reli able person. The custom is still carried out there of men ambitious for the honors of chieftain betak ing themselves to the woods, and after remaining there for some time, coming back possessed of a spirit and biting pieges of flesh from the bodies of those whom they first meet. One who wished to graduate last winter went out and remained from sight for sev eral weeks, though he came near the camp occasionally and made night hideous with his yells. When he came to the tribe he came naked, notwithstanding that it was the middle of winter, with two or three feet of snow on the ground. The first man he met he seized, knocked down and bit a piece out of his arm, which he chewed ravenously. This was repeated many times over his face becoming besmeared with blood and presenting a fiendish appearance. The victims of the would-be-chieftain's bites receive in return for their pains a small pecuniary compensation, and it is an honor to carry the scar. The more scars of this kind that decor ate an Indian's body, the in r numerous are his honors, and when he comes to have a good many he becomes a chieftain himself in a little way. The biter on one occasion made a break for the pro fessor who soon gave him to under stand that he was going to experi ence something pretty tough if he tackled him. He was not further molested. It is tho intention of professor Jacobsen to reside in the provinces permanently, and will go north again. He brought down with him many valuable curios, which will be forwarded to Germany. Distress After Eating. This result of Indigestion will no louger be experienced if Simmons Liver Regulator is taken alter each meal. It is such a good digester, and so mild and pleasant in its effect that it is used by many, after a heatty meal, to insure good digestion. The Regulator does not nauseate or irritate the stomach, but cor rects acidity, dispels foul gases, allays irritation and assists the stomach in its digestion. An Over Supply. Wallula is flooded with about 600 idle men, who cannot find work and have no money. It seems that G. "W. Hunt sent east to an agency for 150 Italian labor ers, to work on his Branch road, and they sent him GOO men, and wnen tney came lie could not use over a quarter of the number, and as there is no work there for the remainder of the men, they are in a hard predicament. They appear to be ready and willing to work, and are good quiet men; but un der the pressure for food they often compel restaurant men to feed them gratis. This state of affairs cannot continue. The Sound offers the best inducement for them and it is expected thev will go there, but how having no money unless the R. R. Co. car ries them free? Mrs. Amanda Davidson died recently at Tillamook. She was the daughter of James and Annie Quick, and was born November 26, 1853, the first white girl born in Tillamook county. She leaves a husband and two small children. Unearned Land Grants. The land grant forfeiture bill has been passed by the senate. The first section declares forfeited to the United States all lands granted to any state or to any cor poration to aid in the construction of railroads opposite to and co terminus with the portion of such railroad not now completed and in operation, for construction or ben efit of which lands have heretofore been granted, and all such lands are declared to be part of the pub lic domain. The act is not to be construed as forfeiting the right of way or depot gronnds of any railroad company heretofore granted nor as limiting the rights granted to purchasers or settlers by "an act to provide for the ad justment of land grants made by congress to aid in 'the construction of railroads and the forfeiture of lands and for other purposes," ap proved March 3, 1887, or as re pealing, altering or amending that act, or as in any manner affecting any cause of action existing in fa vor of tho purchaser. The second section authorizes persons in possession of any such lands prior to the 1st of January, 1882, to purchase them within two years from the United States, in quantities not exceeding 320 acres, at the rate of $2.50 per acre. The third section refers to tho lands of the Northern Pacific com pany, heretofore forfeited, and gives persons in possession of them prior to the first of July, 18S5, a like right, and confirms to the city of Portland the. right-of-way and riparian rights of a water-pipe line. The fourth scctiQn reserves the right to forfeit other railroad grant lands for failure, past or future, to comply with the conditions of the grants. The fifth section exempts from the operation ot Jhe act certain grants to the states-of Mississippi and Alabama. The sixth section fixes the price of the even numbered sections ol land within the limits of forfeited land grants at 1.20 an acre. The seventh section repeals cer tain sections of the land grant acts for Minnesota and Iowa, and the last section refers especially to the lands of the Portage Lake canal company. If j'our blood is vitiated, cleanse it without delay by the use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. John Bates, who is living at the age of S5 in Chicago, was deputy postmaster of the "Lake City" in 1832-33, under Andrew Jackson. Business was not heavy and Mr. Bates used to carry the mail in his pocket. In those days it required 25 cents to get a letter, and the reports made to the department of the business done were made in pounds, shillings and pence. Major Gilbert of Palmyra, N. Y., who is well known as the composi tor of tho first Mormon Bible, celebrated his eighty-sixth birth day the other day by doing a good day's work at the case in the office of the Palmyra Courier. He saved the first sheet of the book of Mor mon printed from each form, and preserved tho book until a short time ago, when he sold it for 500. sSU- WEIGHT SSsS3ssaa!aBss5sae55BBEBa3SSBcacr IU superior excellence proven In millions of homes for more than a quarter of a cent ury. During the time of the construc tion of the Northern Pacific rail road through this city several Chinamen were killed by an unex pected explosion. They were buried near the track on Cannon's addition, and the bodies have been permitted to remain there until recently, when Dr. Campbell, act ing as health officer, issued an or der for their removal. As the friends of the deceased were pre paring the bones for shipment to China, considerable interest was taken by bystanders who hap pened to be in that vicinity. As one body was taken from its box twenty-dollar gold pieces began to drop from a decomposed belt about the waist. Six twenties, one ten and one five-dollar piece, beside about 300 worth of gold dust, was the amount found. It was evident from appearances that this body was fearfully man gled, and hence it is supposed that owing to snperstitions of their race the Chinamen did not dare touch this body in its man gled condition lest some evil should befall them.
