Congress has assembled after the holidays, and as congressmen sometimes lack the time and some times the inclination to procure facts and figures, it may be of use to them, as well as to other peo ple, to know how other countries rank as to the value of the produc tion of the principal articles the world needs and uses. The United States stand first in the production of cereals, the value being 1,101,215,453. Russia comes next with $1,109,159,673. Germany is third, the value being $750,148,109, and Austria-Hunpary fourth with $648,043,475. Great Britain, including India, Australia, Canada and all its other colonies and dependencies, only produced cereals to the value of 437,282, 910, which is 8,000,000 than the production of France. In the production of potatoes the United States is fourth, the value being 73,302,480. Russia is first in this, with 450,000,000; German empire second, with $263, 550,090; and Austria-Hungary third, with 158,840,445. In or chard fruits Germany is first, pro ducing 62,943,623, and the United States second, with 51,756,847. The United States produces S233,443,356 of cotton and cotton seed oil; British India 83,121,9S0, and Egypt gives 43,805,460 for export. The value of the live stock in the United States is 81,279,560, 190, which is more than the com bined value of the stock of all other countries. Russia and Great Britain each have 80,000,000, Germany 60,000,000, and Austria Hungary 35,000,000. In dairy products Germany leads with 83, 573,000, the United States being second, with 50,482,1S6. In hay Great Britain produces more than all the world, the value being 81,200,000,000; Austria Hungary third with 261,000,000, and Germanv fourth with 175, 000,000. In the production of sugar and molasses Germany ranks firft, the value being 190,000,000 in 1S85, which was largely increased in 1886; Cuba is second with S113, 960,000; Austria-Hungary third, S9G,850,000; France fourth, S95, 289,000; Russia fifth, with 85, 176,000. Of hides and tallow the United States produces 82,949,207 worth; Russia follows close after with S1,000,000; France is third, with $42,420,000; Germany fourth,$41, 150,000,'and Austria-Hungary fifth with 37,480,000. As a wool producer the United States stands first, the values be ing 72,464,201; Australia second, 47,358,000; the Argentine Re public third, 95,046,955; Russia fourth, 33,615,200, Austria-Hungary fifth, 30,6G3,000; France sixth, 16,654,000, and Germany seventh, 15,582,000. In wine and spirits Spain comes first, with values of 178,680,000; Germany second, S119,360,000; Russia third, S78,103,750; the United States fourth, 76,464,201; France fifth, 75,767,932, andltalv sixth, 65,265,000. In malt liq" uors Germany comes first, with 874,907,588, and the United States second, 61,400,000. In tobacco and cigars France comes first, with $72,850,000; Turkey second, 60,500,000, and the United States third, with 44, 160,150. In oils Italy leads, with 80,216,000; Russia is second, with 72,500,650; the United States third, 853,905,000. In the precious metals Rassia comes first as to gold, with 54, 217,600; the United States second, with 30,800,000; Australia third, with 21,000,000. In silver the United States leads, 853,800,000; Mexico second, $zb,UU0,O00; Rus sia third, 20,420,000. Of the lesser metals, Germany produces most lead, 18,091,000; the Unit ed States is second, with 9,186, 000, and Spain third, with 8,580, 000. Russia is much the largest pro duces of iron and steel, the values being 275,000,000. Great Brit ain comes second with 210,000, 000; Germany is third, with 200, 000,000; the United States fourth, 160,837,500; and France fifth, $117,000,000. Germany produces 870,126,000 worth of copper and tin. Great Britain comes next with 28,275,100; Austria-Hun-gary third, 15,550,000, and Chili fourth, 15,000,000. CLIPPED AND CONDENSED. St. Louis consumes 2,000 tubs of ooleomargarine every month. Barnum has had five fires with his show and lost more than 1, 500,000. Double-deck omnibuses are now running on Fifth avenue, New York. St. Paul expended 11,543,314 in buildings during 1887. One hundred thousand people on an average cross the big Brook lyn bridge every day. The Philadelphia press is wag ing war on the gambling dens of that city to drive out poker. Newspapers instead of text books are now in use in the read ing classes at the Deadham, Mass., schools. A German tourist has encircled the globe at a cost of 5 a day, and the voyage took 185 days. A solid lump of coal containing 87 cubic feet and weighing 6,351 pounds, was exhibited at the Texas state fair. Berlin has a technical high school, built by the city at a cost of $4,S00,O0O, and maintained at an annual cost of 190,000. Chicago leads the list in rapid growth. The municipality of Hyde ira.rU. came into the corpor ate limits with 70,000 people at a single whoop. The St. Louis Globc-Democmt says that congressman McDonald of Minnesota, will probably be the prize idiot of the fiftieth congress. People are practical. The French selected "a first-class civil engin eer" for president while the Unit ed States called in an experienced sheriff. A young man went tea masquer ade in an eastern city in the full dress of a penitentiary convict. Policemen noticing the peculiar garb arrested and locked him up. The Chinese government has en gaged a young San Frasisco wo man to organize a school Qt dome tic service, at Tokio to familur ize Japanese gills with our ciib toms. It will cost Philadelphia next year eleven and a half million dol lars to be governed by the consti tution, about one hundred thou sand dollars of which is for an in cre?se of salaries of officials. The Atlanta Constitution says it received 3,047 from both sides in the wet and dry fight in that town, and its proprietors contrib uted more that amount to the two campaign funds. Nearly 8500,000 in deposits is lying unclaimed in the savings banks of Boston. It belongs to 367 unknown depositors, not one of whom has put in an appearance for more than twenty years. One of the most striking exhibi tions of confidence in human na ture is the sign displayed at a Brooklyn theater that umbrellas are loaned to patrons of the house on nights when rainstorms begin during the performance.
