During the year now ending 536 miles of railroad were built in Nebraska. Montevideo, with a population of 125,000 souls, has twenty-three daily newspapers. It costs the government $2,000, 000,000 a year to carry on the war of 1812, even at this late date. In Rhode Island minor orphans are sentenced to the reform school until they attain their majority. Nine cables connect Europe and America. Altogether there are now in use 113,000 nautical miles of cable. New York and Brooklyn doctors now prescribe walks on the East river bridge for dyspepsia or lack of appetite. There are fifty varieties of cheese imported to this country from Europe. Many of them have imitations made in New Jerse. Hare hunting is becoming a JO O t popular recreation with ladies m North Carolina. They sometimes spend whole days in the fields. Thirty million people crossed tho Brooklyn bridge the past year, There were no accidents. The re ceipts from tolls were nearly $900, 000. A coal field, 200 miles long, is said to have been traced in Mon tana, reaching from the Big Horn mountains, in Custer county to the British line. An official return shows that there are upward of thirty thou sand tenement houses in New York city. There are probably 10,000 more in Brooklyn. The coloring power of gold is so great that one part of gold will give a full, rich body of color to from six hundred to one thousand parts of glass. Diamond scales arc now being brought to such a state of perfec tion that we will soon be able to detect flaws in like stones by the minute variation in weight. The Pennsylvania railroad is un able to transport some large plates of glass made in Pittsburg, be cause the tunnels along the the road are not large enough in admit the passage of the ghibs. Montana this year paid out al most sixty thousand dollars in bounties on wild and other ani mals, including 700,94"2 squirrels, 1G5,27G prairie dogs, 2,507 coyotes, 1,581 wolves,. 294 bears and KJ4 lions. Mormons are emigrating to Brit ish Columbia. New York, is the daily prom enade of a set of triplets, all girls, who are escorted by two nurses. The children are five years old, and alike as peas, and always beautifully dressed. A solid lump oi coal, containing eighty-seven cubic feet and weigh ing 6,351 pounds, was exhibited at the Texas state fair recently held at Dallas. It was the largest block of coal ever taken from a mine in the United States. A 5-inch nine rnns entirely across Manhattan island at Sixty- hfth street and under the Hudson and East rivers, and is used by the Standard Oil company as a pipe-line between its works at Weehauken, N. The duke of Newcastle will winter in Florida and pay a flying visit to Philadelphia. He is young, unmarried and has a cork leg. The snow blockade on the switch back at the Cascades continues. The Northern Pacific is working hard to clear the way. Marshal MacMahon, who was president of the French republic from 1873 to 1879, when he re signed, is enjoying excellent health in his eightieth year. Mine. Candelaria 'of San Anto nio, Texas, is living in extreme poverty at the age of one hundred. She is the sole adult survivor of the famous Alamo massacre. Mr. Cleveland will find it diffi cult to explain the fact which Phil adelphia manufacturers are calling attention to, that a reduction of 10 to 15 per cent, in the duty on knit goods, while by doubling the im ports it closed many mills in this country, yet doubled tho revenue also.
