Investigations by Edward Atkin son, for tho purpose of determining whether the prevailing impression that the stature and physical standard of Americans was deteriorating, has resulted in the collection of some in teresting facts. Deeming the data de rived from tho measurements of sol diers and other investigations of less importance, to be unreliable for a fair average, lie requesieu lmurumuuu from manufacturing clothiers in dif ferent sections of the country regard ing their standards of average meas urements. Some of the information obtained follews: In any given thousand garments, the average of all the returns is as follows; Chest measure, 35 inches; waist, 333 inches; length of leg in side, 32 Y? inches; average height ranging from 5 feet 8) to 5 feet 9 in New England up to 5 feet 10 for the average at the south and west A few deductions of weight arc given, from which one can infer that the average man weighs between 153 and 160 pounds. These measures cover the average of the assorted sizes of g irments which arc made up by tho thousand. There are a few small men who buy "youths' sizes," so called, and a few larger who buy "extra sizes." The Chicago correspondent states that "so far as relates to the assertion that the race in this country deterior ates, our experience teaches us that the contrary is the case. "We are now, and have for several years past been, obliged to adopt a larger scale of sizes and many more extra sizes in width, as well as length, than were re quired ten years ago. I find that oc cuption and residence have a great deal to do with difference in sizes, the average of sizes required for the cities and larger towns being much less than that required for the coun try. Again, different sections vary very much in these requirements. For instance, an experienced stock clerk will pick out for south and southwestern trade coals and vests, breast measure 33 to 40, pants always one or two sizes smaller around the belly than the length of the leg in side; for western and northern trade, coats and vests, breast measure 37 to 42, pants 43 to 40 around tho belly, 30 to 3-1 length of leg inside." His correspondent in Detroit says: "We notice marked peculiarities in regions where dwell people of one na tionality. The Germans need largo waists and short legs; the French, small waists and legs; the Yankees, small waists and long legs; the Jews, medium waists and short legs. "We have found a decided demand for larger sizes than we formerly used." The Texas correspondent gives the average 3S inches chest, 33 to 34 inches waist, 32 leg measure, 5 feet 10 inches height, adding: "We find that the waist measure has increased from an average of 32 to 33 inches during the past five years, and we think our people are decoming stouter built" His Baltimore correspondent had previously made the statement, to-"wit: "Since the late war we have noticed that the average sized suit for our southern trade has increased fully one inch around the chest and waist, while there has been no apparent change in the length of pants." lie asked this firm if the change could be due to the fact that tho colored people had be come buyers of ready-made clothing. They replied that the fact that tho ne groes were buying more ready-made clothing now than previous to The war, accounts in only a small degree for the increase of the size, but it is due almost entirely to the increased phys ical activity on the part of the whites. The experience of this firm covers thirty-five years. His correspondent in New York states that "for the last thirty years our clothing, numbering at least 750, 000 garments yearly, has been exclu sively sold in the southern states. We find the average man to measure 37 inches around the chest, 32 to 33 around the waist, 33 to 34 inches length of leg inside, average height 5 feet 10 inches. The southerner measures more in the leg than around tho waist a peculiarity in direct con trast to the western man, who meas ures more around the waist than in the leg." The peculiar construction of the clothing worn by women, and tho prevalent use of those artificial ad juncts which make the appearance of the female form so often deceptive, render it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain any reliable information simi lar to that given respecting men. He says from what he knows of the business o the clothiers to whom he made application, he should infer that the figures he had obtained would cover more tan one million garments; and there is no better method of com ing at a rough-and-ready conclusion regarding tho sizo of men than the one which ho adopted. It will be ob sered that tho American man is de cidedly gaining in sizo and woight, and there is probably no doubt that tho im provement in tho quantity and quality of food enjoyed by tho inhabitants of tho United States has much to do with this increase. Millions of tons of Swedish mag netic oro beyond tho arctic circlo are being mined. It gives 70 por cent of motal. Tho owners of these deposits are inundated with orders. English iron makers are alarmed at the report that a New York syndi- cateis about closing a contract for the control of all tho iron deposits of the dominion of Canada. A lakge depositor asbestos, 5,000 yards square and twenty-threo feet deep, has just been uncovered in Que bec The veins ran from one-half to one and a half inches. The manufacture of brass goods in this country has become a great and flourishing industry, Three new works have recently started up in New Eng land. American silk manufacturers have learned from Italy and Japan that silk values have materially improved, and they expect a similar reaction here. Tnn great trouble to obtain skilled labor at a large cotton factor' in Sa vannah has made it a losing venture, and tho owner -wants to sell. II race Up.
