Leathers' boat shop, overArndt&Ferchen's; foot of Lafayette street, San Francisco, Sept. 16. The Alia to-day has this in its editorial celumns: "The completion of the California & Oregon line will mark the commencement of a now epoch in the commercial history of San Francisco. Rapid communi cation with Portland, when taken advantage of by our merchants as it undoubtedly will be, will afford us opportunity to reconquer some of the territory in Oregon, Wash ington territory, and Idaho, which has been partially wrested from us by the large cities of the east, through the opening of the North ern Pacific railroad. From this point of view it is difficult to over estimate the importance to San Francisco of the approaching completion of the great railroad enterprise. Now what are our merchants and our people going to do about it? Are they going to allow the occasion to slip by unnoticed and unhonored, or are they going to take steps to fitting ly celebrate the completion of this new link in the chain of communication which unites us with surrounding states and ter ritories? The Alia would like to see the business men of San Fran cisco take hold of this matter and make the opening of the through line the occasion a great public demonstration which would be re membered for many years to come. The chamber of commerce might take the initiative and call a meet ing to concert measures for the purpose.'' AStand Off. New York, Sept. 10. The election of directors of the North ern Pacific railroad company was a bloodless victor for both cides in the threatened contest. The present management was success ful because the control was not wrested from it, and the opposi tion was satisfied because it had obtained a large representation in the board. A compromise ticket was selected without dissent. The vote was the largest in the com pany's histor'. A correspondence between Villard and C. B. Wright, of Philadelphia, just published in dicates that peace between the Union and Northern Pacific roads is to be maintained by joint lease of the Oregon Railway & Naviga tion company's lines. Villard's Appearance. New York, Sept. 16. After the election of the Northern Pa cific directors yesterday Villard took the opportunity to shake hands with the other directors. He looked a trifle more gray and aged than when, in the full sense of his power, lie drove the last spike on the Northern Pacific. But his financial downfall has left no lines on his face. He stood erect, and looked as little careworn as any young man in the room. He had made his mil lions, lost them all, and recovered them again in less time than most men would win their thousands, and every financier in the room at the election paid him deference. Buffalo Bill was never a mem ber of the Nebraska legislature. He ran for the office once and was believed elected, but the rival can didate contested the election and won before Ruffalo Bill could take his seat. BOOTS & SHOES P.J.GOODMAN.
