P 3 ISftc gntUj gtftariat. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY -MAY 21. 1887 SHOULD BE CONTEMNED. Nearly six months are yet to elapse before the people of this state are to vote on the question of putting a prohibition amend ment to the constitution, and it is with regret we notice that several of our partially esteemed contem poraries are getting red in the face and hot in the collar regarding that question. There is one thing that deserves scoring from every decent paper in the state. It is the tacit assumption by some of the state press that newspaper "opin ion" is for sale. Already it is openly charged in the newspapers that two papers in this state have been "bought" by the anti prohi bitionists, and one by the prohi bitionists. Gentlemen of both sides, bo decent: "Be aisy, and if you can't be aisy, be as aisy as you can." Be fair; be willing to concede to others the same sin cerity, the same consistency you claim for yourselves. At best the press of this state is not held in the highest regard. Don't throw yourselves on the counter like a job lot of remnants and give op portunity to make appear truthful the sneers and slurs of those who show by their sneers and slurs what they would xio if they had the chance. If there is any one thing more contemptible in news paperdom than another it is to see in the columns of one news paper the statement that the col umns of another newspaper have been "sold" during a political campaign for so much or so little. If that isn't prostitution it is nothing, and the only thing that would keep an alleged newspaper man who would do such a thing from being a prosti tute, would be his sex. To charge as it has been charged that the Oregonian has been "bought" by the anti-prohibitionists, or that the 2sTews has been "bought" by the prohibitionists, is to say something that is improba ble on the face of it, most unlikely in fact, and even if it were so, is to proclaim what for the honor of journalism should be left unsaid. The press is supposed to hold the mirror up to nature; it is sup posed to be a glass in which is reflected the form and impress of the times. Has the press of Or egon fallen so low; are the men who by courtesy are supposed to mould public opinion, such a craven crew that they must fall to calling each other thieves and strumpets on the very threshold of discussion of a moral and eco nomic discussion? Js there nothing in the nature of the question itself to arouse dis cussion, and must the entrance be smeared with smut! Let men in and out of newspaper offices have the courage of their convictions; if they think prohibition is a good thing let it be said, decently, ear nestly; honestly; if it be deemed not a good thing let that be said equally decently, earnestly, hon estly; but for the sake of common manhood, TnE Astoriax suggests that this low assumption that gold is supreme in Oregon be frowned upon by every honest writer on the daily or weekly press of the state. O'Bbien seems to be success ful in creating considerable ex citement in 'Canada. Whether his course will be of tangible value to the cause of Ireland, is not vet apparent. It is not well to either run to a fight or from it, and there are many who think Parnell's course preferable to .-that of the editor of United Ireland. A young Brooklyn boy has been recently sentenced to six months in the" penitentiary for having thrown a cat at his mother. i A sheet of tin. the first ever ' produced in the United States, was manufactured near Youngstown, Ohio, last week. i Queen Victoria is 68years old to-day. TO CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY. A call was circulated yesterday af ternoon and numerously signed, for a meeting at the court house to-morrow evening at eight o'olock, to dis cuss ways and means for properly celebrating the coming anniversary of National Independence. The move is a fitting one; it may be said to be a necessity, and to-morrow evening's meeting should be attended by everyone in Astoria that can ap preciate our system of government. "We have had so much of froth and nothingness; so much of strife and trouble; so much of empty disput ings, that it is as it were a necessity to have due celebration of the great est anniversary in American history. Especially is this a "necessity," when sne rising jjenerauuu ia laneu mw consideration. Wo who are 20 or 30 years, or 40 or 70 years of age have an idea of the matter, and so, probably, have a good many that are younger, but unless the Fourth of July is celebrated oc casionally, the children will some day wonder what the flag is for, and for get that the nation ever had a birthday worth commemorating. So it is eminently fit and proper that Astoria celebrate the coming 4th of July in "an old-fashioned cele bration," as a patriotic mend sug gests, and to-morrow evening's meet ing can be taken as an index of the amount of patriotic feeling in Astoria for the American nag and-the grand principles it symbolizes and repre sents. Ml Sad Death of Martin Welch. Martin Welch, a well knon boat builder on the Columbia river, met his death last Saturday at Cathlamet, under melancholy cicurmstances. He had been in Portland the early part of the week, where, it is re ported, he had 'been drinking to ex cess. He returned to Cathlamet last Thursday and in the afternoon of that day took a dose of opinm, with the in ent, it is said, of quieting his nerves, so that he could go' to work again. The opium proved fatal in its effect, he expiring last Saturday. The body was brought down on the - mail boat yesterday afternoon. In the absence of F. M. Warren, for whom he had been working, Coroner Ross was last night unable to say when the funeral would take place. Deceased was in the 36th year of his age and was well known in Asto ria and vicinity. Famous Women. Madame Trebelli, the greatest of living contraltos who has traveled extensively, in faot visited every county and city of note in the world, has just departed from the slope of the Pacific, and often expressing the greatest admiration for the beauty and grandeur of our scenery and the delightful mildness of our climate, leff the following written note as a living expression of her opinion in the hands of a Portland' druggist, the original of which can be seen on de mand. Pobtind, Or., April 6, 1837. Dear Mr. Wisdem: I bavo tried your "Bobertine," and it gives me much pleasure to say that it is excellent for the complexion, being one of the best artioles of the kind I have ever used. Fire and Water, devoted lo fire protection, water supply, etc, in citie3, relates a singular accident which came near being serious. In a dyeing establishment a man was cleaning a flannel .gown in a tub of benzine, fully 100 feet removed from flamex)f any kind. He was simply rubbing the garment with his bare hands, when, as he describes it, "sud denly the whole tubfulof stuff went up in a blaze," and he escaped death or serious injury only by an instinotive and instantaneous backward leap. The friction caused by handling the flannel generated electricity, which ignited the vapors arising from the benzine. The Verdict Un&nliueus . W.D. Suit, Druggist BIppus.and., testifies: "I can recommend Electric Bitters as the very best remedy. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing." Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellvllfe, umo. amrms: "ineoest selling medi cine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou sands of others have added their testi mony, so that thejverdlct is unanimous that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of the Liver, Kidneys or. Blood. Only a half dollar a bottle at W. E.
