Compiled From Bancroft's "Pacific States." j In the earlier days of fur trad ing the " American fraders in Oce gon were more revered by the natives than were the British, but a change eventually came over the spirit of their dreams; since which exactly the opposite has been the feeling of the Indians generally throughout the northwest. Scarcely a fortnight elapsed Af ter the delivery of the fortress of Astoria to the Northwest Com pany, when one day Concomly, chief of the Chinooks, and father-in-law of McDougall, the chief trader of the American company, came in breathless haste to the latter, with tidings of a sail seen off the cape, which he was fearful might be a King George ship. "Have we not enough of these people, among us?" he exclaimed. "Are you Boston women that you permit these starving ones to take your fort, your goods, and drive you from rlio country? And now here comes this vessel to enslave us all, but with eight hundred war riors at my back I do not fear them. I will protect you." But McDou gall soothed his hotly perspiring and red-painted father-in-law, assured him that the king George men were no longer ene mies, and sent him away happy in the possession of a new coat and a pocket full of tobacco, with in structions not to molest white peo ple who were all brothers. This was the 29th of November, 1813. Next morning the vessel, which was no other than the Brit ish sloop of war Raccoon, Black, commander, mounting 26 guns, came dashing gayly forward, and anchored in Baker's bay. She was immediately boarded by Mc Dougall and his royal father-in-law, each with his retinue; and it was pleasing to see the effect of civilization thus far upon the king of the Chinooks; for from a blood thirsty warriop we find him sud denly transformed into a crafty courtier. "Ah," he cried to C.ip tain Black, spreading a fine sea otter skin upon the deck, "the Bostons are brave, but the' have no ships like this, no men like these," his eyes running admir ingly from the brightly polished guns to the gilt-buttoned officer, and along the line of niaxu.c-. Next day saw Concomly approach the little wharf before the fort from the JRaccoon, flying the Un ion Jack at the bow of his cinoe," and step ashore in full British uni form. Upon such trifles the lfs tinies of nations often turn. A Valuable Substance. Three small boxes arrived on the steamer Zealandia Sunday, from Auckland, which, although seemingly of verv little impor tance, the packages weighing some 300 pounds, formed the most valu able portion of the big vessel's cargo. They contain ambergris, an article which has been a scaioe commodity since its uses first be came known. Deriving its name from the Frence ambre tris, or gray amber, .ambergris is a solid, unctuous substance of a grayish color, having streaks of white and black in its formation. The arti cle is found in the intestines of the variety of the whale kilpwn as the sperm. K Previous to the complete analy sis of ambergris by a Dr. Swediaur, in England, the origin of amber gris was extremely hypothetical. The doctor found that the sub stance contained the horny beaks of the squid or cuttle fish, upon which the sperm whale feed, and the conclusion arrived at was that the digestive organs of the big fish were not powerful enough to reduce the horny substance. In many cases whales having this se cretion in their intestines have been found dead, or when killed, to be in a very wasted jor sickly condition. When taken from the whale, ambergris is of a soft consistency and has a disagreeable smell, but after a short exposure to the air it hardens and assumes a sweet, earthy odor. The present value of ambergris ranges from 6 to S10 an ounce, and its uses are confined to the manufacture of perfumes. It is requisite to dissolve ambergris in hot alcohol before it can be util ized, and this process produces a tUDStance termea amprem, matter allied to biliary concret;ons fojnd in various mammals. On the west coast of New Zea land, the natives go along the beach after heavy gales and search for ambergris, and boating parties are also organized to look for this valuable substance as it floats-on the sea -after being evacuated by the whales. The present lot bought by the Zelandia was prob ably the catch of one of the New Bedford whaling ships cruising around the coast of New Zealand, as the packages are consigned to eastern firms. The value of the present importation, which is duty free, will amount to about 30,00(5. In the year ending June 00, 1886, there was only 260 pounds of this article brought into the United States and valued at 15,650. Since that period 200 pounds were reported as having been obtained by two Providence, E. I., schoon ers from one whale, and the pres ent shipment is about the largest known to have entered the market for many years past. S. 1 Chron icle, 17. Restored to the Public Domain. Washington, May 21. Land commissioner Sparks to-day, in speaking of secretaiy Lamar's pur pose to revoke orders of with drawal of.railroad indemnity lands made by his predecessors from time to time since 1850, expressed the opinion that the revocation will result in 25,000,000 acres of land being thrown open to settle ment and entry. The. railroads which it is said will be most affect ed, and the states, territories and localities in which .are., located much the larger portion of the lands to be restored, are given in the order of the interests involved as follews: Northern Pacific rail way in Montana, t Dakota, Wash ington territory,' Idaho and Ore" gon; Atlantic. & Pacific, in New Mexico west of the Rio Grande, and Arizona; the Southern Pacific, in southern California; 'the Cali fornia & Oregon, from- Roseville Junction, near Sacramento, in Cal ifornia, to the Oregon line; the Oregon & California, from Port land to the California line. THE - NATIONAL DISEA9K DOWNED. Hundreds of so-called diseases under various names are the result of indigestion, and when this one trouble is removed the others vanish. The best known remedy for indiges tion, according to thousands of testi monials, is one that Iws been used in the United States for more than fifty years Braxdheth's Pills. These Pills will cure .the worst form of indigestion or dyspepsia, and by their use the national disease is easily conquered. Think twice before you speak once is a good enough rule for some, but there are persons who can think of so much meaner things to say on second thought that we prefer to hear their first inspiration on the subject.
