,-jf -s53s ; .- -gprw. W fo gaitj IMioratt. ASTORIA. OREGON: FBIDA.Y. .APKIL.22, 1887 The interstate law is forcing Minneapolis millers to ship their flour down the Mississippi. The Walla Walla Union never quarrels with a contemporary. Once in a wtvle, though, it touches one on the raw with a squib just to hear it howl and see it squirm. Wichita, Kansas, has a popula tion of 10,000 people, and the tuneful lyre who runs the Wichita Eagle, says there are "70 wide open drug stores" in that prohibi tion town. There ought to be a way in which the jurisdiction of the inter state commerce commission could be extended to the Isthmus of Panama. On that short road the fare from one end to the other is $5 to natives and 25 to strangers, i Op the thirty-seven oleomar garine lactones in xms uuuuujr, eleven are in Chicago, and none is found east of- that city by the internal revenue officers. In Feb ruary 2,615,779 pounds were made, taxed and removed for sale, and only 38,100 pounds were ex ported. What would become of those factories if an attempt should be made to sell ever? nound of this great product to consumers for what it really is? Says the Oregenian: "The spirit of activity in affairs, whose popular name is enterprise, founded on energy, supported by judgment and pushed with the comprehension and vigor that make all available opportunities contribute to its purpose, is the chief thing that carries -one city to higher success than another. These things are not accidental nor adventitious." Tho force of the above "lies in its local application. this is mere talk, this shouting ourself hoarse, this gas-boom that every little village is kicking about its grass grown streets and rub bish rotten alleys, is half ludicrous, half pitiable. Unnecessary Misery. - Probably as much misery comes from habitual constipation as from any derangement of the functions of the body, and it is difficult to cure, for the reason that no one likes to take the medicines usually pre scribed. Canada is called a British col ony, but the British population is cut in two by a solid mass of French, which is extending its borders, and at the same time growing more intensely French and more aggressive, while old France begins to stretch out her arms once more to her daughter. Talking of "booms,". the Mast Oregonian says: "This paper, for example, could possibly .borrow enough money to erect a twenty thousand dollar m building, put in ten thousand dollars worth of ma chinery, and branch out -with a daily, on a scale costing two or three thousand a month. "We wish it could see its way clear to pur sue such a couTse But if we should, the concern would be bankrupt within a twelve-month, and we'd have to go out of busi ness or crawl in behiud and below somebody else who had kept a level head. So it is with any business. And as it is with business so it had ought to be with values of town property and rents. The more reasonable the prices set up on town lots and houses Jor rent, the more sure, steady and substan tial will be our growth. What has happenel to other towns may or may not bo applicable to us; in most cases not altogether applicable, .because of a dissimilarity of circum stances. St. Paul and Minneap olis practically one city and Denver, for example, have been made what they 'are because na ture could furnish no other cities in their respective vicinities to rival them. The "boom" came to them because nature and com merce tent it, and that is all the "boom" that ever was or ever will be worth the breath it takes to Wow up a bladder.
