Washington, Jan. 8. The sig nal corps at Cape Henry, Virginia, reports that the German ship Jttliz abeth, of Bremen, went ashore at 2 a. m. to-day, fourteen miles south of Port Henry. The crew were lost; also the captain and two of the men of the Little Island life-saving station and two men of the Dam Neck, Virginia, life-saving crew, who drowned while at tempting to rescue the ship's crew. A DETAILED ACCOUNT. Norfolk, Jan. 8. One of the most disastrous shipwrecks which ever occurred on the Virginia coast happened at 2 o'clock this morniug near Little Island life- saving station, fourteen miles south of Cape Henry. Not less than twenty and possibly more lives were lost, among them five life-saving men, who, in the dis charge of their duty, were drowned. The morninir was bit terly cold and a blowing snow storm prevailed with the wind blowing hard from the northwest. During a lull in the storm a life saving patrol from the Little Isl and life-saving station sighted a large ship btranded on the bar about 900 yards from shore. When he saw the vessel he was going to meet the patrol from Dam Neck station and exchange checks, showing that both patrols had been to the end of their beat. The Dam Neck patrol was only a few yards distant when the vessel was sighted, and both fired rock ets to notify the crew of the stranded ship that she had been seen. They hurried back to their respective stations and gave the alarm. In a little while the crew with the life boats and apparatus were abreast of the wreck, and the boom of a mortar announced that a line had been shot out to the ill-fated vessel. This was un successful and a second was fired with a like result. After firing: six unsuccessful shots the life-sav ing men determined to brave the furious sea and the death which seemed certain to await their ven ture. The word of command being given by Captain Blanza, of 1 IV saving station No. 4, known :: Little Island, some of the muit expert boatmen manned each boat. At this command the men gave way with a will and in a moment both boats were breasting the fu rious waves. They reached the ship in safety, and four of the ship's crew were taken in the life boat and ten in the ship's toat, which were launched for the purpose. The boats were headed for the shore, and not a word was spoken, for each man realized the awful peril which surrounded them. With steady pull the two boats were making good headway for the shore, when a wave of great power struck the boats, capsizing them instantly and pitching out their twenty-two occupants. Then be gan a desperate struggle for life, and with many of the men it was a prolonged one. The horrified life savers on the beach were pow erless to assist their drowning com rades or the unfortunate strangers. The drowning men were carried southward by the sea, and some of them were washed ashore. As they came within reach they were picked up and endeavors made to revive them, and in two instances with success, although one of the two is badl3' injured. The vessel is the German ship Elizabeth, Captain Halnordst, from Hamburg to Baltimore, and not one of her crew survive her wreck. Her cargo is unknown, as the high seas have thus far pre vented any attempt to reach her. It is thought she is leaking badly, and at sunset her mast was thought to be giving away. Of the life saving crew were lost Abel Blan za, captain of No. 4, known as Little Island; J. W. Land, of the same station; Giorge W. Stone, samp; J. W. Blanza, of Dam Neck station, and a brother of Abel; Joseph Sprattley, i Dam Neck. John Featheridge and Frank Tel ford, of No. 4 station, were washed ashore and resuscitated, butFeath idge 13 so badly injured that it is thought he omnot survive.
