m She gaits gMtorau- ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY. FEBRIARY 1.1880 In the rich quarters of Paris the births are 11 per 1,000; in the poor quarters, 40. This explains vhy the population of France on ly doubles itself in 1G5 years. A journal has been started in Chicago, entitled The Hog. It is devoted to swine. It will doubt less refrain from casting too many pearls before its constituency. The Richard Hush which sailed from San Francisco Jan. 2nd for a cruise among the Aleutian islands in search of the missing whaler Amethyst, has returned after an unsuccessful search. "Lucky" Baldwin, the Califor nia millionaire, was taught a good lesson by a California jury last Friday which awarded Miss Per kins 73,000 damages from con tact with the aged roue. It is reported from Seattle that a general strike exists among the coal mines in that region. It is thought that all the mines will shut down, thus throwing 1,000 men out of employment. A correspondent (?) in Fri day's Oregonian asks this paper some questions. The questions seem to have been intended to demonstrate the silliness of their authort and if so they certainly served their purpose. The disarmament of the- Indians after the Kiel rebellion is said to have been a farce, the redskins hiding and retaining all their good guns. They lack ponies, however, and the settlers anticipate an era of horse stealing when spring comes. The Boston Jieacon, a religious journal, comes forward with the comforting assurance that the ex pression, "a hell of a time," is not profane. The word "hell," it ex plains, is a survival of an old Ger man word, which meant first, ringing, loud, noisy; second, visi ble, evident, manifest. A bee Ijeeper has discovered that after being stung by bees a certain number of times he ceased feeling any effects from stings. Those who have received a suc cession of verbal and written stings usually become equally free from pain, a wise provision of nature in the mental as well as the physical organization. In Mexico the morning news papers are sold in the streets the evening before, for they go to press about five o'clock in the afternoon. The Sunday morning papers are sold Saturday night, and there are none ready for Mon day, so that in Mexico there is no Sunday newspaper work done, and no Sunday newspaper; but just where the moral advantage comes in, even a long sojourn in Mexico fails to make plain. Representative Morrow, of California is working to secure a ruling by the treasury department that will prevent the coming of Chinese to this country in transit. Last year 11,000 Chinese came to the United States in transit, and they were lost sight of as soon as they arrived in the country. This attempted evasion of the law Mr. Morrow hopes to put an end to, and, as the treasury department was willing to rectify its error in permitting consular officers to issue certificates to Chinamen, it is believed it will be qeually willing to prohibit transit frauds. Ik the senate, on the 19th, Sen ator Mitchell introduced a bill -which has for its object recognition of the rights of those settlers who purchased lands from the North ern PaciBc railroad company with in what was known as the limits of the terminal location of that- road at Wallula. Title to this body of land is affected by the re oent ruling of Land Commissioner Sparks, which changes the termin al location, and in effect decides that thee land were originally erroneously included within the limits of the Northern Pacific grant. Ihe bill proposes to per mit these settlers who are living on these lands, to perfect their ti tle by purchasing from the gov ernment, at the rat& of $1.25 per acre, the amount of land they had contracted for with the railroad company. This is from Civil Service Com missioner Edgerten: "When I was in congress in 1852, I repre sented thirteen of the northwest counties of Ohio. I came in at a time when there was a change of party and my party had the presi dency. Before I started for Washington I resolved that no constituent of mine should have an office if I could help it, and none of them got into the government through me. Positions under the government have a bad effect upon the men who accept them, and the government service is not a sphere which I would invite any young friend of mine to enter. If he is a bright fellow he can make as much any where else, and if he is not bright the govern ment doesn't want him." HARRIED. In Astoria, Feby. 20tli, 188o by Iiev. J. McCorraac, L. Anderson to Lija Ma tilda Wirkkala. In Astoria, Feb'. 20tli, 18SG, by Rev. J. McCormac, John Sanderson lo Marija Sereflia. NEW TO-DAY. Notice.
