IMUlfiflRATfiB PJW iaJIBFt I ftlifi THE WOMAN WHO DABES. "What Woman Can Do If She Pea senses Moral Coarage. Yes, people dislike her, and call her unwomanly, and -warn their friends against her as if she were a moral contagion. But she is one of the facts that cannot be blotted out, for all that. She does not create the wonder ment, ridicule and sarcasm that she used to, years ago ; she has left all that for" the followers of fashion. She is like other developments of tills progressive world people have become accustomed to her. Stale eggs have increased in value till they are regarded as too good a luxury to treat her to, as were her prototypes of twenty-five years ago. She has come to stay; and the simpler and less daring of her own sex, and the autocrats of the other, might as well make room for her in the field of life, for she will have it anyway. The woman who dares, finds there is plenty of work for her. She knows that public opinion will not feed her when she is hungry, nor shelter and clothe her when she is cold. Public opinion has taken the courage out of many a woman who feared its lash of scornful tongues. The woman who dares, had just as soon raise garden vegetables, poultry, and fruits, as to raise canary-birds, sickty pot-plants, and saucy children; while the former are all useful and marketable. The woman who dared, was found studying law and medicine long be fore she was permitted to practice either. She spoke in public, when it was at the cost of her reputation to do so. Now, she cashes checks and drafts behind the counter of banks and mercantile houses. She lectures from rostrums and pulpits. There are no heights which the woman who dares, will not climb even the Egyptian obelisk has not been ex empt. She is found editing papers and magazines at a salary of from fifteen hundred to six thousand dollars per year. And tho little, narrow-minded, petrified-souled man who cannot make one-third of that amount from his hundred-acre farm and stock, and life-long servant, pompously says: "Strong-minded women don't amount to much." Who does not pity the wives of such men; and there are thousands of them who only dare to exist. Harriet Beecher Stowe dared at tack a question which the clergy dare not touch though shielded by sacerdotal vestments and the privi leges of their calling. There are women who dare be something more than students of fashion magazines and unpaid drud ges. They reason in this wise: "If it is respectable to be a saleswoman in a store, it is certainly more profit able to be proprietor of the same, and it is just as proper to sell goods for a salary, as to sell cake and ire-cream behind a counter to buy a new carpet or china tea-set for the minister's wife. And it is just as honorable, if not more so, to go about selling books and household conveniences, as to importune peo ple for contributions and articles for a church fair." The woman who dares, is just as much of a lady, whether she makes arrangements with a buver to take fifty dozen eggs from her poultry house, as to order one or two dozen of him for household use. It is the independent spirits who face the world and say: "There's a place for me, and 1 am going to find it. Rights are for those who know how to maintain them." They are the women who are not intimidated by what somebody says or thinks. They are true to their convictions. They stand firmly by what they deem to be right. They make loyal martyrs and noble hero ines. As Samantha says: They have " hefty principles." " Different conditions tend to de velop the women who dare. Some are born with a superabundance of moral courage, and are always en tertaining opinions that require de fending, while others have to expe rience a certain amount of injustice and oppression to quicken and arouse their latent energies. Many make unkind remarks about the woman who dares, without knowing how much they are indebted to her, or realizing how they are following her leadership every day. They see her try an experiment, and if it is a success, how quick all are to take advantage of its results. After she has learned watch-making, how appropriate the jewelry shop seems for a woman's deft fingers and nicety of touch. After she has demonstrated her capability for supervising various kinds of business, who thinks her masculine or out of place, if she bends her energy in a business di rection. Who can hesitate to admire the journalistic ability of Mrs. Frank Leslie, with her thirteen or more publications. Every avenue is open to the woman who dares to venture therein. No law restrains her, and public opinion surely ought not to. She is debarred from nothing but the ballot-box, and she will gain that right long before the masses can be per suaded that they need its protection. They will have to learn to appreciate the woman who dares, before they will be capable of following to the heights she has in view.- E. R. Clarke,- in American Bqral Home. Qeerge lTm. Cartis' BesiaalBg. I was reading but a day or two since of an interview between Geo'rge William Curtis and the Elder Harper. It seems that Mr. Curtis, when a struggling youth, had written with great care what seemed an interest ing book, took the manuscript to Mr. Harper, who, in a chilly tone of voice, informed him that they had recently published a work on the same subject. Curtis was about to take his manuscript and retire when Mr. Harper's eye fell upon its pecul iar neatness. Turning the pages, here and there a sentence struck him, while the heart of the young hopeful beat sturdily beneath his vest. "I will take this book," said Mr. Har-j Ser. The foot of George William nrtis was then upon the threshold. Boldly he entered the room whence in all time since his utterances have commanded respect and admiration. What a chance ! The mere dropping of a button, the simple glance of an eye along .a freshly written, legibly presented page, settled his fate. Joe Howard, in Exchange. A Passage That tacked BrllllaBcy. "Now, John," said the keeper of the cigar store at closing-up time, to his boy, " take the Indian figure from the door and lay it down be hind the counter." " Hadn't we better let it stand be hind the counter? " said John. " Why so?" asked the employer. "Because figures never lia, you know." Boston Courier.
