Kevrs-GLrl Who Envies the Boys and the FI owe r-G Iris. "No," said a little news-girl who was trying the other evening to lightenhcr load in a down-town beer saloon, "we don't make a dollar a day, or anything near it. The boys may do that, and better, but we can't. Some of the boys sleep around the newspaper offices all night to get the early morning papers. We mustn't do that, j-ott know. Then, the boys .save money, at least the big ones do, those that live in the Newsboys' Home, and work for themselves. There is no News-girls' Home, and we must go back every night to where we belong. Then our fathers or mothers, or whoever is minding us, take away all the money, and beat us if all bur papers are not sold. The next day we get just enough money to buy a new stock, and we start out again. We don't get the same chances as the boys, and they don't treat us fairly. May be we are not so quick in getting at the paper that a man wants, and while we are looking for it in the bundle a boy will jump in front of the customer with a, 'Here y'are sir!' sell the pa per, and go roaring down the street before we have found what was wuited. They're a bad lot, tho boys are. Then they can jump on the cars and off again, no matter how fast they are going, and all of 113 can't do that, though I can." The speaker was a short, swarthy faced girl, abont twelve years old. Her appearance was not very at tractive, but she Feemcd to have the instincts of a good business woman in her. She did not readily take "no" for an answer, but persistently thrust her papers under a man's nose, and was only to be driven away by harsh language, to which she did not Feem to be at all sensitive. "Ileigho!" she sighed, returning from an unsuccessful raid upon a colored man, who had called in for a glass of ale, "I wish I was a beauty. I'd get along well enough then. Not peddling newspapers, you know, but selling flowers. All the pretty news girls, sooner or later, become flower girls. I tried it once, but I suppose I wasn't pretty enough, for the'flow cra were all "withered before they were sold. But therfc was a girl with big, blue eyes, and a face like a wax doll's, who sold newspapers near me for more than a year, and always had a big bundle left when mine were all gone. Somebody told her that she was lost while peddling newspapers, and gave her a little money to buy a stock of flowers. They don't vt ither on her hands. She has been in the business a fortnight, and last night she told me that she was making $2 a day, and asked me if I would bo good enough not to speak to her it I met her at work in the daytime. Mean thing! She has forgotten how often she has come to me crying, and begged me to help her sell her papers when mine were all sold." New York Sun. Throwing the Lariat. There are a variety of lariats with a lotindup party, nearly all of which were made of the very best qualit' of hemp, twisted so extremely tight that it was almost impossible to un twist the strands. Others were made of sinew cords, and were braided veiy neatly, tho ends or lassoing parts being greased so as to slip oasily. Their lassoes were about sixty or sixtj'-five feet long, one-third of which forms the noose, and when swinging it is grasped a little above the loop, so as to prevent the same from slipping until launched through the air. The lasso is swung over tho head and left shoulder and back over the lisht shoulder, a peculiar turn of the w rist as it begins to return keep ing the loop wide open. When fly ing thtougli the air tho noose takes a slightly oval form, but remains open and" settles quietly around tho objeet aimed at. An English clergyman asked an uneducated woman whethershe liked his written or unwritten sermons the best. After thinking a few moments she said: "Why, I loikej'othc best without the book, because yo keep saying the same tlnng over ana over again, and that helps me to remem ber what I hear a good deal better." The buffaloes were all right until about seven years ago, when the In dians were conquered, which opened up the country and let the hide hunters in. It took about seven yearS, beginning with 1870, to exter minate the buffalo along the line of the Union PaciBc Ptailroad, which in the good old times could have been seen blackening the Platte River bot tom for miles. These poor silly beasts were so easily killed, and, from their abundance, offered so rich a reward to the hide hunter, that every idle fellow in that part of the country could make good wage. bntchering them. The Union Pacific Railroad split tho herds in half, rn! left a moiety to tho north and moiety to the south. Those in To- were "soon used up by gporlMii and professional hunters; but great northern herd fled to Wj. i, and Montana, where Sitting liuli his followers took charge of ats! tectcd them until Uncle SamV -diers began chasing him aroun countrv as well as the bison. 1875 to 18S0 fullv 1,000,000 of brutes were killed by Eoldiei ... other white men.
