Cheek, whose name and nature appear identical, had got away with 1100.000. In his desk was a single line "1 am a thief scoundrel, knave and liar," signed bv Cheek. FERDINAND TVABD'S PLANS. Hi Prison Life How He General Grant. Imposed en Each of the Democrats elected since the war to the office of speak er was of the same age, forty-eight years old, when Iris term of service began. This was the age of Speaker Kerr in 1870; of Speaker Randall in 187G, and of Speaker Carlisle in 1S83. Cor.. Baylor, of the United States ordnance board, says that to protect our coasts as they should be protected, ninety-six lG-inch rifle guns are needed. Each of these monsters would weigh 100 tons and would drive a 1,750 pound shot through a ;?4inch ar mor plate. There is but one thing, saj'S the Statesman, for the people of the Pacific coast to do at present with reference to the Chinese question, and that is to strengthen the hands of our representatives in congress in their efforts to make the restriction act more effective or to attain the desired end by some other form of legislation. If this fails we shall have greater reason to complain, and our wrongs will appear in proportion to our patience and firmness in meeting them. Yesterday's National Republi can gives as the result of an ex haustive inquiry concerning future divisions in the house of represen tatives regarding the unlimited suspension of silver coinage, a table showing that 143 Democrats and 52 Republicans are against suspension, and -39 Democrats and 91 Republicans favor it. A noticeable feature in connection with the matter is the division of members upon sectional lines. The west and south are practically a unit for coinage, while the east and middle states appear to be al most solid in favor of suspension. The Chicago and Northwestern has extended its lines westward Xew York, Dec.25. ,:Isee that Ward lias proved a failure as bookkeeper at Sing Sing," said $ prominent criminal lawyer to-day, uand has been put to kicking a press. I wonder when he'll et that hospital room V "wnat Hospital room? ' was asKeu. 'Why. the room that is to be fitted up for him as soon as you reporters quit coing up there. Ward told of it himself before his trial, He said to Orrin Skin ner of Chicago, one of the prisoners in the Ludlow-street jail, that it all had been arranged that ne was to be put at common work at firsts until the excite ment died out He would then be siven an easy berth in the office, and after a little while a room would be fitted for him in the hospital. These favors, he said, would cost him about 5000 a year. The programme goes all right so far, doesn't it?"' "By the way," continued the gentle man, "did you ever hear how Ward at tended General Grant's dinner party ? It was when the firm of Grant & Ward had just started in business. Fred Grant happened to memtion, in the office one day that his father was going to give a dinner party that evening, and that Vauderbilt, Cyrus W. Field and some more of the big guns would he there. sAh.5 said Mr. Ward, and nothing more was thought of it That evening Grant's door bell rang while the family and their guests were at dinner, and Ward presented himself in full dress with his crush hat under his arm. 'Could he see the General for a moment? Just for a moment' The General came into the hall, 'Ah, my dear General, 1 beg your pardon for disturbing you, Jmt I just steppea m lora moment lrom tin opera, you know, to tell you that 1 had a chance to make a little tnrn to-day, nothing to do with the firm, but just a little outside speculation and I nut you in. 1 closed it up this afternoon, and your share of the profits is S5000. I hap pened to have the check in my pocket so 1 brought it over. Here it is. Gen eral,' and Mr. Ward prepared to rush back to opera. The General was de lighted, poor, simple, old man. and swallowed the whole storv. 'Would Mr. Ward stay and dine? Ko? Then at least he must have a glass of wine be fore he went away.' Mr. Ward protest ed, but finally permitted himself to be led to the dining-room and remained until the dinner was over. That invita tion cost Ward S3000, but he considered it cheap at the price. San Francisco, Dec 24th, 1685. Street Light Contract. NOTICE is hereby given that bids will be received at the office of the Au ditor and Clerk until Thursday, Dec 31st, 1885, for the lighting of the street lights of the city of Astoria for one year beginning January Cth. 183G, with coal oil, gas or electricity. Bids must state tne price per lamp per month and must be accompanied with a guarantee in the sum of 500 signed by one or more responsible tax-payer, to the effect that If the contract be awarded to said bidder he will enter into contract, with good and sufllcent sureties in the sum of $2,000 for the faithful performance of the con tract. Contracts for lichting with oil will include furnishing oil, chimneys and within 300 miles of Ogden during wicks, and keaping the same clean and in repair. the past year, and is pushing on at an average rate of a mile a day toward that point. By increased facilities of construction it intends to connect with the Central Pacific before the end of the next six months, and there is a report now in circulation in San Francisco that an outline agreement has been made between the Southwestern and Southern Pacific companies by which the Central Pacific is either to be leased to the former road or enter into a joint traffic agreement with it when the con nection is established. There is one prominent f.w;t in connection with the failure of Sec retary Manning to call bonds, which he will find difficult to satis factorily explain to the public. Prior to the advent of Secretary McCullock, bonds were called whenever the available balance in the treasury exceeded 14.000.000. The amount named in each call was 1 0,000,000. At these periods the surplus was composed of the &ame forms which now compose it. No difficulty was then experi enced in paying these calls, and un der this system the interest bearing debt was largely reduced every year. If bonds could be redeemed without any strain upon the treasury, and without causing the slightest jar to the business interests of the country, -with a surplus of $145,000,000, why can not the same thing be done with a surplus of over $200,000,000? This is one of the conundrums Secretary Manning will be called upon to answer soon after congress reassembles, and the early call for bonds would tend very much to relieve him from the embarrass ment he will experience when he comes to answer this qnestion. The rieht to reject any and all bids is hereby reserved. Bv order of the Common Council. Attest: T.S.JKWETT, Auditor and Clerk. Astoria, December 2Gth, 1885. Teachers' Examination.
