Londok, May 25. The scuddel
ling of the British troops out of the
Soudan has had its expected effect of
reviving and immensely strengthen
ing the power of Osman Digma on the
Bed sea littoral. Tribes which had
been waverincr between allegiance to
El Mahdi and Great Britain have now
declared for the former, and with
them have gone thousands of Arabs
who had declared friendship for En
gland. Many hundreds absconded
from the British camp itself, and car
ried with them tho arms with which
they had been rashly supplied. The
British evacuated Bier Handab yes
terday, under a galling fire, and had
the mortification of recognizing some
of their own rifles in the hands of the
enemy. It is intended to form a line
of simple, easily defended fortifica
tions just outside of Suakim. It is
also deemed imperative that at least
two ironclads shall remain in the har
bor, as otherwise tho small garrison
left to defend the place would surely
Le overmatched sooner or later. The
mortality among the troops is increas
ing to an alarming extent. Beturned
correspondents assert that the spread
is duo in a great measure to Indian
troops and camp followers, who are
unconquerably opposed to tho sani
tary measures which medical officers
seek to enforce. The position of af
fairs on the Nile is less favorable to
El Mahdi. The repo"rt comes that he
has again been defeated by the rival
false prophet, and has fled up the
White Nile. Tho result will probab
ly bo anarchy throughout a large
section of the Soudan, but it is
thought that the Egyptian garrisons
at.Kassala and elsowhero will now
have a chance to escape.
Lokdok, May 25. Tho European
combination against England is the
theme of every journal in London to
day, no matter of what party. It is
impossible to say what issuo now is
uppermost in the minds of tho public,
for on every sido looms somo compli
cation, foreign or domestic, which iu
itself seems to overshadow all others.
Gladstone to-day is almost as near a
rupturo with his ''model republic" as
with his "civilizing friend" tho czar,
and the old mau is almost overcome
with despair and mortification at
8U3h treatment from his two chosen
allies. Lord Boseberry lias gone to
Berlin to see Bismarck, aud humbly
offer unconditional surrender fur
peace. The opposition to the coer
cion act by leading members of the
Irish national party is vigorous and
b tter, and it is already beginning to
bear abundant fruit. There is not
tho slightest reason for doubting that
the Parnelite3 havo already secured a
promise of aid from at least thirty
tory members of parliament, who will
oppose renewal of the coercion act.
Fifty radicals are also said t'i have
pledged themselves in the same direc
tion. and many tories will undoubted
ly aid the Irish cause by sullenly re
fusing to vote. Altogether the
prospects of the government on the
reassembling of parliament aro about
as gloomy as posiblo.
"Washington May 25. It has trans
pired that the president is especially
uesinous of cultivating the most
friendly political and commercial re
lations with the South American re
publics, and that the appointment of
Colonel Boberls as United State min
ister to Chili was made in view of his
qualifications to represent and carrv
out the policy and tho administration
in this regard.
Washington, May 25. Congress
man Scott, of Erie, asked secretary
Bayard for a small consulate for one
of his constituents.. He was told to
file his papers, when tho congressman
replied: "I filed my papers last fall
when I paid S25.000 assessment to tho
campaign fund;" saying which he

Tho Norlhern Pacific has con
tracted to haul wheat from Oregou to
Chicago at 32 cents a hundred
pounds. This is at the rate of 19

The steamer 2IuUnomah is the
second of its name that has plied in
theso waters. Tho original was built
in New York and was brought around
the Horn in pieces in 1852. She was
a barrel-shaped side-wheeled boat,
but was very slow. She ran on the
Portland-Astoria route, and was com
manded for many years by Captain
Billiard Hoyt, now deceased. The
trip was made iu about threo days
and the fare was $11. Many old
Portlanders remember seeing the old
boat start with her complement of
passengers and then take a downward
bound ship in tow, arriving at her
destination in about ten days. Of
course the passengers had to make
tho best of it in the meantime, or
else get out and walk. The Mult
nomah ceased running in 1S62, but it
is said her engines are still m the Or

Francis Volney, in the San Fran

an evicted Scotch tenant: "In the
future world to which Mackinnon
and his wife and, children were pre
maturely driven, to make room for
Mrs. Macdonald's sheep, let us hope
that tho gifts of txod aro not the pri

us hope that there the great masses
may not bo -obliged to the few fo rthe

A good joko is told on J. M. Swift.
A paity had owed him $125 for some

of money at the time. Accordingly
tho party told Swift that if he would

get the money at the National bank.
Mr. Swift consented, the note was
drawn up and signed, and tho money
paid. Now it comes about that the
party has left for parts unknown and
Mr. Swift will havo to settle the note
