There lias been a great deal of surprise expressed at the promptness of the senate in voting on the Texas Pacific forfeiture. The expectation was that no vote would be reached this session. The house has passed bills for forfeiting over 50,000,000 acres of laud, but only one o these bills, the Oregon Central, has become a law. The house started in at the beginning of the Forty-eigth congress with a determination to forfeit all the unearned lauds held by railroad cor porations. The public lands commit tee reported bills to the house for forfeiting over 100,000,000 acres. Their consideration wns pressed up on tho house, and lulls were passed last session declaring forfeiled seven small southern grants, amouuting in all to about 6,000,000 acres; the Tex as Pacific, 15,000,000; tho Oregon Central, 4,000,000; Ibe California and Oregon, 3,000,000, and the Atlantic and Pacific. 35,000,000 acres. Other forfeiture bills, which forfeit about 50,000,000 acres, are on tho house cal endar. The senate has passed the Oregon Central with an amendment reducing the forfeiture to 2,000,000, and the house acquiesced. The only other bill iho senate has passed is the Atlantic and Pacific, which they so amended that it took from tho bill its whole character, referring the matter to tho court of claims for settlement, which amendment tho houso would not agreo lo, and tho bill cannot be come a law unless the senate recedes from its position. Among the bills reported by the houso public lands committee, but not yet acted upon by the house, is the Northern Pacific, amounting to 33,000,000 acres. All the bills not receiving final action will die on the 1th of March, but they will be introduced into the next house. United States Tkeasuree Wymax is tho recipient of many curious let ters, generally relating to the dispo sition of the money contained in the treasury. A few da's ago he received a loiter from an Indiana farmer, who said that ho understood iho Demo crats intended cleaning out the treasury, but before that should conio to pass ho desired that the small sum of $6,000 should be sent to him in order that ho might buy a farm. Ho knew Mr. Wyman would be willing to oblige him with this amount, par ticularly if he fait that the Democrats could not be trusted with the treas ury and its funds. Another loiter received about the same time was from an Ohio man, who said that ho learned from different papers that $40,000,000 lay in the treasury which belonged lo various persons, but had never been claimed; He was of the opinion that some of this amount rightfully belonged to him. A good many years ago, while traveling in Kentucky, he had sont $10 in a letter to his wife, but nothing had ever been heard of either tho letter or re mittance, and he presumed the money was in the treasury. Besides, his wife's undo went lo California in 1859 and promised to leave her some mon ey. Tho uncle has since died, but nothing has been heard of the legacy, which no doubt was a part of the unclaimed S10,000,000. He desires the treasurer to look up tho matter and turn over to him what was right fully his own. The N. Y. Tribune's Albany special says: A storm is gathering about Manning's head which promises to make his appointment to a cabinet position a source of gre.it embarrass ment for Claveland's administration from the start ITofc only is tho man agement of the Albany penitentiary under investigation, but an inquiry into tho stale printing which Man ning has controlled since T'.veed first became a power has also bsea insti tuted by a oimmitteo of the inde pendent citizens' association, and in both caes it i3 sail, to-night sensa tional developments affecting Man ning may be expected. The commit tee ha3 been workiug in sbcrot and its report will not ba forthcoming for some days, but enough has leaked out to explain Manning's ovident reluotanoe to admit his intention to go into tho cabinet It :s said that un investigation of Ihe printing con tracts will establish Manning's con nection with tho Tweed ring and that tho penitentiary investigation will connect him with tho alleg2d irregu larities of tho saoeriateadent. These arc two things that may be set doira as absolute facts one hav ing occurred, and tho other to occur, j The first is that, the legislature has j adjourned, totally and finally; tlie: other is that Gov. Moody has the' constitutional power and will appoint a successor to Senator Slater. In his lecture last Monday night, in Xew York, Lieut Schwalka said the Alaska Fur Company, the great monopoly that controls that territory, will have made 500.000 per cent profit before 1890, when it gives up its char ter, while the fisheries alone arc worth SljOOO.OOO annually, and there is good grazing there for cattle, enough to feed ten San Franciscos. And so Mr. Cleveland declares against the silver dollar, and in favor of stopping its coinage. It is a grave mistake and one of far reaching ef fect It is to be regretted that tho president elect is of the apparent be lief that there is no American nation outside of "Wall street Card Scnunz is lecturing southern women on the duties of housekeep ing, and tells them that soda biscuit and pie will rnin any stomach. Pos sibly he has taken a job of advertis ing some brand of baking powder. A wager was won some days ago by a young man in Louisburg. N. Tuere is a dynamite scaro at Frank fort, Stuttgart and Mayence, owing to anarchist letters and placards cir culated broadcast threatening explo sions. TnE cut in immigrant rates to $11 from Europe to Chicago resulted in tho sale of about 2,000 prepared pas sagos at Chicago week baforc last, good for a year. President-elect Cleveland is do ing some of the beat listening of his life these few days, but he doesn't waste a great deal of his lime talk ing.
