Glover, one ot the sea otter hunters on. the ocean beach above Gray's harbor, called at the TranscripfofS.ce on "Wednesday, and gave some interesting items concern ing sea otter hunting and the habits of the animals. Mr. Glover has been in this business for several years, and has two partners engaged in hunting on the beach. They are located about fifteen miles up the beach from the mouth of Gray's harbor, and hunt from a rock .situated out in the breakers, which they reach by a canoe. While firing at an otter a few days ago, Lo, burst his rifle, and had to come here to get it repaired. The hunters, he says, use Sharp's rifle, that make proving the best of all others. The guns -weigh fifteen pounds, and carrypnehundred grains 01 powaer, -wxm ieau in prupumuu. A few years ago, the otter "were very tame, and could be killedwith almost any gun. at short range but now they are very shy, and their average shootingis a quarter of a mile. This makes the killing of the animals quite uncertain; besides they have also to oaloulatejor the forj:e of the wind, if it is blowing. The force of the wind will of tea carry a ball two feet out of line in the distance of 400 yards. They also use raised sights, and in calculating the distance may over or under shoot. No old otters which have been wounded are now seen, showing that they have become more shy as improved guns are used. The otter range extends from Gray's harbor about twenty-five miles north along the coast, and it is believed the otter never leave it There is an other range near Port Oxford, one on Vancouver island, and others further north. Harry Withorall, one of the be3t and oldest otter hunters, has gone this summer to try his luck on the west coast of Vancouver island. The otter usually weighs from seven ty to eighty pounds, and is about the size of a large mastiff It has no legs forward, however, like a dog, but ha flippers in their place. When in full season the fur is a fine snd glossy black. One wa3 killed off the beach from a canoe, by an Indian, in April, which brought one hundred dollars, and was a fine one. The price ranges from fifty to one hundred dollars each, about seventy-five dollars be ing the usual price at this time. It is seldom they are killed from a canoe now, although the Indians formally killed them in that manner. The streams emptying into Tularo lake are full of fine perch, and the farmers are packing them in large quantitios, salting them down in bar rels. Two men with hay forkB and gum boots walk out into the shoal channels, which seems literally alive with fish, and selecting the largest as they pass up, pitch them out, loading a wagon in an hour s tune.
