She is chartered by ihe Astoria and Coast transportation company, for this route oud will carry freight and passengers. Sheriff Twombloy vesterday received a dispatoh from Sheriff Geo. C. Sears, cf Portland, to secure the arrest of one Lincoln Geiger, who had been working near Seaside, on Clatsop plains, as ho had a warrant for him. Twombley found Geiger in the city and promptly landed him in jail. Geiger has been working for Mr. Austin near tho Grimes house. It is rumored that he is arrested on a charge of seduction. The State of California arrived in at 9 o'clock last evening. It was reported around town yesterday afternoon that she had broken down off Port Orford. Wo suppose the fact of her usual quick and successful trips on time led to the rumor. Capt. Jessen tho bar pilot in formed our reporter that the only cause for her being 12 hours behind time was p strong head wind and short chop sea all the way up. Tho Oregon left out. A distressing and fatal accident occur red on Tuesday last at Clifton, rr ulting in the death yesterdav of Johnny Mo Lane, infant son of J. W. ileLane. an employe in Cook's cannery. The little fellow, who was only eight months old, when his mother's attention was attract ed elsewhere in the houso, managed to pull over a kettle of boiling water on himself, sustaining injuries which all the parent's care could not prevent from proving fatal. Two severe casualiliea occmral on the steamship Oregon whilo on her way down from Portland yesterday. A steerage passenger named Clark, aged CO years, in falling from his berth, sustains! n frac ture of the left thigh bone. Clark is a resident of California. One of the hands on board had his lingers badly mashed while handling freight. On arrival hero both unfortunates wero conveyed to St. Mary's hospital, where Dr. Baker reduced tho fracture, assisted by Dr. Fulton. Sacrilege. Some wrotch or wretches having nuit her the fear of God or inaH before their eyes, saorilegiously stole from tho session room of the First Prosbyterian church some time between Sunday evening and Tues day morning, a silver-plated communion set, consisting of two bread salvers, two goblets, one wine pitcher and two bap tismal fonts. Yesterday morning the sexton going into the church discovered a man lying down on tho floor apparently asleep. Mr. Holden's residence being oh the adjoining lot, alio immediately in formed that gentleman, who proceeded to tho church in time to seo the intruder leaving it. Mr. Holden arrested tho man and turned him over to Chief Loughery. Nothing was found upon his person, and tho supposition is he is n poor drunken vagrant and not connected with th4 rob bery of the sacramental service. Solid Fact for t!i ('onsiderttlou of City Taximj era. At the meeting of the city council held on last Tuesday evening, ordinances were passed legalizing tho collection of the es timated cost of improving West Ninth street and also, of West Eighth and Gen evieve streets. These estimates were pre pared by tho city surveyor and we have no doubt they aro as near correct as can be. The proposed improvement pf the streets mentioned was properly advertised in The Asxoeiak as by law re quired, and it was stated at tho council meeting that not one of the property holders jntorested had sent in any re monstrance against it. This is gratify ing and evidenoas the fact that, no mat ter what the cost, the owners of city lotB eligible for building purposes and in dose proximity to tho business center, are anxious and willing to have the streets in front of the same improved and made approachable, thereby enhancing the beauty of our favored city. We think, however; that some of the owners of lots along the line of the proposed im provements will be somewhat astonished when called upon to pay into the city treasury the amount which has been as sessed against them. On West Eighth and Genevieve, tho cost per lot was esti mated at from $8i5 to $1,100. On West Nin th, from $83 to $550. Now the ques tion arises will these property holders in view of these high assessments sanction any action of the council toward increas ing the salary of already well paid offi cials, whereby tho heavy taxation for city expenses may be rendered Ptill more bur densome. The interests of hundreds of our citizens is involved in the question, s the improvement of many other streets, besides those mentioned, is al ready before the council, as well as, in the near future, the expense of construct ing drains and sewers, all of which is necssary and for tho general welfare of of the whole community and not, as in other eases, for the benefit of local poli ticians. It was then moved that in case of anv vacancies or withdrawal .of nominees before election, the county committee bo authorized to nominate n substitute for any auch vacancy, subject of course to the approval of all good democrats. The business of the convention being conoluded,Mr. Leinenweber being present was called on for a speech. The gentle man promptly responded with one of his characteristic earnest addresses. He thanked the convention for the honor they had conferred upon him and he hoped he duly appreciated tho responsi bility resting upon him to lead the ticket they had nominated on to victorv. Of this, howGver, he felt assured, nn5 was only sorry that tho republicans had not nominated a stronger candidate to op pose him. He would not say much at this time and on this occasion, as he in tended to address his expected constiu ents at length on the topics in which they were all interested, during the cam paign. He would remind them, however, and he could eay it to their faces, that he had not solicited the honor of the nomi nation at their hands, and he therefore, if elected, would feel free to net accord ing to the best of his judgment oven though the course he pursued might not coincide at all times with their views. Mr. W. G. Ross, nominee for sheriff, in a neat speech thanked the delegates, and assured them he would spare no efforts to secure the election of all the nominees of the convention. Isaac Bergman being called upon thanked tha convention for the honor they had again conferred upon him in nominating him for county treas urer, and as ho had been there before, he hoped his experience in the past would avail him on this occasion. Whou asked if tha f aot of his partner, Mr. A. W. Ber ry, being his opponent on the republican ticket would cause him to relax his efforts to secure his own election, Mr. Bergman scorned the idea and assured the dele gates that when it camo down to repub lican versus democrat, "friendship ceases then and there." On motion the convention then ad journed sine die. Order or Chosen Friead.
