Follo-Kiu2 is the platform adopted by the Democratic state convention at The Dallos, April 17th: The Democracy of the state of Oregou, in council assembled, declare: Firet That we favor tho forfeitnro of all unearned railroad and yagon road grants and the opening of iho land to settlement and occupancy by those en titled to tho benefits of tho various laud laws of the United States. Knnnrwl Thnt ten nrn in favor of the 1 passage bv congress of law3 made in the state commerce, and also state laws, con trolling and regulating fares and freights upon all transportation lines, and pre venting discrimination in favor of or against persons or places. Third That we look with alarm upon the unauthorized assumption of power and jurisdiction of United States courts in interfering with officers collecting the Tevenue of the state of Oregon. Fourth That we are in favor of the mortgage tax law, and believe the prin ciple of taxation enunciated therein is correct and ought to be sustained. Fifth That we favor the passage of such laws in relation to the assessment and collection of taxes as will make the assessment end taxation of property equal and uniform throughout the state, and demand the strict enforcement of such laws when enacted. Sixth That the power conferred by the federal constitution upon congress to enact tariff laws was given for -the sole and exclusive purpose of deriving reve nues, for the support of such government, and that the -enacting of any tariff law tor any other purpose, such as taxation of otie-classof people, is as entirely un warranted by the constitution as it is re pugnant to justice and inimical to the general welfare, and we therefore favor a tariff for .revenue, limited to the necessi ties.of -government economically admin istered, and n.gradual but persistent re duction of the existing protective duties. Seventh That the improvement of our coast harbors, the Columbia river and its tributaries, fa of vital importance to the commerce of the whole state of Oregon, and wo earnestly ask that an adequate appropriation be made by our present congress to begin the work of the Colum bia fiver bar improvement, already too Jong neglected, we also ask such appro priation for tho Cascade locks as will in sure their speedy completion; also, wo ask of our representatives in congress a united effort to secure a liberal appropri ation for the -improvement and continua tion of the work of improving tho har bors of Yaquina bay, Coos bay and tho Coqnillo river. Eighth That we favor the abolition of the prison contract system, and the pres ent coolie trade conducted on this coast, as degrading to the wage workers of the countty-. .Ninth That for the purpose of pre venting growing frauds in our elections, and to preserve the fruits of the ballot box, we favor the passage of a registry law. Tenth That wo are in favor of moro efficient mechanics' lien laws. MOCIKTV 3IEETIXGS. Temple LodffO, No. 7 A. F. A. It would bo a great relief to somo ' of us simple-minded farmers if this clever pen-driver could come to oar relict and solve a difficulty that is . rricinrr nc Tilf1 Hero it is: .... .. I have a litllo farm of five hundred acres. It is supposed to bo private property. Yery well. On ono fair summer day I find half a dozen good looking gentlemen, with instruments, on my laud, busy as Satan, driving stakes and making notes as they sight their way along my best meadow land. I ask, politely, what they are about. 'Making a survey for a bee-line from Pittsburg to Chicago." "Through my farm?" "Through your farm." ' 'But I will not have it The road j will ruin my farm. Now stop where J you are, or-rather. get off my place, j You have not ev6n been polite enough J to ask mv nermission." ' 4,It is not considered necessary," the head man answers. "We should lose much time by going through with such a ceremony with farmers. This is a public improvement, and if the right of way is denied, we appeal to tho courts; your land is con demned and paid for. and there is an end of it." As this is true, I am forced to sub mit. After the road is built, to my great injur', as a public improve ment, I take a carload of cattle to the depot and ask to have them freighted to Chicago. I find the charges a third moro than the same road demands fifty miles nearer Chi cago, and double", oven, what the charges should be. Somewhat iadig nant, for it is taking all the profit out of my beef, I say I will not pay. "Then you cannot transport your cattle," is the answer. "I will appeal to tho courts, thii is infamous." "And the courts will tell you. my dear sir, that they have no right to interfere. This i3 private properly and exclusively private business. Tho courts can as well fix your price of heof as our rates." Now, will tho Nationor some other tony journal tell mo where tho pub lic improvement ends and private property begins? Bonn Piatt.
