OJ fir fa ffll iflrir I ittfeiftfiWfefl AI iT iflrif ifriil VOL. XX, NO. 118. ASTORIA, OREGON, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1884. PRICE, FIVE CENTS. MYSTICAL BROTHERHOOD. Initiating a Brother Iuto the iljiterl ous Order. It "was in Madison some years ago, and my xecollection of that trip (I Was then a "drummer") make? me shudder, I had been round for about two days and made good sales, and had also made the acquaintance of some good fellows (as 1 thought) in the central part of town. I waa with a party at the Central Hotel, talk ing and joking when one of them said to me: You'd bettor remain to-night and join our beloved order the Slystical Brotherhood. It'll be a great benefit tp .you in your travels. It's the best society in the state and you can make friends by being known as a "member in ten minutes after you stop atsa city or a Tillage. I, like a sucker, took the cork un der, and stayed and joiued. The mysterious brotherhood then met in a hall at the ioteL Charley Bronson kept a saloon below the lodge room. " There were about twenty-five members of the lodge, and most of them were present to assist in my initiation. The officers were a high mogul, second high mogul, sec retary and treasurer. Inside and out side sentinelsand a comet with three assistants. I was received at the ante-room by a masked guard. 1 heard a gram voice inside say: "Is there any person in waiting to be initiated into our beloved order?" Another said: "There is one hard customer, my lord who has deposited the blunt ac cording to the requirements of our Bacred order." A bell tapped, and the whole order inside yelled "Amen! Amen!" I was led in. The whole assembly were in long gowns, reaching to their feet, of various colors, and had their faces masked. I was blindfolded, and led three times around the room, while they were all saying: "Should you feel inclined to cenbure Faults you may in others view. Ask your own heart ere you venture If it has not -failings too!" The bell tapped and I was halted before the nigh MoguL Near him stood the comit and three aids with stuffed clubs three feet long. I was sworn to answer all questions truth fully and. keep the secrets of the order. Every time I failed to answer a ques tion immediately a stuffed club took me an awful belt "far below the belt" in the rear. The following questions were put and answered: High Mogul "Are you a married man?" Candidate "Yes." High MdguL.--"How many children have you? State their ages, sex and complexions." Before I had answered half I was fairly lifted by the stuffed clubs. High Mogul "Are you in the habit of running around nights?" I answered "No" right quickly, though it was not exactly the truth, to escape the clubs. The devils had a big plank in the room rigged by trestles, with one end seven feet high. Near the center of this "plank was a hinge that worked with a trigger, but I knew nothing of this until later in the proceeding. I heard all the while water running, as if the Teservoir was being emptied. The'bell tapped and I was marched arouna again. ine ureas ouogui asked: "How much water is there in the tank?" The answer was, "Four feet" The Mogul said: "Let it be deeper." Then he asked me: "Have you any money, watches, notes, papers, rings and precious stones that will be damaged by water?" "I said, "No." 'He then sang' eut: "How much water is in the tank?" "Six feet," was the answer. Grand Mogul "Let it bo deeper." I was then led to the plank and compelled slowly to ascend it I had reached the end of it and was on my knees when the Mogul called out again: "How much water is in the tank now?" The answer came, "Nine feet" The bell tapped the end of the plank flopped down, and I went headlong but not into a tank of water. I was caught in a large piece of stout can vass, supplied with hand holes around The edges and corners, and managed by eight or ten stout leiiows. jno sooner had I struck the canvass than I was tossed in the air several times. They shouted at every toss, "once more," till finally I struck the ceiling, then they quit The bell tapped, and I was walked up to a coffin with tin gutters around it, and in the gutters were various colored lights. In the coffin was one of the members, paint ed" up in as ghastly colors as possible, aridthe fellow representing the corpse had his mouth full of flour. I didn't know it of course, till they made me take another oath and stoop to kiss 'the corpse. The cuss blew fully a -teaspoonful of flour in my face and eyes. When I had cleaned and wiped off my countenance the Mysterious brotherhood all came around to me io shake hands. I shook, of course, b$ I clearly felt that if I. had two .six .shooters the population of Madi- jion would have been reduced to the extent of twelve. Madison Demo crat. .-- TheTJv&OB Girl on the Frontier. At a station in Montana the other day a3oston girl stuck her head out Tof a Northern Pacific car and ex claimed: "The bewildewing womance which cwowns this transcendental ioenewy with such indesewjb sble fascination and tinges its ,eewy featuh with such overpow'ing intewest quite bweaksmeupl" And a number of members of the local vigilance committee standing on the platform looked grimly into eaoh other's faces and muttered: "Oh! if 5t was only a man!" Five thousand petitions with the following heading will be sent out this week, in accordance with the suggestion of General Miller, in order to procure signatures to forward to Washington- To 4he senators and representatives of the United States, in congress as sembled: The people composing the states and territories of the Pacific coast have the honor very respect fully to represent to jour honorable bodies that it is their desire to hold a world's fair in San Francisco in 1887. As evidencing the earnestness of this movement, individual sub scriptions have or will be made to make an amount of 850,000, with assurance of additional subscriptions from the state and municipal govern ments. In order that the expression may be made national and interna tional in character, we respectfully suggest to the congres3 of the United States the propriety of extending to the location interested its aid. A liberal donation in this respectwill prove" of immense advantage to the coast, in promoting its commercial and material advancement and bring ing this now almost unknown country, with its varied resources aud unde veloped capacities, to a better knowl edge of the world. Here the com merce of continents may be exchanged and here established a better under standing between the people of di verse civilizations. It will also estab lish a precedent by the government in aid of such national undertakings in different parts of our country, as may be profitably followed, and impart a solution of the problem of the disbursement of our surplus money. In furtherance of this desire the people of the Pa cific coast most respectfully ask that congress appropriate for the purpose of a world s fair in San Francisco in 1887 the sum of $200,000, to be dis bursed under authority of the gov ernor of the state, and an executive committee now already constituted under that authority, and with such considerations as congress may deem necessary in the premises. How a 3Ian Made $200,000 in One Day. "Gould and Sage and those big bugs think they are mighty smart on speculating," said a talkative old gentleman from Jne, .Fa. ".But I'll wager none of 'em ever did a cuter thing than our Bill Scott did about five vears ago of course vou've heard of Bill Hon. William L. Scott, big railroad and iron man? Well, he had never been in any Wall street deals up to that time, had just attended strictly to business and let others do the gambling. One day a f riendgave him a pointer. Bill believed in it, went in heavy and quit 200,000 win ner. .Up in Erie we point out to strangers the Scott block hand somest building in town and te 1 'em the money that built it was made in one day. Fact, too, Scott made his deal in a single day and then quit, saying he knew when he had enough and that he was bound to be one man to quit ahead of Wall street Ch icago Herald. An Indianapolis paper reports these remarks of an old colored man to his little grandson, who was dib-' posed to laugh at the appearauce of a ' procession of veterans passing by: "Don't yer laff at dom old soldier mens, son, da don't look so mighty fine now, but when yer old grand daddy fust saw 'em comin' down yan der in South Calinada looked mighty like angels ob de Lord. Da don t step so spry and spruce as da used to, but da brought d'liberance to me and mine. Don't do it agin, son." . A Persian statesman reports a! rumor current throughout central Asia th.it the Kussians would bring warlike tribes into the rich plains of India as soon as England is in diffi culty, and that this did more to cause the submission of the Turcomans ' than the ability of the Russian gen-1 erals. He bxvb that Russia is using ' Afghans as an advance guard. itvl.-,.. j- i.k;. ii j ; m AUCV U.U LU1UB UUUUJ UUWU III J.BU- ' nessee.
