TRUE Temperance Is not signing a pledge or taking a solemn oath thst cannot be kept, because of the non-removal of the cause liquor. The way to make a man temperate is to kiii the desire for those dreadful artificial stimulants that car ry so many bright intellects to premature graves, and desolation, strife and uu happiness into so many families. Before the Court of Commissioners of Alabama claims at Washington comes a singular question, involving millions of dollars. The question is: Was the Boston "a Confederate Cruiser." The Boston was a towboat, owned bv merchants of Boston, Mass., plying between the port of rew Or leans and the Gulf of Mexico. In June, 1863, she had jnst entered the mouth of the Mississippi Iuver -witti a vessel in tow laden with ice when her captain concluded that a little of that ice would go well with some brandy and sugar and lemons he had. He went on board the ice-ship with tins object m view. Just at tuts mo ment an eight een-oared barge, com manded by a Confederate naval officer, which had been lying in wait in one of the numerous bayous which interlace that part of the coast, dart ed out, boarded the towboat, and the Confederates holding a pistol to the head of the pilot, compelled him to turn her silently down stream, her tow having been first cut loose. She passed under the very guns of a Unit ed States man-of-war then blockad ing the river, and escaped safely out to sea, and within a few hours after ward cantured bv surprise the ships Lenox and Tcxon, bound for New Orleans, each with a valuable cargo, the captain of each of the captured vessels tauuig the Jioston for a reg ular tow-boat, The milling business 5n Minnesota is said to be cxcessivelv overdone. and the millers think that their bright arithmetic is in error when it asserts that ten mills make a cent. The workmen have lost about $23, 000 in wages by the shutting down of mills on the Penobscot from the drought The lumber product has been cut down over lv,W,v'Jd feel. The falls at Bumford, Me., said to lxi the biggest water-power in New .hnglaud, are about to be used here is said to be bj.(KX) horse iower between these ialls and tidewater.
