Joe Surprenant sends greeting from the far off hills of CJcorgia. He is at Macon, the state capital. Wm. Loeb goes to Gray's Harbor this morning, in which country he is building up an extensive business. Oregon Transcontinental has ap parently touched bottom, and this week will probably set the bears to dancing. There's an unlikely rumor that the Central Pacific It. Jt. Co. is about to establish a line of steamers between this port and San Francisco. While quarreling at Vancouver last Friday night a private named Shay shot and killed John lieilly, of the same Batter' A, 1st Artillery. The British bark Oberon, 1180, Harvey, master, 131 days from Hull, arrived in yesterday. Both "Ober on's" made good time. The CoJouui sailed for Hong Kong. Airyone finding a receipt from the receiver at Ohympia for forty acres of land, in favor of H. H. Marden, will confer a favor on the loser by leaving it at the 0. R. it 2s. Co.;s office. A lady in Kansas went out walk ing in a "Mother Hubbard" dress and was arrested for "somnambulism." The Kansas idea of etiquette may be somewnat sweeping, but it is very tight-laced. D. Butler, conductor of a con struction train on the Kalama branch of the N. P. R. R., was thrown un dcr the cars by the ditching of the train last Sunday afternoon, and in stantly killed. Authentic information is received that Kinney Bros, are about to build a saw mill on the Alderorook property, having a water frontage on blocks 1 and 2. The estimated cost of the structure is 40,000. The Salem Tall: sa3Ts that when the sheriff levied on the undivided half of the Salem Statesman as the property of Odell, that that gentle man announced that Senator Dolph owned his interest in the Statesman The New York papers are reduc ing their prises. Real estato is in demand and at healthy figures. Alderbrook lots are especially the favorite this week. By reference to another column it will be seen that The Daily Asto uian 13 about to take a new departure. In the interests o our advertisers we are about to introduce some important changes m tho paper, which will re sult in increased circulation. Wo want to place the city circulation at 1000. To do this wc have decided to furnish it hereafter in any part of the city at fifteen cents per week, delivered by the carrier. The Daily Astorian has the reputation of being the best paper in the northwest for local news. It will hereafter be the cheapest, also. On and after the 27th inst. the camera will furnish the Daily to city sub scribers at fifteen cents per week. We expect to place the paper in every family in Astoria and upper town. Sometime ago we ordered a new dress for the paper and expected to celebrate the beginning of the twenti eth volume by appearing in a style better suited to our ideas than the present one is. The material has been unavoidably delayed, but we expect to appear in the new dress by the 1st of next month. The Gray's Harbor Trade. The withdrawal of the Gen. .Wiles from the route between here and Gray's Harbor will leave the matter of water communication between that co'untry and Astoria in just about the same condition it was when the Shoal water Bay Transportation compauy put that steamer on, with this differ ence : that two year have made a wonderful change over there. People are pouring into the Chehalis country. They are producers and consumers. They want to trade, and will transact their business with whatever city can offer them the best terms. That trade naturally belongs to Astoria, and it is for Astoria to secure and retain it. The last number of the Chehalis Vi tlftte in speaking of the withdrawal of the Miles, says that the' will have to make other arrangements. The mat ter is an important one. and is com mended to the attention of our citi zens, in less some means oi commun. ication is furnished by Astorians, there will either be a boat put on by Port land, or tho lumber schooners that ply between the harbor and San Francisco will carry supplies from the latter point. Astoria andPortland Telegrapliliine. From Mr. Hamilton, the telegraph perator at this place, it is learned that tiie new line built from Portland to Kalama leaves the old line exclusi- ely to Astoria business. This will, to a certain extent, mitigate the fre- pient annoyance occasioned by a rush of business, or the more familiar trouble of "line down." As it is now, there are three lines, one from Sea ttle to Portland, via Kalama; one from Tacoma to Portland, via Kala ma; and the Astoria line which runs from this city to a point opposite Oak Point, where it crosses the Columbia, thence to Kalama, and Vancouver, where it again crosses into Oregon and connects with the central office at Portland. jjlrs. John liobson received a cablegram from her husband yester day afternoon dated Liverpool, Eng., October 22d, stating that he had made the ocean voyage in safety and was in excellent health. The Pacific Brewing Company filed articles of incorporation in tho office of the secretary of state, at Salem, last Saturday. The purposes for which this incorporation is formed are for the manufacture of malt liquors. The principal place of busi ness will be at Upper Astoria, and the capital stock 10,000. The incorpor ators are Henry Humble, Theresa O'Brien and Earnest Papmahl. Mr. B. W. Robson has returned from San Francisco, where he had been attending the annual meeting of the Knappton Packing Company, which was held in Oakland. The company declared a handsome divi dend to its stockholders, and carried an amount to its surplus fund as the result of their last season's business The following officers were elected for the ensuing j'ear: George D. Met- calf, President; C. A. Tuttle. Vice President; B. W. Robson, Superin tendent. Sold by W. E. Dement. As Others Bee TJs. The remarks of the different news paper correspondents concerning Ore gon, and Astoria in particular, make funny reading. Here is a sample, written by E. V. Smalley, for his own paper, the Xorthicest, published in New York city : Tho old town at the mouth of the Columbia river, founded by John Jacob AstorS fur trading colony in 1811, had but a sleepy existence, after its early troubles with the Indians and the Hudson Bay company were out lived, until the great development of the salmon catching and canning industry in recent years. Now the annual catch of this superb fish in the Columbia is s enormous that half a million cases of four dozen cans each are every season shipped to the mar kets of all parts of the civilized world. This great business of drawing wealth out of the sea with nets has built up the once lonely little hamlet, over shadowed by dense forests, into a live- commercial town. What with the fishermen, the workmen in the canner ies, the men who make boats and nets, the saw-mill operatives, the trades people and the sailors who cruise up and down the neighboring coasts, the place contains a population not far from ten thousand in the busy season of the vear. Our engraving does not well show the unique feature of Astoria. Only in the foreground, for a little distance beyond the government building, do the streets run on terra firma. Be nin!, as far as the town extends, they are bridges of stout fir planks, resting on piles. The stores, hotels, ware houses and canneries are also pile-supported over the salt water which ebbs and llows beneath their floors. Two three streets manage to climb the steep hills that skirt the river, and thus to get out into the country, and another circles around tho base of the hills; but the town fcr the most part is as amphib ious as a beaver, taking to tho water in preference to the land. Many of the inhabitants disdain even the mod erate security of foundations for their houses of piles driven in the wave- washed strand, and live in boats which look like diminutive Noah's Arks. These queer crafts are tied to wharves or to the street bridges, an chored to what correspond to vacant lots quadrangular pools waiting pur chasers with pile-driving and house building intentions. Their owners return from the hard and perilous work of fishing in the bar to spread their nets to dry on the roofs of the arks, cook their frugal suppers within, and then sit out on the deck to smoke their evening pipes. Most ot ttie traltic ot the place is carried on in boats, which easily pass underneath the streets amid the piles and ply upon the broad bay between the lower and upper town- There are stages, however, which go from the hotels to the wharves to meet the big steamers from San Francisco and the Portland steamboats, and omni buses which run back and forth on the main street, and also a few drays and trucks. Every vehicle can be heard for half a mile as it rumbles over the resonant planks of the streets, and the town does not have a chance to to sleep to the drowsy music of the sea, swishing ana swashing beneath it. The people are a medley of many nationalities, Germans, Mexicans, Italians, Spaniards an'l Chinamen, with a predominance, however, of tho pushing, trading, money-making na tive American element. Historically. Astoria is the most interesting place in Oregon. Across tho broad river is Gray's harbor, where the Yankee Captain Gray dropped anchor in the ship "Columbia," in 1702, giving to tho great river he had discovered the name of his vessel, and at the same time securing for his country a title to all the rich regions it holds on the Pa cific coast, between California and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On a little stream, putting into the Columbia few miles from the town, the expedi tion of Lewis and Clarke wintered in 180ii-(I, after its memorable journey across the continent. And the town itself is full of traditions of the Astor colony, whose story Washington Irv ing made a part of the literature of the nglish-speaking race, the world over. The Amana dropped alongside Gray's dock to discharge 150 tons Australian coal. Resardinir this Coal Cliff coal, 250 tons of which was re cently unloaded for Capt. Gray from the Killoclian, the Sydney Bulletin of October 21, 1882, says: This new coal, with a good draught and range and bars, kept woll free from ash, makes a stronger, more last ing and cleaner fire than any other. It neither has the objectionable and smoky flare of Newcastle coal, nor does it splinter and fly off like the Western, but it affords that domestic desideratum' of some kinds of Enli.h cial of heating an iron, or cooking a ;eak as thoroughly and cleanly as a charcoal breeze fire, while it unparU to the steak none of that disagreeable odor of the unwholesome fumes given off 1)3 a breeze or gas fire. It is said that the Northern Pa cific Railroad Company have decided upon a twenty per cent reduction in the salaries of all employes, to take place on the 1st of November. Res ignations are pouring in as a conse quence. News. A large amount of land withdrawn for the benefit of the O. & C. R. R. in 1871 has been restored to the public domain on account of the route de flecting to the west and changing the limits of the grant to said road. This laud is mostly situated in Douglas county and is subject to pre-emption and homestead settlement and to en try, when surveyed, at $1.25 per acre. Oreaonian.
