The result of Tuesday's elec tion in Ohio is as yet undeter mined, though it is believed that Judge Hoadley, the Democratic candidate for governor, is elected bT a small majority, and that the Democrats carry a majority of the legislature. This last is in even greater dispute than the guberna torial returns; upon 'the political complexion of the newly elected legislature depends whether Sena tor Pendleton's successor in the H. S. Senate shall be Democratic or Republican. Ohio has all along been consid ered a Republican state, giving trarfield 34,227 majority three years ago. The election this year turned on what may be called lo cal issues, at the bottom of which lay the question of prohibition. The real question in Ohio last Tuesday was not whether Hoadley or Forak'er should be elected gov ernor, but whether saloons should or should'not be taxed. Republi cans championed the provision of license, and a temporary defeat will probably nerve the prohibi tion leaders to a renewed effort. fn Towa the Republicans csyry the worlcs by a majority vastly re duced from the Garfield majority of 7S,12G, in 1SS0. In the Hawkcyc state, also, the question of prohibition was the most prominent feature of the campaign, and the Republican majority will be generally accepted as furnishing figures indicating the popular .feeling in Iowa as regards that movement. Aukaxgemijxt.s are being made by Mr. Blackfan, chief of the for eign postal service at Washington, to admit the Australian colonies into the international postal union. When this is accomplished, the whole world, practically, will be in the union, and a uniform rate of (5 cents will pa' for a letter to any place on the globe with the ex ceptioirof Batavia. The Austra lian colonies have been kept out this long because they could not very well adopt so cheap a rate and pay the subsidies they do. They pay a subsidy of 600,000 a year to the steamship line running to San Francisco, and also a boun ty to mail carriers by the Suez Canal. They have proposed to the countries of the International union to come in at once with the same conditions. They an' wil ling to accept the five cent rate for matter sent to any part of their do main, but desire to keep up their rates until the present contracts with the steamship lines have ex pired. Mr. Blackfan, for the Uni ted States, has accepted these con ditions, and he thinks that thsy will be acceded to generally. It must be agreed to unanimously among the nations in order to be effective: Tin: Panama canal company are pushing work with a. labor force f six thousand laborers, most of ! whom are negroes from the "West Indies. Six dredges are also being used to good advantage in loading cars, which are hauled to a dump ing ground some twelve miles dis . tant from the canal. . The capital is furnished to a large extent by Americans and English. The Washington territorial leg islature is about to pass a law making it impossible for quack doctors to practice medicine in the territory. It is a good idea. An other law should be passed com pelling physicians to practice un der their own names. Seattle would lose one practitioner should such a law prevail. The fact that Geo. D.Robinson is Republican candidate for gov ernor oi Massachusetts, against bold Ben Butler, the Democratic standard bearer, impels the belief in the minds of many that George D. Robinson lie Is not the man to beat Governor B. A cokrespoxdext of the "Wash ington Capital -says: "A "Wall street broker friend of mine says his firm are borrowing all the money they want at two per cent a year and charging customers six per cent a year for the use of it. 'We cleared 15,000 on interest alone in August,' he says. '"When our customers order us to buy cer tain shares of stock for them thev put up ten per cent as the total in vestment, and that makes us re sponsible for ninety per cent. If the stock is left idle on our hands for any length of time we charge interest on that ninety per cent. So, you see, if the market is dull, the profit lies in the interest: if it is lively, it is in the commission: In either case we come out ahead." The Oregonian makes a good point in calling attention to the prevailing folly of agricultural j production, viz; raising wheat and j nothing but wheat. No marfcft in ! the world is so subject to iluctua-! tion and violent competition as the wheat market. No market in the world affords greater inducements to fruit and dairy interests than the northwest. Concentration on one crop and purchase of all things else, will, in the end impov erish the country that adopts such a suicidal course. Late European advices are to the effect that Germany is schem ing'to embroil France in another war and is doing all it can to ex asperate its Gallic neighbors. The French press express the utmost confidence in the condition of the country, and think that France is fully prepared to go to war. This opinion is not shared by journals outside of France, some of the lat ter asserting that another Franco German war would be Sedan and Metz over a train.
