An exchange thinko it is strango how accustomed people will become to the repeated occurrence of events which, if there were but one in a life time, or even in a series of years, would create the most intense excite ment. Note, as an instance, adds tho Fircinun's Junnuil, the destruction of property by fire in this country. Think how many men, how much cap ital, and how great a share of the in telligent thought of the land are kept constantly employed because of this. Every municipality in the land is con stantly agitated over tho question of fire extinguishment, every property owner over the question of fire insur ance, and every builder and property owner over that of fire prevention. Each in turn gives employment to a vast number of mon whoso whole thought is engrossed by this annual wiping out of existence of a portion of the wealth of the land, by no means inconsiderable, whether regarded ab solutelj, or in its relation to the en tire production of the year. Thus, since the 1st of January thore has been destroyed by fire in this coun try, 34,900, 27 worth of property, and wo may reasonably expect that tns unal snowing tor tlie wnole year will not be less than $SO,000,000. Unsatisfied Mortgages. Under the mortgage tax law, en the acted by the last legislature. county clerk is required to furnish to the assessor,' on the 1st of August, an abstract of all unsatisfied mortgages showing the owners of the same and the amount due thereon; and it is made the duty of the assessor to as sess such debt and security for the full amount that appears from the records to be owing, unless the land mortgaged is not worth as much as appears due on such mortgages, and in that event to assess the security at what he con considers its cash value. Under the law all unsatisfied mortgages are re quired to be assessed. The county clerk is now compiling an abstract that will be ready at the requisite time. The number in Clatsop county will be small, not ascresatin" over 00. Being entirely vegetable, no partic ular care is required whilo using Dr. Pierce s "Pleasant Purgative Pellets.' Our sensation paper. Our paper which has and must have something new, true, horrible and startlins in it once every twenty-four hours. Something to curdle the blood and thrill tho nerves. Some thing to electrify 3ou and wake you up all over when you touch it at tho breakfast table. One of the great features of this latter half of the nine teenth century. Everything fi3h that comes to our net. Only one idea pre vades us in making this paper. Sen- satio! Print truth, print lies, print scandal, print prudency, print any thing. Sensation! Ruin character, wound feelings, break hearts, break into privacy, invade into private life, do anything, so that the one great end is answered. Sensation! Defend morality and publish licentiousness in disguise in its defense. Defend purity and virtue, and besmirch a reputation daily in their defense. Find abuses and publish a column of rot in ferret ing them out. Find you "moral cankers," "moral cancer;?," "craters of vice" in ten minutes. Sink or swim, live or die, rule or ruin, sour, savage, cynical and sensational. Bound to raise a laugh or blush or hit, and then publish the "disgusting de tails," and stimulate everybody's curi osity to know more. High jinkal High pressure! Our principles? Sensation? Es pouse a cause of reform? Of course, thero's only a sensation iu it. Hard work? Yes, it is to keep the thing up to boiling point. Expletives fail, superlatives give out, and start ling headlines run dry. There come awfully dull days when everything is monotonously proper and nobody does anything fiendish, and it is impossible to invent any new kind of iniquity; but, thank fortune, there are very few of thorn.
