Astoria cherries are now ripe and
in size and flavor are at least equal to

the only fault is. there is not enough
of them.
Rev. H. K. Uines. editor of the
Pacific Christian Advocate, and wife
who have been in the city for the past
three days return to Portland this
morning.
A. J. Cloutrie, whose saddle and
harness ahoj) was burned in the late
fire has opened again in Page's new
building in tho rear of the Odd Fel
lows' temple.
The old pear trees that are now
being cut down near Col. Taylor's
residence are historic, having borne
fruit in 1857; the march of improve
ment, however, is removing them.
.The flags throughout the city
were at half-mast yesterday as a token
of mourning for the death of Father
Powers, in whose demise the entire
community feels a senso of personal
loss.

In the Btate circuit court at Port-
laud last Thursday, tho case of tho
city of Portland againBt O. Season,
being on trial, the jury found a ver
dict of guilty against Season. This
sustains Judgo Moreland's decision,
aad the right -of tho city to tax all
places where liquor is sold.
Courtwright & Hawkins minatrels
arrived yostorday and gave our citi
zens somo first class music on their
street parade. At eight o'clock Oc
cidental Hall was filled with an ap
preciateive audience; the entertain
ment was a good one and could have
"been repeated to an equally large
house.
The work of driving piles for tho
foundation of the pivotal pier of the
railroad bridge is progressing favora
bly. Jos. Smith states that yesterday
arid day boforo about twenty-five piles
were put in place, being driven to a
depth of twenty to twenty-two feet,
when it was found that they could be
driven no further. There is no trou
ble about a Bolid foundation. Ore-

in the possession of such a plenitude of
affectionate remembrance as is rarely
vouchsafed to any man in a commu
nity. The speaker dwelt at length
upon tho admirable qualities of Father
Powers, his patience, his good intent
and beneficial service to the church,
and read passages from the diary
which he kept during his long sick
ness. These, more especially, the
concluding lines urittvii when the
hand was jilmost stilled in death,
were peculiarly 'atTociiug. Pass
ing to a wider theme of thought
the speaker dwelt upon the necessity
of Christian eliort, the losson that
death conveyed, the requirements of
the Christian lifts and the rewards
that it assured to those who were
faithful to the end.
He was followed by Rev. Dr. A. L.
Lindsley, pastor of the First Presby
terian church of Portland, who de
livered a short and beautiful address
upon the relation of the Christian to
the State, his position as a pioneer,
and alluding to the thinning ranks of
those who are among us with gray
heads and bowed forms, the advance
guard who came here .years ago, said in
the name of the pioneers of Oregon
ho spoke thoso words of one who was
himself a pioneer, and ai ded iu devel
oping tho essential elements of civili
ization in this remote corner of our
country. "Safe in the arms of Jesus'
was then rendered by the choir, and
after a prayer by Win. Wadhanis of
Portland, the body bonio by Messrs.
W. H. Gray, E. C. Holden, H. Pow
ell, Jno. Brico, Win. Wadhanis and
Carl Hanson, was carried to the dock,
where tho steamer conveyed it, to
gether with the friends and relatives
of tho deceased, to its last resting
place by the sea, whore thirty-six
years ago, Mr. rowers hart noon or
dained as elder in what was then the
only Presbyterian church on this
coast.
So ends the last aet iu a life drama
of four score years duration, and
though tho grave cover all that 13
mortal of the old man whom it was
our privilege to call a friend, yet the
memory of his kind'' presence will
noc soon leave us, and that the end of
life may be as full of hope and as
bright with promise as was his, ia the
most heartfelt wish of all who knew
and loved him in life.
Life Saving Service.
Major T. J. Blakeney, superinten
dent of life saving service on this
coast arrived on the State j'esterday,
and starts lo Shoalwatcr bay this
morning on an additional tour of
obsen'ation. It is Major Blakeney 's
intention to have a complete system
of life stations with competent crews
attached at every station on this
northwestern coast. He is a thorough
going official and ha3 personal knowl
edge of the requirements of the situa
tion, it is his desire to establish a
life crew at Shoal water bay, and have
a permanent crew at tho cape com
poBed of suitable material, and ready
for immediate action when necessary.

ceived an ordor trom the supremo
secretary of the American Legion of
Honor for the sum of 83,000, benefit
fund to be paid to .las. A. Vaughn,
husband of the late Mrs. Mary E
N aughn, who was a member of the

first benefit order that vas received
at Astoria, Mrs. aughn being the
first member of that beneficial i

think of the creature who sent that
dispatch. . it cannot be that any citi
zen has done it.
Stabbed in the Breast.
At an early hour yesterday morning
Leonard Chance, a young man of
twenty or twenty-one was stabbed in
the breast by a man who is said to be
Wm. Burbury, and severely wounded.
Chance was standing at the bar in
George Hill's saloon, and, it is said,
was intoxicated, and using abusive
language to the bar keeper. His
assailant came in and leaning up
against the bar drow a knife and
stabbed Chance in the breast, sever
ing the cartilage just below the breast
bone and inflicting an ugry, but not
necessarily fatal wound. Then turn
ing, he made all possible speed out of
the place, pursued by a crowd who
finally caught him in Astor street,
just east of Cass. He was arrested
by officer Steabb and Hunter who
were with the pursuing pariy and
placed in jail, he was brought be
fore Judge Fox yesterday at half past
five. The judge set the preliminary
examination for one o'clock this after
noon. Chance was resting easy last
evening and seemed in no immediate
danger.
No Water This Season
D. P. Thompson had some men at
work yesterday fishing out some of
the six miles of pipo that fell iu the
bay after the lire. Sixty-seven pieces
were lifted out, and found to be in a
very poor condition, not being tit for
use; the supposition is that all tho
pipe is in the same condition. Mr.
Thompson will not bo able to get any
more pipe out here before January
1st, which puts an end to any idea of
getting water from Bear creek or any
other creek this year. Ho is now
building a reservoir on the hill,
57x125x13 feet, which will hold a
million and a half gallons, and will
put in place all the city pipe procura
ble, and do all that he cm do with
the materinl at his command.

perts will probably spend about one
week between here and Astoria.
Forest fires are raging all around but
have not done any damage to the set
