A Puget Sound lawyer, oMong practice, told this story on himself during the last term of the Seattle ceurt: "Once, before I was ad mitted to practice, an otherwise real good fellow was arrested on a charge of smuggling, and I, with his other friends, undertook to help" him out. The eridence it seemed would be strong against him, so we thought to pack the jury. An old subject of the good queen wa3 found who agreed to 'hang' the jury. In those days no food was allowed a jury until an agreement or a dischargexwas'had. So we filled the lining of the old man's coat with biscuits, hard tack, etc., and told him to hang out forever. The trial came on. The evidence was astonishingly weak as were the prosecutor's ar guments to the jury. After the jury was out about twenty-four hours, it was said that th old Englishman was still hanging. We chuckled. Finally some of the jurymen found the biscuits, took them from the old man, and were going to throw him out of the window, so they told him. After many weary hours the jury reported a disagreement and were discharged. We thought the old man was a trump. Approaching one of the jurors, we innocently said: 'How did it stand?' 'Eleven to one for acquittal.' " Post-Intelligencer.. An incorporated company is about to begin work on the Clatskanine river. They have secured land at the head of navi gation where they will erect at once a large saw mill. Here they will work the rough lumber into dressed stuff and manufacture doors, windows, sashes, etc. From up the river a "V" flume will run, and as auxilliaries there will be several smaller mills to cut up the logs and send the rough lumber to the lower mill.
