C2- I,,, ,n ! t;fym.-a-m gfe J3uilg Qstvviatu ASTORIA, OREGON: THURBDAT. ...MAY 31, 1883 The Oregon Short Line. Fbom the East come conflicting stories in reference to the Oregon 'shorf line, one assertion being that the-O. S. L. doesn't intend to stop short, and turn over all its traffic -7- to a rival -four hundred miles from tidewater; a contrary declaration wooSuag from Sydney Dillon, who asserts the truth of a previous dis patch relative to an 'alleged com pact between that company and . " JtiVillard lines. The former Matatement seems the most .likely. 'Should the managers of that line wlshto get an ocean terminus they oeald follow up the Malheur to Lake Harney and across the head 'waters of the Deschutes to the astern slope of the Cascades. There would be no other railroad 'Jthrougb that section to interfere with local business and there wpuW be an abundance of rich tillable glands.1 Going west they could cross either the Mackenzie or the Minto pass, the latter being in our opinion preferable, and thus lSmta the "Willamette Valley through a country offering a constantly increasing business. From there it is compara- . tively easv to reach Astoria via Salem. The entire cost from the mouth of the Malheur to Astoria would be several millions less 'than to Seattle from the same .point, though the distance would be about the same, with this ad- - ditional advantage in our favor 'that Astoria is several hundred miles nearer points of trans oceanic shipment than our neigh bors on the Sound. Oh, Pshaw! California, and especially the city of San Francisco, is mt with jealousy on every side jealousy of eastern manufacturers whom we have made rich by our trade. -Oregon, our own. neighbor, is also - ioalous, and yet no one outside of Portland rejoices more in the wondrous prosperity of that city than San Francisco merchants, though to many of them it brings the certainty of an early loss of some valued trade. Are all American communities so selfish that they cannot, as citizens of this great United States, rejoice in the frosperity of any part ercept the ittle section in which they live? S. JF. Mcrcliant. Our S&n Francisco contempora ry makes the mistake of supposing that Portland is Oregon. Come uphere and take a look arounJ. Bless you, there is no "jealousy!" But there is -all through this great northwest a deep feeling of thank fulness that the C. P. cinch will soon be a thing of the past, and that competition in freights will raise the present embargo on mauy things we in Oregon have been compelled to forego. The fact that Ben Butler has been detected in an attempt to &be&t his -way as a dead -head on a Massachusetts railway train, les sens the confidence leposed in "him by many 1rorth3' people. A futile attempt is being made in'the interior of the state to en force the "Sunday law." A law ff4that,is not backed by public opin . UmHs worse' than no law at all. MARRIED. In this city. May 28, 1883, by the Rev. Father DIelrnan, pastor of the Catholic cfaurcb, Mr. Duncan Stewart, to Miss Ewbi Fox, daughter of Justice Fox, all this city. In Upper Astoria, May 29, 1883, by Rev. J. W.
