Frederick Marvin, of the First Congregation al church of Portland, which has the ivords quoted at the head of this article as a title. The sermon is a homily upon the power, influ ence and responsibility of the editor of a daily newspaper. The reverend gentleman then speaks of the enterprise of the press, and the universality of its circulation. He says: "The newspaper enters thou sands of homes; we fin'd it upon the breakfast table; in tho dining room; the office; the shop; where ever man goes the paper goes. It is tho only library multitudes ever think or care for. All there is for them of art, culture, history and literature flows into their lives through the columns of the daily newspaper." He thinks, and justly, that news papers which pander to criminal demands and gratify the lust of immoral readers are equally re sponsible with other law breakers and criminals, and makes a point in charging the daily press with giv ing undue prominence to scandal and details of criminal procedure. He sas: "Ask the editor to publish bet ter material, and he will be likely to reply, with vision fastened upon the money drawer, I print what people want to read.' Has he then no responsibility in the shap ing of public opinion? Is he jus tified in writing whatever will sell? May he ruin the human soul upon the ground that it paysr'' This is an arraignment of tho3e who prostitute their opportunities and discount the future for present proceeds. That there are occa sions which merit the lanp-uajre is but too evident. Mr. Marvin goes on to criticise the "reckless indiffer ence" displayed by many newspa pers in the reception of their ad vertisements, and deplores the fact that newspapers are discour teous to each other. There is a great deal of truth in all he says, and with the exception of an in ane suggestion regarding the "establishment of colleges of jour nalism," there is a good deal of sense in tho discourse. judged by this opportunity, and all judgment however stern must be tempered by the knowledge that his paper is a direct reflex of the people. The newspaper holds the mirror up to nature, and its columns reflect just what is, not what its editor would wish. He doesn't make the events, he but chronicles them. Gladly would he declare that all was peace and joy and harmony, but if crime and casualty present itself, he must as a "brief chronioler of the times" make record of what is done. TVe hare said that the editor's responsibility is commensurate with his opportunity. His oppor tunity is undoubtedly great. He can reach a vast audienee that the minister cannot, and the influence of what he says is constant. Prob ably it is this great opportunity that has given the impression that the newspaper is more of a philan thropic public enterprise than any thing else. The model newspaper has not! yet appeared. When it does, its editor will be cautious and bold; gentle and terrible; audacious and careful; will know all and tell all; will live in a glass house, and be clothed in a robe of righteousness; will be the palladium of liberty and the conservator of public right; will scorn advertisements and fix his eyes upon the moun tains; will ignore the common de mands of the fleshly tabernacle in which his lofty spirit finds temporary habitation, and ignoring all the blandishments of the worldly-minded and carnal of heart, will be about as near perfection as is given to poor numaniiy 10 ap proach. Unfortunately, with journalists as with ministers, life is so short that the end of all things is usually reached before this degree of perfection is attained and we are hurried to the land of shadow. The journalist, criticised by his fellow-teacher in the pulpit, sometimes thinks that perhaps his is not the only professional field in which unwarantcd liberties are ta ken and inexcusable customs given the countenance of tacit sanction. A minister can be orth odox or heterodox yet by personal gifts of eloquence be upheld by admirers who do not pause to see where his doctrines may lead; a lawyer can to-da3' prove that his client was innocent, and to morrow get a verdict of ''guilt' as charged" against a man no more guilty; a doctor can cover up all evidence of his in competence with the green sod that marks the last resting place of his sometime patient, and still practice medicine; yet tho facts and thoy are not isolated ones, should not weigh against the divine who preaches the word of the Master and practices it; the keen, earnest lawyer who tears sophistry aside and reveals the truth; or the patient, self-sacrificing physician who by great effort and marvelous skill saves his patient's life. In discriminate blame of the news paper of the day argues an ina bility to perceive that the news paper is primarily a private enter prise; it is started and maintained to make money for the man that owns it. As a general thing if it doesn't make money for its pro prietors, it is weak, flabby and no account. No matter wlat may be said, no matter what other motive may be assigned,that can be safely set down as the real business. We believe that editors possess this in common with ministers. Mr. Marvin makes his living (we pre sume) by preaching; the proprie tors of a daily paper by writing and printing what Mr. Marvin and others say and do. And as Mr. Marvin doubtless has a high idea of -what life should be, its ends and aims, and so on, so can and should the editor. But primarily he looks to his paper for his bread and butter. Of course he is re sponsible to the public. Ho has the same measure of responsibili ty, tkat every other member of so ciety hasthe full responsibility There exists high up among the Carpathian Mountains of Galicia, in a district known as Tatras, one of the most primitive and unso phisticated communities in Eu rope. The population of this re mote region numbers several hun dred thousand individuals. They neither use stronr drink nor eat animal food. Riches havo no charm for them. Though poor, they are content, and although their diet is spare and monoto nous, they enjoy perfect health and live long lives. The food of these arcadians is principally oats, either simply boiled or ground and converted into cakes.
