(3) Site fchialij .storxmi- ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY MAY G, 1883 Capt. J. Barbara. Cal. C. White is at Santa Leo's Ideal Pleasure Party will appear at Occidental Hall this even ing. The Columbia arrived in yes terday. The State sails fcr S. F. to day. The Ona and Kate L- Anna went to sea yesterday, both loaded to their fullest capacity. The Washington Territory board of pilot commissioners will meet at II waco next Saturday. There will be a total eclipse of the sun at two o'clock this afternoon not visible to this coast. J. L. York lectures at Liberty Hall this evening on "Evolution, or man and his relations." The Chinese graders near Colum bia Cily are blasting a roadway through the solid cliffs above the Regular monthly meeting of the vestry of Grace church will be held on Monday evening, May 7th, at 7:30 i. .m., in the vestry room. The regular Tillamook packet A. B. Ficldi will leave Main street wharf for Tillamook at six o'clock next Saturday morning, the 12th inst. The Rycvale begins discharging at Flavel'sdock. Of her 1,200 tons, allot the tin plate, 720 tons will be discharged here. The remainder consists of crates, sheet iron and cement. Chas. H. Williams & Co. , are in the real estate business and announce the fact; thoy are located opposito The Astoriax office and are ready for business to-morrow morning. The Seattle Herald is authority for the statement that the citizens of Whatcom learning that a certain indi vidual was going to start a paper in that burg.offered him $500 if he would stay away. The Lombardian is taken at 55s for U. K., or continent and will load flour. It is not probable that the ex periment of shipping flour and salmon in the same vessel will bo repeated this season. The body of an unknown man was picked up in the river yesterday afternoon a short distance below Tonguo Point, and brought to the coroner's for identification. It is be lieved to be the body of Peter George who was drowned at Clifton about a month ago. Ex- Mayor D. C. Ireland, former editor aHd proprietor of Tiie Astoiu ax, and Frank Baltes, his old-time foreman, were among our callers yesterday. Ireland says he is amazed at the growth of the city and is com ing down here among his old friends whenever he can get away. A wrecking force left San Fran cisco last Friday for the scene of the Eureka's disaster. They have a com plete outGt and will either raise the vessel or at least do all that can be done toward saving the cargo. A diver accompanies the party. The Idaho which is due here to-day will bring a supplementary force of ship carpenters. She will take on a large quantity of cannery supplies at this port. Everybody knows who is tho Printer's Dovil, but there are few who know how he came to be so dubbed. Printing used to be called the Black Art, aud the boys who assisted tho pressmen were called the imps. Ac cording to legend, Aldus Manutius, a printer of Venice, took a little negro boy, left behind by a merchant vessel, to assist him in his business. It soon got wind that Aldus was assisted by a little black imp, and to dispel tho ru mour, ho showed the boy to the as sembled crowd, and said, "Be it known to Venice, that I, Aldus Mauutus, printer to the Doge, have this day made a public exposure of tho 'printer's devil.' All who think he is not flesh and blood, may come up and pinch him." Tho people were satis fied, and no longer molested .the negro "lad. Artful Chinese. Since the passage of the anti-Chinese restriction act, says the Port Townsend-4r7us,our Mongolian neigh bors have been more anxious than ever to enjoy tho privilege of nest ling under Uncle Sam's wing. The boundary line between British Colum bia and Washington Territory fur nishes an inviting field for evasion of the law. It seems that large numbers of Chinamen are congregating in and about Port Moody and Kew West minster, from which points their ef forts to sneak across the lino are un ceasing. Wo'are creditably informed tnat tncy nave onerea tne owner ot a certain fishing sloop as high as a hun dred dollars to smuggle them across. A few have undoubtedly secured pas sage in Indian canoes already, as their mysterious appearance upon the American side could not be explained on other grounds unless they dropped from the clouds and Mongolians doa'fc usually arrive by that route. Brick Making. The beginning of a new era in As toriathe building of brick structures makes prominent the matter of manu facturing brick. In several places in this immediate locality firo clay is found. Henry Plato is now burning a kiln of brick on the Wallueki, and at Young's Biver, Fort Clatsop, and other points, excellent day is found. Of brickmaking on this coast, a man ufacturer says: The clay out of which the majority of tho brick havo been made is of a very strong nature; it re quires an admixture ornearly an equal quantity of sand to keep the brick from cracking while in the process of drying. Tho sand, of which there is an unlimited quantity adjacent to the deposits of clay, also has the effects of producing a fine blood red color to the brick when burned. When the sand reaches a certain heat, J in tho process of burning, it melts aud fuses with the clay, re sulting in a brick of most extraordinary strength. Their tenacity is an im portant factor in reducing tho price, as the brickmaker is at comparatively little loss from breakage, while he has the grim sctisfaction of knowing thai when once burned they will stand like a stone wall. The clay used in brick making all over the Pacific coast is found on the top soil, instead of underneath, as in the east. The sub soil from some geological cause, does not possess body enough for the pur pose. As a result of tlieBe facts the Cno steam power brickmaking ma chinery used in the east cannot be ueed hero; too many roots, etc., in the clay. In the largest as well as the smallest brickyards in California and Oregon the bricks are all moulded by hand. Counting first cost of very expensive machinery, break-downs, etc., they cannot bo manufactured on any cheaper principle than by hand moulding. Yesterday Morning's Fire. At three o'clock yesterday morning tho residence of Eben Parker on Wa ter street near Kinney's cannery was destroyed by fire, the house and con tents being a total los3. Mrs. Parker and her children escaped without in jury, but saved nothing. The origin of the fire is said to havo been a de fective flue. Tho department was on hand as promptly as possible under tho circumstances; the tide was low, and considerable delay was occasioned in getting a stream on tho fire; it was impossible to save the house but for tunately the fire wa3 prevented from spreading to adjoining property. As good luck would have it there was not a breath of wind stirring; wo fear, had there been a slight breeze there would be a different story to tell this morning. There was considerable discussion in reference to tho delay of the Gro companies in cettinjr to the fire. That amounts to just this. Our depart ment is made up of men who work hard all day, and at 3 in the morning they are pretty apt to be sound asleep; they aro always prompt in re sponding to an alarm; we know per sonally of men who got up from beds of sickness yesterday morning aud hurried to the engine houses, and did good work. It seems to us that that fire bell is at present neither useful nor ornamental. The general expres sion yesterday morning was "I didn't hear the alarm." The bell is jammed in tho rear of the city hall and sur rounded by high buildings on threo sides; peoplo that live in the vicinity of the Catholic church may perhapB hear it, (if the' know it a goiug to ling and they have the windows up) but others do not and cannot. It should be raised, aud that at once. Occidental Hall A fair audience at Occidental Hall last evening greeted Leo's Ideal Pleas ure Party. The performers give all they advertise aud in presentable shape. The dancing is good, espec ially the clogg dancing which is the best seen in Astoria for a long time. The Leo Bros, on the trapeze, and afterwards on the stage do a good act. The sketches are irresistibly funny, and, on the whole, they give a pleasant evening's entertainment. There will bo an entire change of pro gramme to-night. Baptist Church. Tho Rev. Dr. Bushnell, of San Jose, Cal., will preach in the Baptist church to-aavat ij. a. m., ana deliver & temperance lecture at 7:30, r. n. subject, "Wrecks."
