The "Washington Improvement
Co. has been organized in Seattle
to cut a canal connecting the wa
ters ol Union and Washington
lakes, supply the city -with water,
use the water power for manufac
turing, and to run steamers on the
lakes. The canal will be only
four hundred yards long and will
lower the water in "Washington
lake six ieet, draining several
thousand acres of valuable lands.
Beginning last Monday the O.
R. & N. Co. began taking: an in
ventory of the entire possessions
of the O. & C. R. R., previous to
taking 'possession of the ninety-nine-year
lease on the 15th. An
agent was sent out on the freight
train Monday last to take- the
number of cars along the road and
a complete inventory has been
made of the "material at the car
shops in this city. Vindicator.
Advices from San Francisco say
that Oregon wool has the call in
the market and is especially de
sirable because of its fineness and
length. A distinction is made be
tween the wool of Willamette val
ley and that from the Umpqua
and Eastern Oregon, the latter
places being superior to the former
becanse more attention has been
paid to the improvements of flocks.
The assessed valuation of Uma
tilla county is $-i,75S,316. It has
G9,G16 acres of improved land, G,
131 cattle, 21G,8SS sheep, 4,04.4
swine, and G,04S horses.
There is a new settlement in
Puyallup valley called Chain of
Lakes, and a post office with that
name has been applied for.
