m gfe SaiXu ateiatu ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY APEIL 10, 1SS3 A Peculiar Suicide. Dr. Martin, who committed sui cide in Candelaria recently, did so in a remarkable manner. It is said he, with a number of others were enjoTing themselves in a "bibulous" way at Jones' saloon; in the midst of their drunken songs he suddenly grew grave and posi tively sober. He drew the crowd around him and told them how ho had fought againsthis unquencha ble thirst for liquor, but all in vain. He said that he was certain that he could become somebody if he would brace up, but it could not be; "at the hour of one o'clock I will leave this vain and sinful world. But bo3's, as a last favor, allow me to do so by music." The crowd, all of which were his friends, summoned up the Italian players and to tho music of the harp and the violin he took a dose of morphine. Everybody regarded it as a hoax; thought the stuff he took was salts. After awhile he dropped peacefully asleep in a chair. One by one the crowd left the saloon until none were left there except the sleeping Martin and .Tones. Not wishing to arouse him from such a seemingly peace ful sleep, Jones locked up the place and retired for the night. Upon opening the saloon in the morning he was found dead. Tuscarora Mining Ncics.
