The British barks Helen Denny and Easterhill hare arrived out. From the Siuslaw come3 tho'story of the capturo of a thirty foot salmon. A. K. Woodbury ha3 sold the Spokane Falls Chronicle to H. T. Cowley. The Walla Walla city council have placed the liquor license at $500 per yesr. Everyone has a cold. It seems to be endemic, or epidemic, or sporadic, or something else. Archie Clark, who vas shot in Portland by Chas. Anderson March 29th died last Saturday. A $6,000 fire at Walla Walla last Saturday, burned a portion of a block of buildings on Third street. The wind storm of Sunday passed off with little harmful results and yes terday the rain fell heavily through out a part of the day. At Snohomish wages in the woods now range from $40 to $110 per month; greasers receiving the former and teamsters tho latter. Bids for building the new school home will bo received until two o'clock this afternoon, at the office of J. O. Bozorih, school clork. The corner stone of the Odd Fel lows' Orphan Home will be laid dur ing the next session of the Grand Lodgo probably ilay 18th. Henry Villa rd and party will ar rive here to-morrow. There wasn't much fuss made over him in '81, nor do we think there will be in '83. The funeral of the late Mrs. Elis abeth "Vaughn will take place at two o'clock this afternoon. The services will bo conducted at the Baptist church. Seattle is going into the sawmill business extensively. The western mill company is the latest organization of the kind, being the fourth since January 1st. Among the returning passengers on tho last steamer was M. D. Kant. He left his wife in Southern Califor nia, where it is thought the climate will imnrovo her health. Addenda. (The followiug as written as a part of an article that appeared in Sun day's Astoriax, entitled "Our Steam ers," but was by mistake cut off in making up:) The remainder of Astoria's steamer fleet represent resident enterprise. The bar tugs which so often and so long havo "gone down to the sea with ships" have a stormy and honorable record. The Aitoria, Columbia and Brcnliam, the property of Capt. Geo. Flavel, have towed many a gallant vessel across Columbia bar, and in storm and sunshine have battled with the breakers and discharged the trust reposed in them. Of late the pilot schooner J. C. Cousins, owned here, and still later the Pioneer, owned in Portland, have shared the danger and the glory. Tho Clara Parher is also an example of what an Astoria boat can do. Built by H. B. Parker, her enterprising owner, to ply th waters of the Colurabia,she has been a source of credit and profit to him since the day she was launchod and is always bnsy, as indeed are all the steam crafts that make headquarters at this port. Situated as w e are, almost on an island, our navigation facilities consti tute a matter of considerable import ance to us in our lacustrine site, and doubtless, as our little city grow3 the steamer traffic will increase, until the number of vessels that tie up at our wharves will equal that of any coast city of the Union. Ruddock & Levake have built a neat shop on the roadway nearly aop posite the O. R. & N. dock, and are fully prepared to do all manner of plumbing, gas and steam fitting. If one of our fast flyers could bo given the Astoria mail from Portland tho business would bo complete, and we of Astoria would be well served with mail and traveling facilities 0 all kinds. A Splendid Memory. On tho State of California last Sun day morning came to Astoria tho usual number of stalwart men whose busi ness and pleasure it will be the ensu ing season to arrest the salmon as they seek the far off spawning grounds of the upper Columbia, and send them out over the sea to Liverpool. Among them was one with a memory. Stepping up to Clark Laughery, who was standing near tho gangway, he said, "are you the chief of policet" 'Yes." 'Woll, I want to go to jail." Clark rapidly- turned back the pages of memory,but found no remembrance of any such cise as this before. "What for?" ho asked. "I was arrested here about threo years ago, and tho policeman didn't get all 1 carried and I want to o to jail." He was accommodated. Upon getting into the large outside cell ho turned to one of tho two inmates who were re garding him with eager curiosity and borrowed a knife, with which ho began scratching and scraping at the winJow jamb. His search was re warded by the production of a ten dollar gold piece, which came tinkling out and fell on the floor. "You don't pay any interest in this "bank, do you?" he asked. "No," said Clark. "Well, I hav a splendid memory. Won't you come and have something?" The Department Commander Geo East. Ever siuco President Arthur's action last February in "restoring to the public domain" a portion of -the reser vation granted to Chief Moses and his tiibe in the big bend of the Colum bia, tho Indians in that section have complained of the intrusion of whites who "had filed claims in various locali ties. Last week tho old chief went to "Vancouver to see about it. He has always been friendly, and during tho Xez Perce, war aided tho government. Tho re sult is that Gen. Miles was an out go ing passenger on the Oregon which left here yesterday. He thinks that by a nominal payment by the govern ment the Indians can be appeased. The Welcome hears that a flock of about 30 Japanese sparrows are pay ing Forest Grove frequent visits. These birds were brought to this coun try by Walter Afoffettjsnd were turned loose at Astoria. The barkentino Portland is at North Bend undergoing repairs. She was built by Simpson Bros, about ten ysars since in the shipyard at North Bend, and this is the first time she has ever received a general overhaul ing. The State arrived in Sunday morning after an unusually rough trip. In crossing the bar tho sea swept the vessel from stem to stern, but no damage wa3 done. The Ore gon left out yesterday afternoon. The Columbia is due to-morrow. A San Francisco dispatch of the 18th, says: The first Columbia river Ezlmon of tho season has been placed on tho market by William Hume. Thi3 is four days earlier than last year. Remember the ladies sociable and ice cream festival this evening at Lib erty Hall. Besides the goo-l things to be disposed of, visitors will enjoy a literary and musical entertainment volunteered for the occasion. It is particularly requested that the pret tiest lady and the handsomest gentle man in Astoria will not fail to attend. Particulars will be explained at the festival. Tho Wide West and the Fleet wood the two fastest passenger boats in the northwest, will bring down a great number of seaside tourists this season. A few little conveniences would cause tho seaside travel to make thii place headquarters: it would be a matter of considerable value to overyone, col lecfively. The Skipanon road is prominent among these f. 1. c'a. To a novice in electrical nomen clature the terms used in describing matters are mystifying. A circular in reference to electric lights received for consideration speaks of the coulomb, watt, ohm, ampere, volt and vomb. Then come the megvomb and erg. So we suppose that one-half an ohm divided by a three-quarter tension watt would ampere a volt to the den sity of an erg, the coulomb of the neg vomb would be so; otherwise thus. Dr. R. Between the West Coast and Occident Packing company's buildings eleven piles were washed from under the Toadway, making transit at that point & dubious undertaking. The coaches transfer passengers, but some of the express wagons pass over. Villard while m San Francisco was visited by an Oregonian reporter to whose questions the private secre tary made answer at length, but gave no information further than what was already known. He knew nothing about shipping freight from Oregon over the Oregon Short Line, could not tell anything about tho effect on Portland of tho completion of tho branch to ICalama, and speaking in relation to tho extension of the line to Astoria he said he could not enter into a discussion on that subject. A S. F. special says local agents of the canneries on the Columbia and Sacramento rivers regard the catch of salmon to date as somewhat light for this time of tho year, though they are not prepared to venture an opin ion as to tho probable outlook of tho season. Speaking in regard to the average price of fish, they aeem to be lieve that that paid by the canneries is unusually high, raw fish bringing a dollar apiece on the Columbia, and 50 cents on the Sacramento river, against 70 cents for the former and u cents ir tno latter, paid a year ago Some of the dealers account for the discrepancy in these figures by an increased competition, and by the efforts to push trade, while others re gard it as the legitimate outcome of an actually small supply of fish.
