m BBStiseiEaaaEBBSBH Efre gaits gvst0uiutu ASTORIA, OREGON SUNDAY . APRIL S, 1SE3 The Burning or Judas. It is the custom, says the Bulr leUti) iu some countries during "Holy "Week" to burn Judas in effigy. This custom is observed with great emphasis iu Mexico and in many of the Latin com munities of Central and South America. Judas was a traitor. He betrayed his master with a kiss: received money for his treachery. But, after all, he had the manli ness to go and hang himself. This final act ought to be set down in his favor. Ho was of no further use in the world, and got out of it as quickly and cheaply as possi ble. Had he lived all men would have despised him. "When eight een hundred years afterwards, people demonstrate their horror and disgust of this particular act of treachery, the performance might be improved a little to sig nify utter loathing and disgust of all who betray their masters. For whoever is unfaithful to the trust which has been reposed in him has not only betrayed earthly masters, but he has betrayed the Divine Master. He enjoined perfect hon esty, sincerity, truth, faithfulness. No one can be true to his trust who does not observe these obli gations. Whoever fails willfully, would, under the same circumstances, have betraj'ed the Master, as Ju das betrayed Him. The descend ants of Judas are many. The line will never run out. The individ ual who in a fiduciary capacit' takes money which does not be long to him is the modern Judas. He betrays the Master. The man who falsifies accounts is another. He who deceives his friends is untrue to them, who sacrifices them for some immedi ate interest, is the legitimate de scendant of Juda. He not only ought to be bur:Hii in effigy as a traitor, but he cannot do a better thing for society than to follow the example of his progenitor and go out and hang himself. All the embezzlers, swindlers, cheats men who are one thing to day and another to-morrow; whocmnot be trusted in business or friend-hip; who would betray the best friend under heaven, and the Divine Master himself if oppoitunity oc curred, should be included in the same expression of horror as is ex pressed in this typical 'burning of Judas. If only the custom should come to have this broader meaning1, it might be well to observe it with great emphasis once a year. Let Judas be burned without fail. But do not shut out the fact that Judas means as well as every double faced individual, every one who betrays aVubt of whatever nature. For aught that can be said to the contrary, Judas stands as well in the estimation of Christ as anyone of that treacherous, deceitful and lying crew who have betrayed Him many times by betraying earthly tiusts. For he said with reference to the gift of a cup of cold water: "Inasmuch as ye did it unto the least of these, ye did it unto me." Inasmuch, therefor, as a betrayal of trust was committed against the least of individuals, it was a be trayal of Him. There ought to be this broader significance of the burning of Judas. It may be im possible to burn out all the em bezzlers, cheats, scoundrels, knaves and those who in confidential re lations betray the most sacred trusts. But it would be quite in order to have a t3rpical burning once a year, with strong induce ments for all that class to go out and hang themselves, because society has no further use for them. Judas survives in a ver' numerous progeny. It may be hard to rid the world of them. But the world should finally come to hold them in the same estima tion as a considerable part of it now holds the memory of Judas, his descendants would do far less harm in the world than they are doing now. Let the fire kindled for Judas be hot enough to make it uncomfortable for his descend ants. The three Georgia pine trees under which Jeff Davis surrender ed nearly eighteen years ago were recently struck by lightning and shivered to splinters. Poor dear Arthur, our over worked president, is seeking re laxation amid the orange groves of Florada. "We notice in a few of our ex changes where much virtuous in dignation is wasted on the Oregon air because Vanderbilt gave a grand ball in new York -where all was gas, glass, glare and dazzle, and the lack of intellect was made up by a super-abundance of bul lion. There is really no reason to get red in the face recounting the wrongs of the poor, because rich people spend a little money. They help the poor in so doing. There were 1,000 guests at that ball. Each g;uest spent at least $250 in fixing up. Here is S250,000 spent among sewing girls of New York who are so much better off because of the Vanderbilt's welcome extravagance. A new invention reported from Turin consists in the application of light giving materials to printing ink by which print becomes lu minous in the dark, so that in the future it will be possible to lead your newspaper at night without the assistance of a candle, pine knot, gas light, lamp or other customary expedient. It may be well to likewise observe that The "Weekly Astorian, the best local newspaper in the Northwest is furnished for two dollars per an num, in advance, postage prepaid, A London dispatch says: In terest in the nitro-glycerine dis coveries continues to grow, and the excitement is intense. The papers are making the most of their opportunity and arc selling frequent editions, with headings "A plot to blow up London." Tke contents editorial and local news seek to connect the four dynamite prisoners with the ad vice given by O'Donovan Rossa to Irishmen, to burn everything English except their coal. DIED.
