W gfe gitilij sixrcfcm. ASTORIA, OREGON: THUSDAY MARCH 29, 1883 Something for Nothing. All newspaper publishers have had experience with men who want to advertise themselves or their business in newspapers -with out cost to themselves. It is pitiable to see the shabby means they take to attain the end they have in view. Men, who would feel insulted were they called dead beats, will with bland effrontery ask the publisher to "please men tion so and so" (an advertisement) or, handing in what is really an advertisement under the guise of a communication, they will say, "Here's a little item that will help you to fill up with." Men who do this and there are some in every town call themselves honorable and would not think of asicinjr a real estate owner to let them use one of his houses a few months for nothing, nor would they ask him to let them culti vate and use a part of his farm, without expecting to have to pay for it. The advertising columns of his paper is to the publisher what the house or farm is to the real estate owner his source of income. Who any one should expect the news paper publisher to . be more generous in squandering his sub stance than other business men is something that cannot be ac counted for, except on the suppo sition that some people have an idiotic idea that printers set up type for the love of the work, and that ink and type and printing presses are gifts from heaven to sinful men, who publish news papers merely for the purpose of smoothing the pathwaj- cf their fellow men on the rugged road to fortune, and who hope not for re ward this side of the grave.
